  • In this reaction we take a look at See U In History's video titled: "The 10 Avatars of Vishnu - Hindu Mythology". The ten avatars of Vishnu, known as the Dashavatara, represent a cornerstone of Hindu mythology and philosophy. Each avatar is believed to descend to Earth in times of crisis to restore cosmic order and protect dharma (righteousness). The avatars span various life forms and epochs, starting with Matsya (the fish) and Kurma (the tortoise), embodying stages of evolution and the primordial elements. They progress through Varaha (the boar) and Narasimha (the half-man, half-lion) representing triumph over evil, and Vamana (the dwarf) symbolizing humility. The subsequent avatars include Parashurama (the warrior sage), Rama (the ideal king), Krishna (the divine diplomat), Buddha (the enlightened one), and Kalki (the future avatar), emphasizing diverse paths to spiritual enlightenment and societal harmony, culminating in the ultimate cosmic balance and renewal.

I played the role of Krishna during the celebration of "Janamashtami" (birthday celebration of Lord Krishna) several times. I always feels like my soul know Krishna more than my mind do. Maybe I was Hindu in my previous life or was born near the time when Krishna was on earth. It's just what I think. Even my family believes Lord Vishnu is The Supreme God. We pray and respect him.

Hiranyakasipu was the brother of Hiranyaksha, the demon who was killed by Vishnu's 3rd Avatar. He wanted to avenge his brother's death. He did great penance and asked the God Brahma (the Creator) for immortality but it was denied. Brahma said he may ask for restriction of the ways of his death instead. Hiranyakashipu cunningly asked for a that he may not be killed :
1.Either by a man or an Animal or God or Demon etc
    2. He may not be killed inside or outside the house.
    3. He may not be killed at daytime or at night.
    4. He may not be killed using a live(living) object or a dead(non-living) object.
    5. He may not be killed on the ground or in the sky.
When he was doing penance his pregnant wife was told the stories of Lord Vishnu because of which his son, Prahlad became an ardent devotee of Vishnu.
Coming back from penance he created a havoc around the world and declared himself as God and asked everyone to worship him. Those who denied were killed. But his son always chanted the name of Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu tried his best to persuade his son but he failed. Then he decided to kill his own son. He used many ways but Vishnu saved everytime. Then he ordered his sister Holika to kill his son. Holika had a magic cloak which does not catch fire. So he wore it and took Prahlad in her lap and sat on a pyre. But due to Prahlad's devotion he was unhurt. As a punishment for Holika the magic cloak couldn't protect Holika and she burnt to ashes (Every year 'Holika Dahan' - The burning of Holika is performed. The next day is celebrated as 'Holi' - The festival of Colors).
After his sister's death, Hiranyakashipu was very angry and asked Prahlad where his Vishnu was for which Prahlad replied Vishnu is everywhere. Even in this pillar.
Hearing this the angry Hiranyakashipu broke the pillar from which 'Narasimha' emerged. After battling and defeating Hiranyakashipu he took him to the threshold of the entrance of the house and put him on his lap and tore his stomach to kill him.
    1. Narasimha is an amalgamation of Man and Lion - Not a man and not an animal.
    2. He was killed on the threshold of the entrance - Neither inside nor outside.
    3. He killed him at Evening - Not daytime or night time.
    4. He killed him with his claws - It's living since it grows but its tip is a dead part. So, neither living nor non-living.
    5. He was killed on the lap of Narasimha - Not on the ground nor in the sky.

