Flares, Smoke & Dyes : How to Use and Comparison: Boat Safety

- Join us as we discuss the assortment of boating safety visual distress flares, smoke and dyes. We explain their different uses and how to use them, and Capt Tom Kehlenbach owner of Seatow Central Connecticut gives us real live demonstrations with Orion Safety Products. We take the drone to the air to give an emergency aircraft's point of view. We compare the smoke device in parallel to the green dye from a "birds eye" perspective in Long Island Sound.
We have the Old Saybrook Police department supporting the event as well. There are pistol launcher from 12gauge to 25 mm , parachute flares, orange smoke floating flares , green dyes, and handheld flares. The Solas handheld flare is compared to a typical USCG compliant handheld flare. Next episode will include the deployment of a valize style inflatable raft and discuss EPIRBS, and VHF radio procedures.

Still the BEST educational video out there, and it is now 2023! Great job!
wow...thx
Not a boat guy, but your vid is so instructive. Thought at first to look at it rapidly just for the solas flare, but this was so educative, couldn't stop my self from listening the entire vid. Very, very good job, thanks alot!
patrick schwartz thanks for the great feedback man.
Awesome support from all involved.........and great information. Thanks to all involved.
Kondrites thanks for feedback
This was incredibly informative! Thanks for the video!
thank you. glad you liked it.
He giving you that flare gun as a parting gift. What a nice man.
it was sweet man!
Well done guys! I learned a lot.
Thank you Christen.
I love your informative videos. Thank you.
Justice Hussein thank you sir
Great video, so many people have flares etc but have never opened package to familiarize them self with it, waiting until you need one is too late. I was watching him hold that hand held at a upward angle, that’s a really bad idea and he found out quick. Make sure they hold them level so they don’t get burned as stuff falls. Also mention that they have expiration dates on all of them. You will get a ticket if you do not rotate them out as needed. (Good time to try them out safely) also it is against law in most states to use them in non emergency situations, so test them at private ponds/land, remote rivers. So many people buy them and toss in a dry box and never give it another thought, thank you for bringing attention to this!
Thanks for your insight
Loving the drone shot great idea
63melvyn thanks man
This was informative. Thank you.
appreciate the feedback
This is cool! I’m going to take kayaking lessons this Spring and I’m researching safety equipment. Totally appreciate your video.
thanks for watching....enjoy the Kayaking!
I love learning new things and currently I'm understanding flares sometimes I make a few pages of notes
Great thing to always be learning about safety on the water....good for you
Hey Guy really enjoyed this video for good demonstration. Thank you very much :)
thanks
Inpressive, it is good to visualize how these rescue devices operate. Well Done! 😁👍
Thank you very much!
Very interesting, thanks for the video.
Joseph Whiskey Beale thanks Joe.
Thanks for sharing how to use all the different safety products.
ThomasHardenFishing thx for watching Thomas
Nice work, very educational.
ThomasHardenFishing much appreciated
Very informative thanks.
Lukey Dukey AUS thank you
Solas Flares usually on sale in the Spring or good deals at boat shows
Thats when i got it
Thank you so much for this! Flares in Pairs!
Thanks Man. Tommy knows his stuff
Looks like I need to practice with these. I think the 4th of July and New Years is a good time to play with them at home and not cause any alarm
James Cockerham make sure it is not too dry in the area lol
Adventure Streaming Guys shouldn’t you make sure it isn’t dry In the area? Plus I mean you are out on the water in this video
@@thenameisnex3598 correct...you don't want to start a fire in the woods, etc if it is very dry
Yes a lot of times the flares will burn all the way to the ground. So unless you want it falling on neighbors roof etc use over water
can u please tell me what is the cheapest long lasting hand held flare at least 30 minutes if not more thank you
you should call west marine or local coast guard station for this info please. thank you
An we get a list of all items used in the video?
I got a flare for my kayak visible at day orange smoke
smart!
Orange is the color opposite on blue water, red is more opposite of forest green
good insight
Title: Boat safety
Doesn't wear a life jacket
Kian C it is not a law, thanks for the comment
@@AdventureStreamingGuys I wasnt that serious. Just found it funny. Interesting video nonetheless
@@Karatekidhero thanks for watching us
Lol its still not safe lol lol
The Sea Tow guy is wearing a life jacket.
Thanks
you bet
The kingdom of heaven has come near to you.
3:56 Super Air Drop Incoming
lol...roger that
That comment about doing all the fiddly loading in the boat so you don't throw it overboard accidentally was definitely coming from experience.
You bet 😊
Do the solas flares have a longer expiration time/date? Same question with 25 mm?
