I have a G7 and a Gh4. When I bought the GH4 lots of folks talked about the cinema like video you could get and showed clips of it…..but that was 8 years ago. Thanks for the interesting video on the newer GH series camera! Cheers !!
I took about 7000 slides over 30 years until 2000 when I switched to digital photography. They all have "film look". I digitized most of them, they still have a nostalgic "film look"! For me, film look is not a big deal. I can produce it in post production, but I never did it. I have both versions of the 20mm f/1.7 (the silver one, and the black one). They both produce excellent sharp pictures, sometimes too sharp for portraits. My old Minolta lenses are much softer, expecially in the corner, with all types of aberrations. Some of the Minolta lenses were produced for Leica. Even cameras were very similar. But Leica had much higher quality standards in the final inspection.
This is awesome!! I’m a total “lens-sensor” film look settings geek, but I’ve never been able to find a channel on TH-cam that has been exploring this…I’ve been working for the last couple of years on a database of all my (super-low-budget LUMIX) SOOC film look settings with the occasional LUT added (when camera settings are not enough to do the job). There are so many interesting things to note here:
1. I find that what really matters is the lens-sensor relationship (meaning how each lens pairs with each sensor’s strengths and weaknesses).
2. I’m finding I can increase what I call the PERCEPTIVE dynamic range by using custom camera settings for each lens-sensor combination.
3. So, because each lens sends light to the sensor differently, custom settings (the picture profiles) and/or LUTs need to be made specifically for that combination…

Perfect topic Grant, you're right on about the 20mm 1.7 Lumix. I've got the original silver one and it's my favorite m43 shooter. My copy is very sharp but it renders tones flatter and with less micro-contrast than the Lumix Leica lenses and that may help with the film look, plus the 40mm full-frame equivalent also captures the perspective of old photo journalism photos.
I got one of those old Mitakon Nikon AIS to M43 Focal Reducer (Speed boosters) I used to use on the old GH1/GH3/BM Cinema Cameras and with the old Nikon AIS lenses really had film-like cinema look and converts full-frame lenses to M43. The Focal reducers are a bit soft for still images but if you want old film softness and tone of the old film lenses might be worth a try, they are not too expensive
Another oddball but very fun creative stills lens with a retro film look is the Fujinon 9mm f/1.4 C-Mount High-Res Industrial lens. I used to use on the original BM Super 16mm Pocket Cinema camera, and on the GX8 the image circle just touches the edges of the frame, I've cropped out 1:1 Instagram, 4:3, 3:2 or whatever for 10 to 14mp images. The model is 'HF9HA-1B' I think I paid about $9 plus $7 for a C-mount to M43 adapter.
Also Grant, Film-like video is fun, and on the GX8 the little Fuji almost fills the cropped 4k video frame, and I've used it to re-create convincing looking Super-16 and Super-8 videos. I produced a few Super-8 style wedding clips for a friend who used to Incorporate them into his wedding videography and the his clients loved it the retro vignettes.

Btw, I just found an old post on MU-43 with stills samples for an idea of how old lenses look with the speedbooster - 'MU-43 Mitakon Lens Turbo (new version) Nikon AIS to M43 Focal Reducer (speedbooster)' if anyone is interested. I forgot how film-like they look out of the camera. Might be a nice look on early Olympus Pen and Panasonic cameras with clean sensor noise.
Also, with a camera that shoots variable frame rate you could shoot 18fps for Super-8 look.
I've got the Voigtlander 17.5mm f0.95 and it has an old fashioned aesthetic to it especially wide open, it's creamy and beautiful and you have to take your time to use it as it's manual.

how's the handheld stabe for video btw? not a big fan of gimbals so i'm currently on the lookout for cameras with good stabe (i know Pannyboi is known for great IBIS, but not sure about their older GX8/85/9)
I have the original 20mm F1.7 in my collection. That and the 14mm F2.5 pancake are the ones always on my take out cameras.
I know it's dated and the AF is bad compared to newer lenses but I'm not really in a hurry and it's just for hobbies.

