No, there were no Covid checks of any kind at customs in Albania, just needed to show my passport, quick and easy. However I was asked for my vaccination card when I checked in for the flight in Italy.

Don't be afraid when Albanians talk to you. They are just curious and friendly. Most of them just want to be helpful to tourists or just looking to practice their English and a new story to tell their friends.

Lot of people who travel usually plan to get a rental car. So maybe its not a bad idea to do a video where you explain all the nuances that come with it (based on your experience) like charges for tolls, parking, insurance, drop off points, customer service etc that people should be aware of. It should be an informative one to many people.

Be careful driving in Albania. The speed limits are unreasonably low and there are lots of cops looking to fine you. I followed what local drivers did. And when I was the only car on the road I took it slow. When I was handing the rental car back I was asked if I got any tickets and he seemed surprised that I hadn't. Also the same thing happened to me in Tirana. A guy came up to me and started asking where I am from and what I do. Even asked how much I make, lol.

Yeah Albanians ask about anything how many kids you have, what school, your salary, all sorts. It's in the culture how they are raised especially if over 40 years old and from out of Tirana originally not that they want to do something bad. You get people like that as well like in every city.

@Gabriel Traveler Italy is notorious for issuing parking tickets especially to the tourists. I received two parking tickets almost a year after I left Italy for €80 each plus rental company charged me €50x2 as admin charge (just to pass on my address to traffic authorities). I changed my credit card after reversing the rental company charges via my bank and told both to bigger off. Apparently they still chasing me without luck. Looking at the confusing and expensive motorways of Italy they should be paying people to drive on them 😅

Gabriel to pay that ticket easier you had an additional 3 options:
    1. Find a branch that has banking services in Italy, ie HSBC.
    2. Assuming you have 2+ credit cards, report the card you used to rent the vehicle stolen. They will not be able to charge your credit card once it is stolen. In the meantime they will send you a new credit card in the mail.
    3. Since you received the ticket in Monopoly, you could have mailed them 30 Monopoly money… lol!
Happy travels! Stay away from Lazarra region for your safety.

About one week later, I was charged about $49 on my rental CC, and that is it and case closed! I was so relief, and that should be the way to handle citation for car rental. I feel your pain. I had a similar experience trying to order a magazine to Canada from Europe. They would not accept a credit card, and I was not able to send the $30 as a wire transfer with the IBAN info they provided, needed to get a lot of additional information - the address of the business, phone, bank name, address, account etc, etc. When I finally gathered all the info and entered everything into the online form, I wasn't able to complete the transaction because apparently the minimum amount that can be sent is $100. What a joke, I was so mad!

    • @AndreGerritzen
      @AndreGerritzen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Eva. I think the problem with wire transfer comes from the american side of the atlantic ocean. In europa the IBAN/SWIFT-System was invented to transfer money easly between bank accounts & countrys. For money transfer you online need the IBAN-number and the amount of money. All other informations are optional. Normaly there are 3 optinal fields in a transfer form:
The receiver - for you personal information so you can easly find this transaction in your transaction list.
The BIC/SWIFT-number of the bank but this information is also in the IBAN-number
The comment field - This is for informations like customer number or this gabriel case the number of license platt or your order number for the magazin.
In europe credit cards are not very popular. Mostly the people use debit cards because it is cheaper then credit cards.
But an online shop without any additional paying methods is very suspicious. Maybe it was scam or an old "abandoned online shop"....

A friend was stopped at Immigration at JFK when they said there was a warrant for his arrest due to unpaid auto tickets from a trip 2 years before. He didn't even know about them. Once he paid and made a statement they let him in. It does seem that rental cars are a nightmare for any tickets especially when you are trying to pay/know know about them. Area of scams I guess. Paying by credit/debit card would be the obvious option as any traveller most likely has one.

Wow G, keep us informed if anything happens. You would think the car hire place would take your payment and pay the fine.

