  • It's Week 1 on my 3 acre property, and the first order of business is locating the abandoned well that hasn't been used in about 20 years.
    Thank you so much for the continued support, and the kind messages/comments on my last video. I'm so excited for this adventure of a lifetime and all the projects and challenges that are in store for me!

    Meg, If the well head is capped it may also be buried, in which case mowing the property won't necessarily help you find it either. It may have been capped with a metal cap or the pipe itself might be metal so a metal detector might help you find it. As for the International, it may need grease in the ports and the hydraulic fluids topped off. It should be able to get itself out under it's own power in most situations. Duallies for the back is probably the best solution but costly. You might look at lowering the axel and putting a larger set wheels and tires on, it might be cheaper and be about 60% as effective. As for the mowing, If you you ran the brush cutter in a single, horizontal pass as you move forward, just getting the tall stuff down a bit, while Mike mowed with the John Deer behind you, it should be easier for you and the Deer shouldn't get stuck as much. Once you've mowed the grass down the ground should start drying out more which should help support the International more, and then you can really get things started. Sending you good thought from Northern California where it's already been 40° more than once this June. Also it's nice to see that you do, in fact, own other clothes 🤣Still love the hat! 😀👍

      How about using that pole in 8' foot lengths to span that muddy area.

    • @scottperry8388
      @scottperry8388 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@robertdoane5875 The problem they're having is the Peet Mud. It's like a bog or marsh made up of decayed vegetation and soil. Adding the 8' wood poles could help in the short term but they would then sink under the weight of the backhoe adding to the decay. What they did was the better solution when they added the sand and rock from the driveway area. but that could end up being more like a concrete patch in areas they may not want it later. Land management is a tricky thing, I don't envy them their task, but their young and remorseful, they'll figure it out.

    • @Meg.August
      @Meg.August  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @scottperry8388 We came to the same conclusion about the well - it may be underground and not visible even if we do mow the entire property 😬 Metal detector is also something we could use. You're right about the International - it should be able to get itself out but there's something messed up in the hydraulics of that boom arm which is highly unfortunate lol! We're making lots of good progress on the mowing and man is it ever nice to start seeing this land looking more like a property than a jungle! and lol!! Yes, I do have many fits - i'd burn to a crisp wearing a tank top all day out here 😆 gotta be sun smart haha! See ya next time!

    The john deere 322 is a workhorse, I have a JD 44 front end loader on mine. Something that helps them alot is to put 18" tires on the front, and 26" tires on the back, instead of the 16" fronts and 23" rears. Also loading the rear tires with water or windshield washer fluid makes it heavier for better traction.

    Lift the outriggers when pushing forward with the bucket, you’re effectively pushing against an anchor with them down. Get rid of that backhoe, get a 4wd tractor with a bush hog

    This may help u and may not. When dragging ur backhoe with the rear bucket leave front bucket 6 inches above ground and use full throttle on the machine. With sound filter couldn’t tell if u had done that. Also sometimes it’s best o put outriggers 4-6 inches above ground and use rear bucket to lift then go left or right instead of forward or backwards. I’m a former operator and just using the machine is the only way to learn. Great video and the both of you are doing a fantastic job.

    Meg and Mike,
    When trying to push the loader forward, you need the boom and stick at about 60 degrees, this provides better mechanical advantage through about 120 degrees. Put bucket in full dump position, sink teeth in and coordinate boom and stick functions in alternating short increments.

    Good to see you’re protecting yourselves from the sun - broad brimmed hats and long sleeves for the win!
    Sometimes, in the early stages of projects, it can feel like a bit of a spiral - but you’ll get traction (har har) and soon be feeling like the progress is more real.
    When I lived in WA I had a Yanmar that we fitted duals to so we could run a brush cutter over some soft ground - real parallels to your project. Mine were extreme offset rims that bolted together on the original hub, one dished in and the other dished out. I’ve seen other setups where there are turnbuckle clamps that hold a centerless rim to the existing wheel somehow. Good luck with whatever you pursue there!

    Happy Saturday everyone. As per usual Meg takes on a challenge with an abundance of enthusiasm and energy. This one absolutely qualifies as the needle in the haystack. I hate it that the water line from the trailer didn't provide any clues but if there's a well out there you're going to find it.
    This won't be the first shortfall in this project and from time to time you will feel a little defeated but it's during those times I want you to take a step back, take a breath and reflect on all of the accomplishments that brought you here. I have nothing but confidence in you and it's these difficult times that will make you appreciate the wins even more.

    Great work, I use to live in a very mountainous region here in Colombia, where the grass grows tall and thick like the one in your property. I may suggest using a harness for the weed wacker, a protective apron and a face shield. Also, many people that worked out in the field use to carry a machete on their hips for those times when you encounter thick grass and the weed wacker can't get the job done you just whip out the machete and start to cut until you can resume the job with the weed wacker.