Sorry to dissapoint you. 99% Sri lankan buddhists who follow ( theravada tradition = old and pure) do not believe that. Because lord buddha himself declared in many sutras that he is not a god nor a demon nor anykind of devata or asuras but a human and far superior than any god any supernatural power in this whole universe and that made him lord buddha. But most Sri Lankans believe in God vishnu as the guardian of Buddhism in sri lanka. And believe that God vishnu is completing his actions to become the next buddha " lord maithree budhha" . And most refer him as God "Natha' ( both names use for God Vishnu in sri lanka) . After a few hundred years of the maha parinirvana of lord buddha, indian hindu scholars tried to include buddhism into hinduism and MHayana and wajrayana buddhist traditions supported that idea. But theravada tradition which came first and directly from lord buddha ( gauthama buddha) doesnt believe in that. And there werw 26 lord buddhas before gauthama buddha and27is gauthama buddha, and 28 will be maithree buddha. H

In my opinion, the use of the term "mythology" and calling Hinduism as such is iffy because it's still practiced. But at the same time, you can't have religion without mythology, and you can't have mythology without religion. There will always be cases when things are not literal in religion or ways of life, but instead wise sayings and ways for people to comprehend things. Now, is all of Hinduism a mythology? That can be debated all you want. But just like Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Taoism, shamanism, and many others, Hinduism has ways of having its devotees understand what their practice, and the god or spirit or whatever they worship, wants from them. Without mythology and abstract ways of understanding things, religion would have a hard time gaining supporters when you can't understand the elements of one's own faith.

Budhha wasn't reincarnation of lord Vishnu it was a propaganda as Hindu wanted to counter Buddhism in ancient time, Hinduism was very weak at a time and people were more inclined towards Buddhism so what they did , told everyone that he was a reincarnation of Vishnu so that they can take credit for everything Buddha did 😅 I know it's pathetic , but Buddha wasn't even a God people made him a God , he was just a person who truly understood what life is all about. But nobody truly understood his lessons and made him a God which he never wanted to become 😅. Nowadays he is worshipped like a God but nobody follows his teachings.Everyone want to say "Jai shree Ram" but nobody follows Rama's path , and as a Hindu it's painful to see where my religion is going but it's just political agenda today . Nobody want to truly understand what is to worship God , I truly hope that someone like "Aadishankaracharya" or "Swami Vivekananda " teach us the meaning of being Hindu which is beyond hatred and jealousy, beyond idols and temples, beyond politics and country.

Here is a possible reason why all religions start with water.
Life started in water if you go by theory of evolution by Charles Darwin.
The first avatar the fish represents life starting from water.
The tortoise avatar symbolises that at some point life started living in both water and land like amphibians.
The Boar avatar represents life where life started completely living in land.
The narsimha lion headed avatar represents where human were still like animals
The dwarf symbolises the first time knowledge was introduced and yet the spine was still not developed.
The Parshuram avatar represents the iron age and tools age.
The Ram avatar introduces a golden period where humanity was introduced to politics.
The Krishna avatar talks about the age of kingdoms and wars of humanity and more politics.
Buddha was the symbol of enlightenment and dharma and karma. But I would like to clarify that no Gautam Buddha was not the 9th avatar. This was a different Buddha. I've reference that I'll quote later since it's been long time and I've forgotten most of it.
Kalki will symbolises the end of human race.

And Lord Kalki will be born in few years because this era is almost an end. So be spiritual if you wants to see him.. he will come and save the world from atomic war and will save good humans.. some sage says he already born. So anything is possible in this world...

