    The United States’ FA-18 Super Hornet and MiG-29k are two of the world’s most lethal carrier based fighter jets. We thought it would be interesting to compare these aircraft operating in two most powerful navies of the world.
    1. Performance
    The Super Hornet was first introduced in 1999. Around 608 jets have been built so far with per unit cost of $66m. Operated by crew of 2, the Aircraft’s empty weight is 32,100lb and can take-off with maximum weight of 66,000Ib. The jet is powered by 2 General Electric turbofan engines, producing 44,000 pounds of thrust combined. The aircraft can fly at top speed of Mach 1.6. With ferry range of 2,070mi, the aircraft can conduct combat operations within the radius of 449mi. The aircraft has climb rate of 748 ft/sec and can reach at maximum altitude of 50,000ft. The aircraft comes with 11 hardpoints in addition to 20mm rotary cannon.
    On the other hand, MiG-29k was first rolled out in 2010. Around 89 jets have been built so far with per unit cost of $27M. Operated by a crew of 1 or 2, the aircraft comes in at weight of 24,250lb. The jet can take-off with maximum weight of 54,013lb. The aircraft is powered by 2 turbofan engines generating 39,800 pounds of thrust combined. With the help of these engines, the jet can gain top speed of Mach 2. With ferry range of 1,864mi, the aircraft can conduct combat operations within the radius of 528mi. With climb rate of 1,083 ft/sec, the jet can reach at maximum altitude of 57,400ft. The fighter jet is fitted with 8 Hardpoints in addition to a 30mm autocannon.
    2. Maneuverability
    The most important factor in deciding a dogfight is maneuverability, the maximum rate and radius of turn. To maximize its maneuverability, the FA-18 is outfitted with leading edge extensions in addition to advanced flight control system... Whereas, MiG-29k is a super maneuverable fighter as it can outperform the super hornet in both instantaneous and sustained turns. It can execute impossible maneuvers with regular aerodynamic controls…
    3. Radar & Avionics
    FA18 is outfitted with APG-79 radar and equipped with upgraded processor resulting in increased speed and memory capacity. The radar is capable to track multiple targets from 93mi of distance… On the contrary, MIG-29K is equipped with advance radar with improved signal processing and a detection range. With the help of the radar, the aircraft can detect an object with RCS of 5m2 from range of 75mi…
    4. Firepower
    Both planes are equipped with state of the art missiles capable of shooting each other. FA-18 has 11 weapon stations, which include two additional wing store stations and supports a full range of armaments including AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-120 air to air missiles…On the other hand, MIG is armed with 30mm autocannon with 150 rounds of ammunition. The aircraft is outfitted with 8 external hardpoints. The jet can carry two R-27 air-to-air medium range missiles, 6 R-73 and R-60 air-to-air short range missiles…
    The detailed conclusion inside the video.

    Thank you for adding at the end that it would depend on the pilot's flying skills because you can't go by specifications of an aircraft. I remember reading about Chuck Yeager when he was summoned to test fly and go over a North Korean Mig-15 that was captured after the pilot defected with it. First, Yeager flew an F-86 against it and was able to outfly it in a simulated dogfight, getting on its tail for what would've been a shoot down in real life. Next, Yeager switched and flew the Mig and outflew the F-86 and was able to get on its tail. And what was the reason the Top Gun school was formed in 1969?

    The AOA of the hornet and fulcrum isn’t too different. Both have large leading edge root extensions that generate large vortices over the wings to increase lift particularly in instantaneous turn rates and high angles of attack.

    • @yujinhikita5611
      @yujinhikita5611 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that is true however in a dog fight guns only, the mig 29 has the advantage by the fact they its high thrust and low weight. that enables it to turn fight the F/A18 much better. that is if you ever get in a dog fight without missiles and both be trained equally. like that's ever gonna happen.

    • @adamwee382
      @adamwee382 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think the Mig 29 has the same aoa as the hornet. If i'm not mistaken the mig has a 26 degree AoA limiter where as the hornet isn't AoA limited. The mig can of course bypass the flight control system and it's AoA limit but it's supposedly slugging once it gets slow where as the hornet is very nimble at slow speeds. The Mig does have pretty nose authority without the cobra button, but it's more of a point defense interceptor and rate fighter.
      They are close enough within visual range that it's probably going to come down to the better pilot or particular circumstances at the merge, but outside of visual range the super hornet has a major advantage with it's superior aesa radar.

      @@yujinhikita5611 That's assuming the Hornet pilot lets himself get duped into a rate fight. The Mig has a major disadvantage in that can't carry much fuel. If he's going to rate fight the hornet he's going to be sitting in full burner which will mean he is on the clock.

    I think they are both extremely dangerous with the Russian possibly having the advantage during the dog fight but, the mission is to take each other out and the one who can see the opponents first, will have the first opportunity to accomplish the mission.
    As principle, to accomplish the objectives, one must keep focused of the objetcs therefore (keep eyes on the ball) if one of the pilots cannot see the object or losses sight of it, he is less likely to accomplish such objectives.
    F/A-18 Super hornet is most likely to accomplish it one on one.

    The hornet can also be piloted by one or two depending upon whether you get an E model VS an F or E/A-18G, The speed is super hornet is Mach 1.8 not 1.6. We send f-18s over to Germany or out to Malaysia where they have faced off against different variance of the MIG-29, The only MIG-29‘s that are “Super Maneuverable” are the MIG-29 OVT, or is successor the MIG-35.. In close in 2 circle engagement at low level The F-18 is virtually unbeatable in bfm. Due to the fact the big 29 does not have a whole lot of external hard points it usually does not carry external fuel baring maybe a centerline tank, the Klimov RD-33 is notorious for burning off excessive amounts of fuel at low altitudes which usually results and losses for the fulcrum, The Fulkum is good for 30 minute short range engagement beyond that you need to have air to air refueling capability because his legs get greatly diminished when it uses wet thrust especially at Lowells. I’m not gonna take away from the fact that the fulcrum is a highly maneuverable but not super maneuverable aircraft it is parallel to the F 18 and the F-16 in more than number of ways. I’d say thrust weight ratio wise and capability wise it’s more like into the F-16 that is the F-18 as far as comparability. Any high altitude one circle fight within visual range The MIG-29 has an advantage, it has a slightly bitter turn radius then the Super Hornet, and they both virtually have the same capability when it comes to off boresight shots with their helmet mounted queuing system. The F/A-18 E or F Super Hornet is just as maneuverable as The fulcrum is only pulls off most of it’s best maneuvers down at a lower altitude than the Fulcrum does. In fact there is a demonstration with a super hornet flown by Boeing‘s test pilot Ricardo Treavon boasting a complement of 10 AIM-120D’s Scorpions (8 under the wings and attached to the fuselage) and 2 AIM-9X Sidewinders on the wing tips, in fact during that demonstration he did put your Pugachev's cobra. I’ll find the video attach it and show it. So anyway not to take away from the fulcrum being a sturdy fighter, but the super hornet is a lot better than what you give it credit for in this video.
