Yeah, here in the rust belt we get F****cked on our vehicles. I remember watching a show 30 years ago of some guys in a "JUNK YARD" picking car parts in California. That wasnt a junkyard, it was a smorgasbord!
No matter how much you fight it and try to prevent it, the rust always wins.

SO stoked to find your video and your wealths of knowledges!
I am resurrecting a clearly underappreciated or loved-too - much '88 XJ Laredo. It has the 4.0, the 5spd manual tranny, 4wd, and a 3,1/2" lift on stock, 15" cast aluminum rims mounted with 2" spacers on 30" trailer tires... aaaand a cracked windshield... and some fluid leaks... and a seriously progressive death wobble... and some creative vacuum routing... and a host of electrical problems... was stuck in 4wd...
    but I love it!
Got real used tires, replaced most of the front end, worked out the vacuum issues and most of the electrical but still no dash or dome lights and no speedo. Still looks like hell but getting fun to drive now. I made a 2" anvil my hood ornament just for fun.

Not sure if you guys will see this or not, love watching your junk yard videos. I wish you guys had this channel back when I still had my old WJ. Not sure if you guys were aware or not or if someone has mentioned this previously but since they dont put the year of the vehicle on the stickers anymore if you want a way to tell the year look at the 10th digit of the vin on any make doesnt matter. it will tell you the year of the car. Pre 2000 it was alphabetical so an R would be a 1994, an S would be a 1995. in 2000 they went to numbers so a year 2000 would have a 0 as the 10th digit and a 2009 would have a 9. In 2010 they went back to alphabetical again so a 2010 will have an A as the 10th digit, and a 2011 would have a B and so on. Again this works on every make, learned it from the business card of a local junk yard and it has helped me a lot. Maybe someday ill get another WJ but until then the Jeep information I get from your channel helps a lot. keep up the great content!

My grandma had a 92 XJ Laredo in blue, which my grandpa bought new, she drove it up till she was 90 or so, only had under 80,000 miles or so, it was supposed to be my first car, but I was only 12 and so instead my mom sold it for a quick buck, but I digress, I ended up with my 99 4Runner and life goes on, still the one that got away

The V8 ZJ is a good steering upgrade, the tie-rod is way beefier than a 4.0 ZJ or XJ. It's a metal bar as opposed to a hollow tube. It's also a lot easier since you don't have to swap knuckles. Might be worth running for people that want upgrades but aren't building rock crawlers.

I just bought a 91 XJ with 6 inch lift kit in the front and 4 inch in the back for $2k. Has dual electric fans, 31 inch tires, no rust, and engine felt strong with no problem. Just some minor body dents, rear seats missing, no Catalytic converter (which i need in Cali, ugh) and other minor stuff that needs fixing/replacing. Guy says he wasn't bullshitting that there was no mechanical problem, so hopefully it doesn't. Still gonna fix it up. This video is in fav now. Thank you for the load of information! I got lucky. My XJ was a $750 gamble. I bought it not running. Fixed 2 ground wires and it runs great. I've since given it a good tune up, water pump, radiator, thermostat and housing, and all the hoses. I've also been dealing with maintenance issues like brake pads, rotors, shoes, drums, and fluid, and changing the rest of the fluids. This won't be a trail rig, just a daily driver and I want to keep it running for several more years. I need to replace the passenger side floor, but I may cut the whole front floor out and install a fresh panel from side to side. I have a gasket set and rear leaf springs and hardware, but I'm waiting for spring to deal with that. It's cold out and sagging springs and a couple leaks just aren't that important. Thanks for this video. Better seats and a beefier steering setup are things I have been considering and it's good to know I can grab OEM parts and get great results.

97-98 xjs have sticker badges except the jeep logos front and rear. 99-01 have the newer all 3d style badges. Another give away telling a 97-98 and 99-01 is the roof rails the 97-98 have full length rails and the 99-01 have half roof rails. If you have a 99-01 Cherokee with the 4.0l you will want to check on the cats once in a while which does do great for emissions but heats up the heads more and does end up cracking. Also the same years that had head cracking problems. A 91-96 HO 4.0l jeep head will be a perfect replacement. Another good tip is 97-98 heater cores are different than 99-01. 97-98 have a mechanical mixer for heat and cold where the 99-01 have a electronic mixer.

Easiest way to tell the difference in 97+ is that 96- had the 8 slot grill, the hard angle front clip and fenders, the vent window on the front doors. Although they could have been swapped previously, but the one thing ALWAYS constant is the rear hatch. 96- will always have a push button latch and 97+ will be a handle.

  • @walterlegere1403
    @walterlegere1403 2 ปีที่แล้ว

At 12:20 - I have a 92 2-door 4.0 HO 5 speed with 4:10 gears from an old 88 YJ high pinion model with lockers front and rear. Experience has taught me that drum breaks on an XJ off-road rig is a total pain and if you are doing any serious off-roading with your older XJ then do the rear disc swap if you can afford it! You will be very glad you did. In water or mud the rear drums constantly get packed full of mud and dirt and if you don't constantly clean them out there's a good chance your rear breaks will not operate at all. If you leave all that mud in there and it dries it turns to hardened clay. It is impossible to clean out the rear drums without removing them. All that moisture rusts the internal components of your drum brakes like the star wheel adjuster and springs which will completely render the "self-adjust" feature of the star wheel inoperable and you will end up having to manually adjust your rear breaks constantly. I have been told that the older Grand Cherokee D35 disc breaks is almost a direct swap to the XJ D35. The only changes are the outer bearing retaining plate and the rear e-break cable. I have not done the swap yet but plan to in the near future. I have done the front sway bar and the Grand Cherokee center-link swap on the front suspension and steering. Much beefier components.

