Most east coast spots between NJ and OBX are glorified shorebreak. I can’t speak for this one in particular. But this is why you see lots of barrels and maybe 1/5 the surfer actually makes it.

It’s not the wave that will kill ya it’s the exhaustion and being in a mild hypothermic state. But idc it’s a love and passion and I’ll gladly die surfing these kind of ways. I always tell my my mom on big winter day, I love you and if I don’t come back know I died happy and had a smile on my face.

The biggest I’ve seen swell I’ve seen on the east coast with a Hawaiian surfer is probably the Koa Barley hurricane swell few years ago.

I grew up surfing in New Jersey in the 80s and yeah this is as big as I've ever seen it. We had some big days back then but nothing like this. Actually looks like a lot of places would just be closing out with this size.
Did you see the article about the lack of continental shelf here in Jersey that provides for that every other multiple decades swell. It’s a total historical and geologically uncommon occurence.

I have surfed California for a couple years and Hawaii for a decade. Mid Atlantic waves always kicked my ass more than anywhere else. Has to be because it was shorebreak and offshore shallow shoals at Assateague Island National Seashore. On Maui, Koki in Hana reminded me of our Mid Atlantic surf. Heaving shorebreak, but rideable.
We're doing the beach restoration in long branch, lots of guys out by us, huge waves. I heard some measured up to 25ft. Easy 12 to 15 feet the day of the storm for hours. Pretty awesome to watch.
I'm a hillbilly/Florida/surfer, but during the 80's I became a "7 Presidents Beach Park" in Longbranch, local¡☆! 😅 I had a great time there; solid swell, good crowd, surf shop across the street, but I didn't do winters because when it's too cold and I have to wrap myself in a wetsuit, I don't do well, the fun is over. 😮
Alright, I know there are a lot of comments so nobody will see this, but I have to. Crazy athleticism and surfing (and stones) of course, but this edit is top-notch also. Many great angles and shots. I loved in Jersey all my life, never seen the beach or water look nice, lol specially after going to the Bahamas and being on a wave runner, looking down and actually seeing the bottom, we can't even see a ft. Down. Lol
NJ can only hold so much swell. That was definitely close to the limit, with the added bonus and danger of those HEAVY barrels! Great job guys! Respect!
thanks to the surfers for encouraging us all to push our limits. also, thats exceptional video work! the music and the length of the video are perfect. the scale and framing of the video are excellent, mostly close-up with some scaled out aerial footage. and it’s really cool how some of the scenes end with foam fireworks filling the frame.

5mm ? 5mm Can’t hold in this strong wind. It has to be 6mm, which is what I used. The water is already less than 50 F.