Will get bak to you so I give correct data, asking MFG
From Orion- All USCG and SOLAS flares are manufactured with 42 months until expiration. We allow six months for transport and distribution and three years, 36 months, of expected life for the consumer. Since Orion produces flares in Peru Indiana and only produces to order, our flares always have the best dates.
I pity the boat in distress 6000 feet away, and everyone ignores his flares.
those flare guns seem pretty useless compared to the rocket parachute things.
smoke, hand flares, and the rocket ones and you're golden.
it's good to have the combo....flare gun is real easy to use and pretty safe
In rigorous testing, the green dye in the water ends up being easiest to see from the aircraft searching, by the way. It's what the military uses. They use big packs of the stuff that last for half an hour or more and makes a big signal, visible day or night. But anyway, one is none, two is one. Have as many signalling devices as you can.
👍👍👍👍👍
thank you
2:45 good lord absolutely zero trigger or muzzle discipline
But otherwise a great demo video
Bear gryls said that 8 flares will draw a securty preimeter when called for
Call in fire for effect
wher its this staf in boat to S.O.S. WER I FAIND THIS FOR CRASH OR THIS STAFF.TNX
mrx frx not sure i understand the question
@@AdventureStreamingGuys how to find a rocket or signal in trouble on a board that SOS POCKET from experience I ask ? tnx
not sure I understand the question@@mrxfrx6795
@@AdventureStreamingGuys why im from croatia dude
wow man...thanks for checking out the video @@mrxfrx6795 . I just shot the video, I don't have the pyrotechnics .
so he was told to squat down so if he drops something its staying in the boat, and the very next 2 reloads he keeps standing
think the point is to not hold it over the gunnel where you can drop the device overboard....you don't want to necessarily squat since it limits your mobility when squatting, however if seas require you to squat for stability, then you should do so.
Yah free drones and flares for everyone
Lol.
5:17 why?
not sure what you mean? i think his point was not to load the flare in the gun over the side of the boat since you might drop it over board.
If anybody is wondering when to implement a specific safety device, then they need to use common sense. It’s based of visual acuity so it’s important to asses your conditions and be prepared. Not only being prepared but holding your device at “the ready”
great comments...thank you
holding it still nill are going to see it wave it about
you have to be careful of the slag, it will burn you and cause you to drop the flare.
they will think its a boat side light
the brightness of the flare is unmistakable, I have watched flares from 9 miles away through naked eyes and binoculars, it would be hard to mistake for a boat light. If you had gloves on, you might want to try and wave it, but still keep the flare over the water and not over the deck of the boat
18:41 this guy trying to use the dye pack doesn't know what he's doing. You don't need to peel it, you just pull on the bottom section. The lanyard is wrapped around your neck or around your hand it opens up very easily.
Thanks for the feedback
Not called a "choke". It's called an "insert"...
thx
how many ads?!!!!! god every minute ish too many .
dude...sorry not much control there
Who’s here from dark knight rise video 😂
lol Capt W
Half informative, not enough details...I'll keep on looking...
well at least you got 50% out of it....lol
thanks for checking us out
The comment is only 10% useful, what’s the half missing you’re looking for @Jose Peixoto?
@@YourHostNathanBurke The other half? Ok, I don't remember it well, not gonna watch it for another 20 min,but I think it's the BEGINNING that is missing, how to handle it,and how to LIGHT IT UP!!! Which side is UP and which side is DOWN; That is an important part; everybody knows what it is for ,and everybody knows how to HOLD it, AFTER it is lit up; but all i saw is the gentleman holding it,after it was activated; the first step would be helpful, people who already know, don't need the video; the instructions are there, but there is nothing like practice, and watching a good video comes VERY close to that.
BUT i see this all over the net, mostly in all subjects, people sometimes forget to show everything that is needed, maybe they assume that since it is so simple, everybody knows it; at least 50% useful now?
Jose Peixoto I came here knowing nothing about flares. I feel confident to use one now.
Probably would have been a good idea to do some training before doing the video.
Lol
made it realistic this was training for us
For an apparent expert handling the flare he seems more interested in looking cool that taking precautions, this guy is reckless with his ego
thanks for your valuable insight
PLEEAS TELL MY OMG NO FRX
lol
@@AdventureStreamingGuys what is time of solas flare at 25$ ,compared to 4 times for 20$ more chance of being seen, also carry some rockets ie firework type very cheap can be seen much further than pistol flare, easy to buy in uk problem is all this will be happening at night in worst weather
@@gerardcollins1767 good info thanks
Boat safety video: keeps finger inside trigger guard of the flair gun and even points it at the dude in the white shirt. All credibility of this video is lost...
thanks for the valuable and insightful feedback