I put a WJ Overland steering wheel in my XJ. Consideration for swapping steering wheels is that junkyards won’t sell the airbag, so you have to deal with removing/swapping that component.
The Ford Taurus transmission cooler is a solid upgrade. I’ve got that in my XJ.
Ford Explorer 8.8 will have 4.11s and some with an LSD. Will need spring perch mods and a spacer, but good upgrade.

The Venting Bronze rear windows on 2-door XJ's are really nice, and work on Any 2-door from 85 to 2001. You get a Little bit more ventilation, they look cool and add security as you can't see in (in daylight), so no one steals what they can't see.

On my 1996 XJ Sport, the only mod you covered that I did was getting a leather Grand Cherokee driver's seat and replacing my original, collapsed seat. Note that the nuts from the WJ seat have a bigger flange so slightly better. I backed it up with some stainless fender washers.
Every weld in the old seat failed, and the rails had ripped through the nuts on the studs. There was literally nothing holding it down.

All 4.0l XJ's had a mechanical and electric fan from the factory. I have never seen an XJ with a single mechanical fan. This video is the first I have ever heard of an XJ having a single mechanical fan. Also, the engine bay was redesigned in '87 to specifically fit the 4.0l. A 4.0L can not be easily swapped into an '84-86 XJ. And to find the year, just check the door tag. lol

Also - A note about wheel spacers on an older XJ like my 92 with a D30 stock front end. The D30 uses the crappy 2 piece front axles through a hub assembly. Putting larger/wider tires on the front will almost necessitate the need for at least 1" spacers to clear your suspension components without rubbing. Doing this puts an enormous amount of stress on the front outer hubs which are sealed non-greaseable units because it pushes weight out away from the center line of the vehicle. Expect these hubs will have a much shorter life span then normal. This is why so many XJ off-roaders try to swap to the D44 for the front. It's expensive and time consuming but it solves a lot of suspension problems that can occur with the stock D30 like death wobble when suspension components become loose or worn out. Also, I should note that many larger tire retailers will not service vehicles with wheel spacers because they claim that they cannot achieve proper lug nut torque with wheel spacers installed and consider them a liability.

22:35 we have a 99 two wheel drive XJ. Cut out the flat section of exhaust pipe that ran around what ever 4 wheel drive stuff was in that location up front, then replaced it with a proper round exhaust pipe. The jeep will make some tire noise and spin the tires when you punch it. it will also spin the tires from a 15mph to 20mph roll. We put high flow racing cat (Cheaper than a new old stock) on it after the stock one was stollen.

You can swap the brake booster and master cylinder from a 95 to earlier. The 95 booster is a double diaphragm. Most of the time you will need to make a spacer behind the booster for the proper pedal travel and you will need new brake lines to your metering block.

**A FEW CORRECTIONS** That white 2 door XJ in the beginning was "5-speed" not "2wd"... It is the 5-speed XJs that came with 3.07 gearing. I misspoke. Additionally, there is not front D35 axle. I misspoke AGAIN!.. Lastly, All 4.0 XJs had a mech fan AND an e-fan.. it is the 2.5 and 2.8's that had other options.. that is where you can mix and match to find the fan setup best for you.

There were heated Limited seats. You need the seats, the controller under the passenger seat and switches in the center console. My passenger seat is a limited, so damn comfy. I have a later model GC driver's seat they almost match. The GC seat was supposed to have heat as well. Neither worked when I wired everything, but all the poewr adjustments do. I have a power lock switch from an Explorer installed by the tailgate for locking up from the back. It's hidden in the top of that cubby on the right side. There was a nearly perfect place to cutout for it. The wiring runs straight forward to the wiring for the passenger door along the right side. Cruise control, take the steering wheel, clock spring, and vacuum control unit. Plug it all in should work. I also swapped in a 242 w/full time 4wd from a Limited. You need some of the harness for the new TC and the tang on the gearbox, and the lever w/ the light panel. One of the most fun vehicles so far as junkyard upgrades goes.

a few more corrections, the v6 pre 1987 xj had a shorter nose and smaller engine bay than the 87 and up models. the 4 cyl xj has a much stronger clutch fan and looks like it is purely mech fan but it is not, it also has an e fan.

FYI - none of the WJ tie rod/steering/etc will fit an xj/mj/tj, wj's are wider. You can certainly modify it to fit, but at that point you may as well do the same amount of work to make your own stronger tie rod/etc. The knuckles do fit though, and can accept tj or late xj hubs with an adapter from jks to keep the same wheel lug pattern.

Great episode guys, normally I don't critique your videos but I have a couple. On road kill or dirt everyday they talked a little about running that oil, T-4 15w 40. They sold me on it for my 2001 high mileage Xj. One caveat I don't let my xj sit outside during the winter it's in a heated 50° Barn at all times. So not worried about the initial flow rate of that 15 rating on the oil. Please don't use old brake lines. Use That I think the copper nickel brake line, is so cheap and I got this up-to-date flare kit man makes doing brake lines piece of cake. I had to change everyone on my xj. The only mode I have not done is the alternator upgrade. Always look forward to your videos. Peace out. 👍
