  • Welcome to Episode 39 of Carpe Diem Sailing. I'm back on my regular posting schedule and in this episode I go over the navigational aids systems in IALA Region A and B. I also dispel the rule of thumb of "Red Right Returning" which only works in half the world and in very specific situations. Best to always consult a chart. I cover the lateral buoys, day-beacons, bifurcation buoys, cardinal buoys, special buoys and talk about navigational ranges. as usual I will have shownotes on our website. Also FYI I always turn off mid roll ads.

    Finally, someone explained it all correct. I thought it was only me who considered all this ''Red-Right-Return'' completely misleading, and only works partially. ;)

    Well back! One of the clearest examples I’ve seen. Thank you. Read returning makes absolutely no sense in my mind, not only because I sail in the United Kingdom but it’s ‘conditional’. I solo sail 99% of the time so I’m subscribed :)

    I now live in Florida but still keep a boat on the Puget Sound. To get up to date on signage on the ICW, I came onto this video. Very well done, and it is so good to see charts from my "home" waters being used for the demonstrations. Oh yes, the Comox Bar, a crossing of that in inclement weather can be very interesting. Cheers.

    Very interesting. Yes, Region A is opposite of Region B as I recently experienced in those waters. Most of my sailing has been in the U.S. Thanks!

      Opposite but the east and west coast have opposite directions that mean you are "returning" wtf lol

      I do cover both regions quite emphatically Athena beginning of the video, but since I’m from Region B I have a few more examples from Region B. Please watch it again and let me know how it goes

    What type of buoy/beacon would show this FI (4) 15s 28m 12m ?

      Lighthouse. The giveaway is the 28m and the 12m. Height of 28m and visible for 12 miles, flashing groups of 4 white light

    You should have done separate Region A and B videos, this is confusing to newbies.

    Dreaming of going sailing someday. So much of it seems almost deliberately opaque. The lingo is silly and makes it hard to learn. The rules of the "road" and the signage seems laughably convoluted considering it's purpose is to clearly communicate danger.

      Thanks for the comment James. Sailing is an old past time steeped in tradition. To me the language and jargon serve to enrich the experience and connect me to a glorious age long past. On the surface to a layperson the Rules of the Road and Buoyage may seem convoluted but it serves a very complex and dynamic environment. Simplifying, especially internationally, is not as easy as one might think. Once you start to learn the rules and the nav aids you start to understand why it seems so convoluted.

      50 plus years sailing and I completely understand your concerns as a novice.
      from the outside it can seem daunting. but guess what, other than basic navigational rules to avoid running aground and such, there isn't much at all necessary to getting going!
      if you haven't already I suggest you just get started sailing on a small boat in a protected area. A friend or acquaintance will do just fine.
      you don't need to know any terms they will come in time... and they actually become fun.
      there are thousands and thousands of sailors out there of varying degrees of knowledge... you don't need to be expert to have a great time. the only things that are essential is how to stay safe such as checking your weather first, knowing the basic navigational markers to avoid running aground or colliding with another boat, and of course wearing a PFD and being very careful not to get banged by the Boom! wishing you all the best

      The World got it's act together, it is the US that is the odd man out, as it is with so many other standards!
      The areas around Japan and the Philipines, ect. is due to the strong US presence after WWII.

      Region B is wrong for me too, and I need to stick to videos for the UK otherwise I too will get all discombobulated! and remember things wrong.

    To off putting in UK we do it our way