The Olympus 17mm f2.8 and the Sigma 30mm f2.8 Art lenses both gave me a "film like" look. I shot the 17mm on the E-M5 mark II and the 30mm on the E-M10 mark II. Absolutely loved those fun little combos

One part - low HF at MTF. lower than usual macro contrast, some flare and so on. This is a good thing to have sometimes, yeap. That's why i love old-school lenses some chinese manufacturers make. And old lenses from '60-'70s.
More life-like picture, not like that 4k uber-sharp super contrasty mess i cannot even imagine looking at - having a nausea watching "demo videos" on TVs in a shop.
We don't need all that "extra" info in a picture - our perception "oversaturates" by this and - became bored.
Cinematographers are often trying to get rid of there super-extra details by using old-style lenses too, and filters, and so on (including creative lights and set designer's work).
I'm sure Lumix will build new small cameras with a better sensor and overall specs. I don't know if they will use the G9 sensor (may be with PDAF), The G9-II sensor or something new like a simplified version of the G9-II sensor but they will put something in that range that into a small camera. Flagship cameras only is not sustainable.
For me the best Film like lens is the 12mm/1.4. Not necessarily for the looks but for the vibes. I used Nikon cameras in the analog age and until the GF1 came out. I still like going into A-mode and use the aperture ring.
Try popping the 20mm f1,7 on an old Olympus M4/3 camera like the Olympus Pen E-PL1. I love the results I get out of my kit like that, and I do enjoy the sound of the E-PL1 shutter. It's very satisfying and definitely hits the mark, when I need a bit of shutter therapy to relax.
Been considering the Olympus 17mm f2.8 because it would let me get closer to focal length of the compact film camera from my youth.
Have you ever tried the Voigtländer 25 mm 0.95 wide open? The photos are not razor-sharp and have a glow. And manual focussing is fun anyway
In my opinion, m43 gives a "film like look" in general, because the quality and real resolution(not the amount of pixel, the lines ppm resolution) of an image is worse compared to full frame and with that it is in line with a film camera.
Analog film has about the real world resolution of 12mpix digital cameras. Old digital FF cameras with 12mpix had crappy sensor and couldn't really capture light, shadows and color in a natural way.
With m43 you get very good modern sensors with great color and tonality and lower real world resolution and noise. And because of the lens designs and the ratio of sensor resolution to image circle size, all sorts of lens "trade-offs" like vignetting, coma, blooming etc. get emphasized, which makes it close to old film lenses minus the lower contrast and flaring(because of modern lens coating).
This may sound weird, but it's the advantage of m43 + the pockatability that you have with old film cameras, so you can actually take your camera with you.
The only thing that is missing from m43 and that's for all digital cameras except the Sigma stacked sensor is smooth bokeh. Old analog color film, had the chemicals stacked on top of each other and the lenses where corrected in a way, that the different wavelengths hit the chemicals just perfect. That's why you don't see chromatic abberations in high end film lenses on analog film, but you see it when you adapt the lenses to digital cameras.
Smooth bokeh is an effect created by separating these wavelengths again. So in digital you either have CAs, lateral abberations, etc. With smooth bokeh, or a perfect lens with harsh bokeh.
This is really, the only downside, ignoring Sigma sensors, because the cameras are unusable

I have both the Mk-1 and Mk-II versions and can't tell much difference.
I have the MkII, I reckon it's pretty sharp on the GX9. If the 15mm Leica is sharper, which it should be. I'd like to get a hold of one!!
fk it i'm gonna try out M43. i've used from medium format film all the way to 1" digital but never M43 lol.
Neat video. What post processing software do you use? I had this lens but sold it because it was too similar to my Zuiko 17mm F1.8. Kept the Zuiko for the video functionality. I did like the form factor of the 20mm F1.7 I admit. Image quality, color, saturation, bokeh were great but the way it took post processing wasn’t working for me. Maybe it does have that film vibe but I didn’t reach for it often enough in relation to other tools in my arsenal. I do appreciate this content, however. Big up my man!

i think we could be overstating how much a lens gives a film like look vs the camera and your excellent color edting ;) That said, the 20mm is a fastastic lens. My second favorite of my limited set. You've got the mark ii, i have the mark i. I liked the colors on the samples better on mark i, personal choice, but the AF is faster on the mark i. I wouldn't say people should care too much which they have, unless they need to take action photos of their kids.
Nice video, most Leica, Lumix and Olympus lenses renders beautifully. For "old school" cinematic rendering I would pick the Leica 25/1,4 or the manual Pergear 25/1,8.
Always loved this lens , mk 1 and mk2 , i agree completely , it has a great look , and as we all know its not good for video auto focus , but but but , check how good it is now on this chaps G9 MK 2 th-cam.com/video/uewmgThmmAY/w-d-xo.html , I AM STILL ON THE G9 MK 1 , and still very happy with it , and it still focuses very well in video with the 12 to 60 mm 2.8 TO F4 JOBY , and great on sigma 16mm as the sigma are not affected by the DFD pulse th-cam.com/video/WtrbSYxgQP0/w-d-xo.html and cheers for all your inspiring cheerful videos Grant . 👍🤠

Content for the sake of algorithms. Have you ever shot film? Without preset witchcraft, there is no resemblance to film.
