  • This is the story of how Cú Chulainn came into this world. Or rather one version of it. There are versions in which he was born three times with three different fathers. Other versions say that Deichtire never came back and her sister became foster mother to CúChulainn. But as always, I collected everything I found and created a version that contains the version of events I came across most.
What effects does the blood of his otherworldly father have on young Setanta? And how did he get the name Cú Chulainn? Did he ever meet his father? Those questions will be answered during the next videos. So stay tuned and don't miss the next video.

Thank you for the video it was very well done. I always liked revisiting passed information I've heard or learned before. Only because it brings you back to a place, time or a good memory were you first heard the story.

Now I'm curious, which version did you hear before? Did Deichtire get back from the otherworld or did her sister Findchóem raise Setanta alongside her own son?

@@kianukasceltictales3403 There are a lot of versions of his life. For instance I heard 2 different readings of the Táin Bó Cúailgne which he's in, 4 different ways how he killed the Smiths dog & 2 stories of him with The Mórrígan. It all depends on where you are in Ireland but that's the best & worse thing about the lore. I really wish sometimes they catalog things better over the ages - you know what I mean.

I know what you mean. There are so many versions of literally every myth. But that is thanks to the oral tradition I think. Still I love every one of them😊

@@kianukasceltictales3403 I know but with orally passing down the stories which is great. However they should have wrote them down also. They could have ogham or a little bit later old Irish. Some reference that is a better understanding of ancient times.

@@-RONNIE The very nature of Irish mythology stems back to a time before Christianity brought literacy to the island, meaning they were passed down through the generations by oral tradition, twisting and changing akin to Chinese whispers. In this way, better cataloging wasn't an option, Ogham could only detail minimal information i.e. 'Ronnie Son of Smith' due to the difficulty of accurate carving (hence letters being straight/ no curves, like Norse runes), and the general secular community was illiterate well after the 1st millennium. Keeping records was also difficult, especially prior to the 7th century due to the expense of velum production. For example, it wasn't until the 7th century, when early Irish laws were being recorded, the annals of ulster, and other secular texts such as mythology were written down by the church, the latter being less a priority of course. This brings about an entirely other debate about the influence, ulterior agendas, and propaganda the church had on these pre-Christian tales. Similar propaganda by the Kings/ state to connect their family lineage and province to our past heroes to claim rights. We could go further into the loss of material due to Viking raids and even the natural deterioration of the earlier manuscripts. There are so many reasons how/ why these tales have changed. I personally think that without oral tradition, these tales would not only have been lost to time, but wouldn't have morphed and developed into the masterpieces they are today.