Correction (and a few additions) -
    1) While Narasimha was indeed ferocious it is still a hot topic of debate that whom between Narasimha and Parashurama was fiercer.
    2) Parashuram was Shiva's devotee and not Vishnu's. He later interacted with his successor avatar Rama at Sita's Swayamvara and also trained Bhishma, Dronacharya, and Vasusena Karna - three of the most integral characters of the Mahabharata. He did eradicate all the Kshatriyas (spelled with the 'K' silent) - the warrior caste who were only later revived when Brahmana males repopulated the caste by siring offsprings on the surviving Kshatriya females left untouched of Parashurama's wrath.
    3) Rama's arrow pierced Ravana's navel and not his heart - this vital info was relayed to him via Vibishana (Ravana's youngest brother and later successor to Lanka) and not the sages.
    4) Kansha was Devaki's brother and thus Krishna's maternal uncle. Krishna was taken to Gokul where he spent his childhood. For reasons still debated, the populace made a migration to Vrindavan later where Krishna spent his adolescence with Radha. Krishna's life is the most complex and interesting of all the avatars due to his many facets in life. This begins with his childhood spent as a cowherd playing pranks and yet slaying demons when need be in sharp contrast. The villagers witness his divinity countless times - most famously when he balanced a mountain on his fingertip to protect them from Indra's fury of endless rain and storm. And yet they are still entranced with his Maya to the point that his divinity never scared them but made them surrender themselves willingly to enjoy his divinity. In sharp contrast, we then see Krishna in the Mahabharata where he is a seasoned warrior, able statesman, wily politician, and ruthless strategist. Yet all these facets until (and including) his death all revolve around the centerpiece of his Dharma. Krishna was also the most "realized" avatar of Vishnu - aware of his full potential from the very beginning.
    5) Ironically (as is the trend with all Avatars) despite giving up every earthly possession and bond in search of the truth of Dharma - Gautama Siddhartha actually managed to resonate the most with humanity due to the lack of obvious expression of Divinity from the ninth avatar. Despite partaking in the Maya all of the Avatars that entered the cycle of life and death - i.e., the Sixth Avatar (Bhagavan Parashurama), the Seventh Avatar (Shree Rama), and the Eighth Avatar (Bhagavan Shree Krishna) - were never subtle about expressing their divinity which in turn kept their fellow Humans separated at a respectable distance; and this gap was finally bridged by Gautama who labored and struggled as a mortal would to rediscover the divine truth of Dharma.

The Buddha avtar in hinduism is Saugata Buddha, not Gautam. Gautam was merely another so called sage who happened 2000 years after Saugata. Saugata was born in Gaya ji which is also a major place of pilgrimage for hindus. Gautam was born in lumbini in present nepal. Gautam was an athiest while Saugata advocated the existence of soul and God. The Buddha idols you see actually are of Saugata Buddha, not Gautam. The followers of Gautam usurped Saugata's legacy to grab political power.

The Hindu scripture is always to be seen in two forms. One for the common people to follow and the other for intellectuals to evolve further. These dashavatars also have stories like mentioned here but they represent scientific evolution
Matsya, the Fish - Only water
Kurma, the turtle - Ability to live in water and land
Varaha, the boar- Crude form of living thing on land
Narasimha, the half-lion - Half animal and half human
Vamana, the shortan - Fully human, but physically under developed
Parasurama, the violent man - Physically developed man but still primitive instincts
Rama - Fully developed ideal human being
Krishna, the intelligent- Ability to maneuver various issues, start of Kaliyug
Budha, the saint - Last chance to rebuild humanity
Kalki, the Terminator - To annihilate all bad and restart with Saryayug
It is hard to imagine that this could be coincidental with scientific chronology of human evolution.

I'm a Theravada buddhist from Sri Lanka. Traditional Buddhist schools whether it be Theravada or Mahayana do not recognize Buddha as an avatar of Vishnu. Avatar concept in Hinduism cannot be aligned with Buddhist philosophy, it contradicts. Saying that Buddha is an avatar of Vishnu and Vishnu has another avatar called "Kalki" in the future, indirectly says that the Buddha was not enlightened according to Buddhist philosophy. It's disrespectful in terms of the perspective of Buddhists.
Buddhist enlightenment as described in Theravada school of thought is like the extinguishing of a flame of a lamp. Flame of an oil lamp is fed by various things including oil, high temperature and oxygen. Once these facts are disintegrated, the flame is ceased to exist. The flame doesn't exist afterwards, so as the enlightened being. The enlightened being doesn't exist after the completion of enlightenment known as "Anupadisesa Parinirvana". Enlightened being doesn't unify with a God or a supreme entity. It doesn't exist in heavens as well.
If God Vishnu's last avatar was Buddha, then it is acceptable. If Buddha was a birth of Vishnu in the form of a human, the entity called Vishnu must be dissappeared with the death of Buddha, according to Theravada Buddhist philosophy.

