  • This is a taste test/review of three different candy bars: Nestle Butterfinger, Hershey’s 5th Avenue and NECCO Clark Bar.
    * The Nestle Butterfinger is “crispety, crunchety, peanut-buttery”. It was about $1. 1 bar = 250 calories
    * The Hershey’s 5th Avenue is “crunchy peanut butter in a rich, chocolate coating”. It was about $1. 1 bar = 260 calories
    * The NECCO Clark Bar is “real milk chocolate - real peanut butter crunch”. It was 89 cents at Big Lots. 1 bar = 260 calories

Back in the stone ages, there used to be something called milk chocolate. Nowadays a lot of this candy is made with something called compound chocolate. Which is pretty much cocoa, candle wax, and lard. What grand times we live in.

Yesterday I tried my first 5th Avenue, YUM! I thought it was more tender than Butterfinger and also tasted a bit of honey. I'm so glad you guys compared them! And I've never had a Clark bar (I don't know who sells them around here... it's not a bar I see much or ever) but if it tastes like Palmer, 'nuf said! Curiosity sated.

Generally, I prefer Butterfinger over 5th Avenue, but both are pretty good. 100% agree that the peanut butter is less present and the chocolate dominates with the 5th Avenue.
Interestingly, I don't think that Clark bars are made any more. After NECCO went under, and other companies bought their brands, Boyer (maker of the Mallow Cup) bought that. They seem to make a Clark Cup now, but no bar.
Another thing that is related but is very much its own beast is the Zagnut bar for Hershey's. It for goes chocolate all together and instead coats the bars in toasted coconut. I know all of this, as I recently did something of a comparative taste-test myself.

But that description got me thinking... if I were at that Big Lots and all I had was 89 cents... the clerk would've sold me a Clark Bar instead. I wouldn't mind.

As a European I found out about 5th Ave through Stargate (1994). Later found out that 5th Ave used to have real milk chocolate, as well almonds, before Hershey bought it from Ludens. What a shame. Ref. Candyblog.net.

I must say, of the three, 5th Avenue is my favorite of all. It has a more "crunchy" peanut butter, as opposed to Butterfinger, which is smoother. Clark Bar falls somewhere in the middle of the two. Wouldn't turn down any one of them, if offered to me, though.

Clark Bars aren't well known anymore and are hard to find. They are the oldest combination candy bar dating back to 1917 made by the same family for years in Pittsburgh. They lost their popularity as the company has been bought and sold many times. They need an owner who can make them with the original recipe and manufacturing process and better marketing. If you bought a cheap Clark Bar at Big Lots, it's obviously from some old, unsold stash so now it's Big Lots turn to unload them. Get a fresh Clark Bar and you might have a different opinion. Clark Bars and Zagnuts were more common and so much better tasting than Butterfingers and 5th Avenues while I was a kid in the Pittsburgh area.

5th avenues are my favorite candy bar, and far superior to Butterfinger (way too sweet, and the filling is too hard/sticky and fake orange colored) or Clark (which is almost impossible to find). I've noticed over the past couple of years 5th avenues seem to be getting more popular again, with more stores carrying them. I'm pretty sure the only reason Butterfinger outsells them is because they spend so much more on marketing and have Bart Simpson as a mascot.