Gabriel, when you say had fast internet speeds at the hotel, please expound on what you typically see as fast internet in your travels.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't usually check actual speeds, I just go on a combination of how quick it is to surf the internet and how quickly a video uploads. I do show the actual speed in an upcoming video of Italy. But that's in one of my videos that I won't be editing until sometime later. At my hotel in Tirana then a video would upload in an hour or two, which isn't super fast but is still pretty good compared to the genuinely slow places where it might take days to upload. It's quite common while traveling to have crazy slow speeds in which it can take a day or two or more to get a video uploaded. So when it happens in a few hours you're stoked.

You can use Wise (formerly Transferwise) to make international payments. Quick and cheap…

I felt the frustration, what a joke for it to be in 2022 so complicated! Just have a pay pal some credit card option to be paid

Speaking of which.. (after watching your video from Corsica) you just passed (at 5.34 + 6.26) two of the 173371 constructed concrete war bunkers made in Albania from 1960-1980'ties. Devil is in the details

Albania is amazing! Crazy story -- hopefully you can save the screen shots of the interaction with the police officer in whatsapp & save the screen shots of the payment that you sent with your bank. If they charge your credit card - dispute the charge and show them the screenshots. Should be all good!

I got a fine in Greece once for €100 and also had my licence confiscated, apparently i was driving down the wrong way on a one way street but of course there was absolutely no indication it was a one way street, lots of hassle trying to get my licence back as like you i was leaving the island Samos that night, since then i have never rented a car while travelling again, on top of the hassle of something going wrong with the car you end trying to dodge an obstacle course with all the potential fines, parking, speeding etc etc, i find it just causes me so much stress that every time i drop it back it feels like a weight off my shoulders, your story was very interesting and sounds exactly like the situation i had although my problem was trying to get my drivers licence back

Gabe wow ..personally I would have cancelled my credit card therefore rental company cannot charge the ticket....you tried so much to pay too much bureaucracy.......I have many credit cards when I travel

Italians really made your life hard. If you transfered 29,40 EUR to renting company or any of employees and they payed the ticket in your name in Italy....... Really rude behaviour. They could really help you out but obviously they are not that kind of people.

It’s funny you mention getting a parking ticket in playa del Carmen, I was there for a week about ten years ago now and rented a scooter at my resort and took it during the day thru the town and I got nervous and eventually returned it a day early because I drove past three or four separate instances in the same day around the town of police having stopped tourist rental cars and one scooter. Everyone knows there are some of the shadiest police in Mexico anywhere in the world and I figured they were on the hunt to make some money that day and were just pulling over any tourist they saw driving. I felt lucky as if I drove by after the police traps were already sprung and did not want to push my luck! Lol I high tailed it back to my resort entrance which had the usual military checkpoint for security and thankfully made it back because as I was coming out of a round about to the street my hotel was on a police vehicle stared me down hard that was parked in the middle. I gave a friendly nod and a smile and could tell they were hesitating but knew I was driving towards the resorts which were less than a kilometer away. Needles to say my heart was pounding until I made it thru the resort checkpoint. I love Mexico but it’s not a place reccomend renting personal transport and instead take Ubers and buses/taxis when not inside resort areas.

I love Albania and it's people. There is so much to see, so why the hurry? You cannot miss Gjirokaster, Sarande, Dhermi, the Valbona Valley and so much more. I spent 2 weeks there and it was not nearly enough time.

Gab! Next time you can use transfer wise for international payments. It’s convenient, fast and has very low fees ;)

I wouldn't worry about the ticket, if there is a charge made on your card, you have the proof you wired the money and a WhatsApp trail to show you did everything required, and that change should be refunded

I wondered do you have to buy a sim card for each country you travel too
Or are there region wide sim cards for Europe?

I didn't hear the whole story but if you didn't I would suggest calling the rental company. I personally am a little bit stubborn and would fight those tickets as they are predatory and lack basic due process.

  • @rasheednode

The simplest possible solution to parking ticket was that the car rental company accepted around $ 30 and paid it to the authority, no?