Hey, in watching this video, a few noteworthy points caught my attention:
    1. The video touches upon the Hindu theory of evolution through the first five avatars of Vishnu. It's intriguing how each avatar represents a different stage of evolution - from the fish, restricted to water, to the tortoise, capable of traversing both land and water, and so forth. Each avatar seems to symbolize a transition and progression in complexity and consciousness, from the crude and uncivilized to the more refined with humane values.
    2. While the information presented in the video is somewhat accurate, I noticed some contextual inaccuracies in each story and mispronunciations of names. Precision in these details could enhance the overall understanding and appreciation of the narratives.
    3. It's important to recognize that within Hinduism, there's a balanced reverence for all gods - there's no hierarchy of popularity. Each deity holds significance and is worshiped throughout the year within the organized framework of the Hindu Sanatana Dharma. This organized system reflects the deep-rooted spirituality and inclusivity within Hinduism.

10 avatar also shows the evolution of life on earth, god came in the forms according to the stage of evolutions. Life began in water (Matsya/fish form) then amphibians ( tortoise form) then comes land animals herbivores ( varah/ bore form) then carnivores (narsimha/ lion form) then comes ancient man living alone no family structure (Parshuram) then in society where people started to socialize and kingdoms were made, society was more simple and ( Ram as ideal person and a king). Then society became more complex, politics was the way to go, Krishna came as who as a king teaches about the power, how dangerous or good things power and politics can bring to society. Then comes Buddha to remind the capitalist society that our aim is not just to earn and spend there is so much pain in the world we can overcome the pain/ bad influence by connecting with god. Kalki will be coming at the end of kalyug when all the evil will be at its peak.

Although this is a good start, the stories are cut short too much for you guys to cohesively understand. why Vishnu did what, why and how?. In the future maybe some other video clips of detailed stories would be good.
Also, Buddha...I'm not sure everyone agrees with that... If you are in the Hindu majority region they would say yes. If you are in a Buddhist majority region they would say NO!
In some texts, the avatar number says different names. This debate started in the 4th or 5th century and is still not decided.

weed out the mystical or mythical aspects if you want like buddha did if it's too complex for you then pay attention to sadhanas or practices in both traditions and learn what is commonly happening as a result, anybody can realize what avatars of vishnu, shiva, mother and budha are actually teaching for eg. what is the nature of consciousness, the nature of reality and it's source and the connection between the consciousness and reality. those who knows this 3 things and are able to implement it in their way of life effortlessly are enlightened.
in my case i am comfortable with all complexites this reality throws at me.

Ram and lakshaman didn't go to hunt, first ram went to catch a deer that his wife sita wanted to pet, but he didn't know that deer was the asur marich disguised as a deer to lure him out into the woods. An enraged rama fired a divine arrow that pierced maarich's heart, before dying maarich cried out lakshman's name in an agonizing voice of ram, to lure lakshman into the woods. So that his nephew Ravana the demon king can proceed to kidnap sita in the absence of either of them. Maarich was Ravana's uncle that took the disguise of a golden deer. Then we all know the rest of the story.

I would like to explain the childhood prank stories of Shri Krishna as Butter-Thief :
During that time when Shri Krishn is a kid in Gokul village. The Gokul village use to come under Kingdom of Mathura , which was ruled by Demon King Kans.
King Kans ordered that Butter , Curd of every house-hold is property of kingdom and should be deposited to Mathura.
Shri Krishna as a kid raised question over this that the kids of Gokul had the first right over the Butter ( and for that matter on every resources of Gokul) than the king and King is actually stilling this from us by brute force.
But obviously , who is going to listen to a kid against a King.
So Shri Krishn as a kid gather his friends from Gokul and started stilling Butter from each household for kids of Gokul as a team work and send a message that if King is not providing justice and if ignore the rights of citizen then citizens do not have any other option left to take back their rights by other means and that do not come under sin.
Shri Krishn is special and all-powerful avatar , who used to reply in the language of oppressor.
