  • I went all-out installing light strips around my home. We gathered the best light strips on Amazon and tested 6 different options. We now have awesome lighting under our cabinets, beneath our bed, behind the TV, and more.
    We tested inexpensive dumb light strips and show how to make them smart. We also use some smart light strips to show the extra features and help you decide if it's worth the higher price.

    I realized you cut out "Alexa" so that my echo wouldn't activate. That's really thoughtful and I love you.

      Instead of making a separate post I'll add this here. I totally agree. I came here for the specific topic and loved the forethought of cutting out "Alexa." Its quite annoying to watch these things and have the echo chime in unintended.

    When I was deployed, I purchased some on Amazon. I had a 16 foot strip running around my little bed in my jack shack. It was great! definitely worth getting some. I could dim the brightness, I had my own light sources and at night when my roomates slept, I could switch to red and dim them down to not disturb anyone. They get super bright too

    Thanks for sharing this info. This past weekend, I tried the Lifx light strip and after numerous attempts was unable to interface with the app, so I returned it and purchased the Philips Hue 2nd generation which is much brighter than the first generation, more competitive with Lifx and the connection was seamless. I am very happy with my Philips Hue which is also expandable to a whole house system.

    Your videos are so incredibly helpful!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make them. I had no idea these light strips could be so handy! When we remodeled we added so many light strips outside (we call it our pavilion, but it's really the best decked out set up for Super Bowl w a whole outdoor kitchen, dinning room, and living room) but omg dang these light strips are even better!! So impressed. Watched several of your videos now and I love your calm, approachable, but thoroughly informative demeanor =)

    How long do light strips last...does one "bulb" go bad or the whole strip at the same time? Are the "bulbs" changeable or do I need to buy the whole strip again? What is the best brand for the longest lasting? If I order a strip that is a little too long, can it be cut?

    I did that some thing with my old bed when I was single. It was a fun project. I used clear plastic L profile wallboard corner protectors to mount them to the under side of the bed and get them pointed down. The tape that came with the strips didn't hold but I was able to find some that is used for car door trim that was super sticky and worked great.

    I bought some Nexlux strips for my son's bunkbed. Its a Full over Full so the bottom bed would get real dark. Now we can read to him and then he can dim them down as a night light. The ones I got use an app called MagicHome and work with Alexa directly or can use IFTTT and ST. I've got some left over but I need a new controller.

  • @tabaccopuro

    I know the feeling of buying "too many LED STRIPS".... I'm buying stuff to light up my apt in "daylight led strips", but with a twist. I want to do it via a "solar powered" 12v battery.
    I noticed you said you were powering a bunch of strips from one "powed supply"??? I saw some videos that said to have multiple "power points" to avoid dimming at the end of say 3 or 5 connected strips. I haven't proven/disproven this yet, still in the planning and gathering stages. What's your experience with this? How many feet of strips do you have on one supply?

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an interesting approach. So all the light strips are plugged into their own outlet except for the ones under the kitchen cabinets. Those are technically one light strip roll but cut into multiple pieces with connectors. Too many connectors can reduce the power and make the lights flicker or not work properly. The 32 foot light strips under the bed are the longest ones out of the group and I didn't need to cut those but they have no issues with power or flickering. I haven't made a light strip longer than 32 feet but if it was then multiple power points would probably be necessary.

      You don't need multiple supplies, just wire the same power supply to multiple points spread out on the strip if you are doing long strips

    Hey Reed! Love your videos! I just bought the smart life motion sensor and loving that I can just walk into a room and not have to switch on the light. But my question is can I use it so that it turns off the light when there is no motion detected? Thanks for the help!

    Nice video!
    Just a quick doubt, I'm considering buying the yeelight lightstrip to put under my shelf and illuminate my desk (3 feet distance). So, in your opinion, the brightness would be enough to work/study?

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The lights would be good for something like that. It just doesn't light up the whole room like the LIFX lights do but if they were over a desk it would be plenty of light.

    I bought offbrand smart light strips, and while the colors are a little inaccurate, they seem to work fine. I believe the specific brand was Popotan or something.

      Thanks! Sorry for the late reply. Yes the monitor arms are from Fully. Here is a link www.fully.com/jarvis-dual-monitor-arm.html The monitor arms are a bit more money than others out there but they match the standing desk from the same company so well. That is the main reason I got them and they also work great.

    Hi,I am in UK and have done a few installations of 5050 led strips all in kitchens ,all smartphone controlled and ALL had the same bug,,,,the crappy 3M tape they all come with,I eventually had to develop my own way to stick them on but I guess you never have this problem or do you? IMHO the inability to stay in place for ever is the biggest problem with LED adhesive lighting,could you cover this subject please?

    I'm looking to research some decent cheap light strips for less important accent lighting such as for under the bed to use in conjunction with the awesome Lifx strips.