    Looks like a second Stihl weed wacker/string trimmer would be the fastest way forward. And then maybe a metal detector? I've had success in the past with cutting grid lines into a large patch of land like that (walkways like nyc city streets), and then cutting the individual blocks. Trying to cut a large patch at once seems insurmountable, but cutting small pieces at a time seems to aid in conquering the psychological aspect of the project. Good luck!

    awesome to see your project. Did you find your well yet? Couple pointers I use when hunting down a well or septic system. Remember the well rigger didn't quote the job to include a tow. He wouldn't have taken his rig far off the main road unless there was at least a gravel path in. Id look first near the road ( within that first 30 or 40 feet). If he gets stuck there its not too expensive to get pulled out cause he can pull it out with one of his other trucks. look for a culvert across the low area near the road that doesn't makes sense to be there. often they will add a culvert and fill ditch to get closer to final resting place for the house. In short - imagine you drove a 50 foot long truck from town to that property. more likely he pulled past the location and backed in than went on up and turned around. Look for a spot he could do this and also get turned to go back into town and you have your most likely spot.

    Hi Meg and Mike. First of all, you guys must really consider yourselves lucky to live in such a beautiful environment. Those cloud formations at the beginning of the video look so stunning. They are also known as lenticular clouds. But anyway, that’s not what this video is about. You can now use the old corrugated sheets to cover the most swampy areas, along with the construction debris from the previous house. I was wondering if it is not possible to rent a farm vehicle to mow the entire terrain at once instead of using the small “Deere”? These poor vehicles are way too small to do this kind of job. Some bigger machinery are needed to come to the rescue. Anyway, Good luck you guys and I’m looking forward to the next one. 😊

    • @Meg.August
      @Meg.August  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Roy! It is absolutely beautiful here, we are so happy with the spot. We are definitely on a smaller budget which is why we opted to buy older units we could use daily vs renting. Because we're in such a small rural area, renting equipment is very expensive and difficult to come by, even if only for a few days. We're definitely working the Deer hard right now, but we'll give her a good retirement of mowing short grass once we're done plowing down this jungle lol!

    If you plan on towing the Backhoe with the truck again, pleas dont hook a rope to the towball. Thats how people get killed when janking on those things and something lets go. Get a propper rope or strap and hook to a solid point on the frame or get a hitch adapter for recoverys.

    Barrow, rent or buy a regular tractor with a brush hog. Nothing you have used is going to get anything done. You could even pay someone to brush hog your property. You could also use a metal detector to find the well even if it’s plastic cased you should be able to pick up the wires to the pump.

    Have the backhoe at full Throttle makes a difference. The looks to be close to marsh so what you want to do is wait for the ground to freeze over a bit then you can drive on it with no problem an not worry about sinking down once you start clearing you can grade the frozen ground to drain water. Then when it gets warm aging you will have a happy dry land lol

  • @podexperfectussum
    @podexperfectussum 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    backhoes are all-purpose machines, they're not really bad, but they're not really good. even if you put duals on you're probably going to still sink. You need a tracked machine for the soft ground. John Deere MC, 40C, 420C or 430C are 20-30 HP, are decent in the swamps and should have a power take off for a pull-behind mower. Especially rare is the Oliver OC-6 which was designed to farm celery swamps. it'll have twice the HP of the Johnny poppers and it drives, steers, runs, and "floats" better.

    Great start for the project :) Sure it takes some effort, but nothing worthwhile is easy.
    I guess it's worth trying first cutting +-100 meters from the gps coordinates, hopefully the well is in that area. It may even be hidden under some 20 years pile of soil. I have no experience about drilled wells, so not sure if metal detector could help finding it?

    • @Meg.August
      @Meg.August  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! And thanks for the suggestions, yes, one thing that definitely crossed my mind is that it might be buried under the soil being that it's been so many years since it was operational. Mowing is underway so keeping fingers crossed we find it!

    You guys are doing the best you can with what you have BUT maybe you should check to see what you can find for a company who has a Forestry mulcher! They will come in with a skid steer on tracks and chew up everything! They will be able to find the well… IF it’s out there!! It is a possibility that it went bad and someone “Dead Headed” it and they cut it off under ground. It is a potential possibility to run duels on the back hoe but I’ve done Excavating for over 30 years and I have never known anyone to run them! One thing I noticed about when you are using the hoe to pull yourself back… is you need to use the stick and boom at the same time. Pull in on the stick and lift up on the boom at the same time. If you go back and watch your video you will see when he is pulling in on the stick the rear of the hoe starts to lift off the ground and then he looses traction. You might try to watch a couple videos that are they use backhoes and watch what they do when they get stuck. Even if they are using a mini excavator. Just to get a couple pointers. If you watch Captain kleamins TH-cam videos he has a two wheel drive backhoe

  • @darkfactory8082
    @darkfactory8082 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey, Meg, this shit just got serious... 😅 Just to say.. No offense, but in your case, the best option would be a vertical mulcher or a bush hog. Even the tractor is not meant to cut such rough stuff.. Or maybe you can try cleaning with the backhoe's loader bucket.. Damn, that's not a lawn, that's already a mini forest!!🙄 So, as the tractor mower doesn't work and the backhoe sinks, I see your situation a liiiitle bit desperate..The ideal solution would be renting a tracked skid steer with a bush hog.
    Some of the old backhoes had a hydrodynamic drive with automatic brakes, if I remember correctly, so no gears, just push gas and go.. Also, as it seems, your property is pretty flat and muddy, so I recommend you a very careful detailed plan on water and drainage management. It's worth money to make it work so in the future will spare you headaches and damage on buildings.. Damn, the terrain looks like a wet sponge.. like russian tundra, where tractors sunk in the mud a couple of meters below..
    Although not really satisfactory for you, it is a start and there is always somewhere to begin, if you want to do it.. Cheers, keep on and take care. 😉👍
