Good you moved out of Portland. I did too. The coast of Oregon had a giant tsunami like that in January of 1700 AD. It was caused by a 9.1 megathrust earthquake like that in Indonesia and Japan 2011. Geologists discovered this in the late 1980's which is when i first moved to Portland! They found out they occur on average every 250 years. I ignored it but I eventually moved out of Portland because it kept bothering me. The 9.1 earthquake will feel like a 7.5 in Portland and Seattle but last 5 minutes destroying much of the cities.
The closet land to the epicenter of that earthquake was the Banyak Islands off the west coast of Sumatra. Spent 2 weeks in the Banyak Islands in 1993. Total tropical paradise that was unknown at the time. We lived like Robinson Crusoe on an island with nothing but a few basic huts that were only used by the locals when they went there to harvest the copra. No electricity, toilet, anything, Had the guy who brought us there come every 3-4 days and bring up basic supplies. Rice, eggs, pasta, etc. We were there because my daughter was born on Pulau Weh a few months earlier. Had to take a ferry from Banda Aceh to get to Pulau Weh. Shocked hearing about the tsunami 11 years later.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos From what I heard they suffered little damage probably because of the proximity to the epicenter.. If you think about it everything spread out from there and grew and gained momentum the further if went.
