Lots of excitement as the wedding party boards the yacht. Laura tries to explain the night of the rape, but Scotty tells her it's David Hamilton all over again. He storms out to kill Luke. Jeff is bummed about Heather. Jeff, Anne & the Hardy's discuss Franks generosity. Lee & Gail reflect on Laura and Scotty's first year of marriage. Laura tries to call Luke. Scotty breaks down Luke's door, but Luke's not inside.

With all the chaos bs going on nowadays and all the trash on tv. You know it's bad when I have to go back 40-years to watch Luke and Laura again. Best couple on Daytime soaps!
Kin Shriner was way under rated as an actor in this role. Geary gets all the glory, but Shriner should have a few day time Emmys himself.
This is where I came in! I taught school, Luke and Laura were the big rage. Summer vacation started and I began watching GH. When I had to go back to school I bought a VCR. They weren’t cheap in those days. Setting the timer you could record ONE thing on the station your TV was set on.
I came home that first day, rewound that tape and there it was! I never regretted the money. It saved my sanity!
I was about 10 when i got hooked on general hospital in 1980. But only could fully enjoy it in summer because i missed 20 minutes of

I said it before, I'll say it again. Kin Shriner did one of the best transformations of a character that I ever seen in soap opera history.
Yes and it all made so much sense story wise. Both Luke and Laura betrayed him. And remember when he came back sporting that beard and caught the bouquet at the wedding? That was the most epic shocking moment in soap history. And then later his pairing with Heather Webber was unmatched. Kin Shriner and Robin Mattson were the best villain couple ever! I find it sad that GH today doesnt hook them up again and put them in story. They have such a rich history and they're still great actors.
Matched only by Luke, himself.

Genie Francis was cast perfectly as the daughter of Denise Alexander’s character.
Yes, they look alike, not in a super obvious way but if you look at the overall cast of their faces... they look alike. They also sound A LOT alike.

This is when Scotty Baldwin turned from good guy to villain. And who can blame him? His wife, who he truly loved, betrayed him and fell in love with her rapist.

Kin Shriner should have one an Emmy for this scene with Genie Francis. And later for his scene with Gail Ramsey aka Susan Moore. I think he was underrated in his Heyday as a soap opera villian.

Yes, he should have. Laura too. And his marriage to Susan... HER acting was absolutely outstanding when she became vengeful... now SHE was really overlooked too. So many of the best were. Gail's acting in the weeks before her shooting was riveting and phenomenal.
I love this episode. One of the rare occasions when the show was shot on location.
Well back in the 80s soaps across the board had bigger budgets and could do more locations. When Gloria Monty came to GH in 1977 ABC gave her the budget she wanted and she shot some of the best remote location scenes in the history of the genre. This was my next favorite next to the Diana Taylor Murder mystery remote and the grand daddy of them all The Voyage of the Ice Princess in 1981.
I can't watch this without a lot of crying. The acting was so brilliantly executed and something like this happened to me.

This was before Luke was "propped". Never loosing and winning every battle ruining the character, bleh!
Yes! That was one of the best choreographed fights scenes I had ever seen on a soap. It all looked real and even the sound effects for the punches was right on cue lol. And whats even better is that it appears that both Kin Shriner and Tony Geary did their own stunts. Well I dont know about when Luke fell into river. Perhaps that was a stunt man. But the editing was seamless so I cant tell lol.
Remember Luke didn’t feel like living. He didn’t want to marry Jennifer and Frank would kill him. He realized it was a way out. He stops fighting back.
OMG I've been watching gh since I was 12 year's old... OMG that's been almost 44 year's now ! And I remember watching this episode like it was yesterday. Well almost lol. I had my first child 3 weeks after this episode.. Wow sure does stir up the memories and not only gh but, everything that was going on at that time. I've always loved gh among others but 8 have to admit the show was so much better back then ! I will always watch my gh ! But boy it was just super back then ! Thanks so much for uploading these ! It's great to be able to watch them again thanks to people like you ! Hope you have a beautiful weekend.

I still remember seeing this episode with my sisters. I was 13 years old and I had commented to both of them how I thought Genie Francis was such a good actress because she was crying for real. I've been a fan of hers ever since.
I was 15 when this aired and I watched Genie grow from her first day on GH when she was only 14 herself. I still think her best ever scenes were when Laura killed David, the scene where Jessie Brewer took off her clothes at GH after the rape and Jessie told Laura that though she had been raped no one could touch her soul. And then years later where Laura had to identify Lucky's burned body after he was presumed dead in the fire. To this day I still find it sad that Genie has only won only 1 Emmy award in all her years on daytime.
gargoyle have won just as many Awards as TG.... As a matter of fact many more we all have to remember GF was so much younger then he. GF did help make GH for what it once was back then.... Trust me, on L&L fan channels like susseq, it's clear that for many L&L fans Scott is "the bad guy". Laura wasn't having a physical affair with Luke after the rape, but she WAS having an emotional affair with Luke and Scott was right to accuse her of having an affair.
Before the letter Scott was pretty naive person and lawyer (esp working for Frank Smith). The letter propelled him into "the real world" and he became much more interesting esp when he returned to PC in the late 80's!
The final day of "good Scotty".. from hereon out he becomes a sketchy skeevy near villain.
The actor who plays Frank Smith, is the same bad soap actor in Tootsie.

Skipped school to watch Luke back then! I remember this episode gave me HIGH anxiety. As an 10th, 11th, and 12th grader, I made sure my Gerry curl looked like Luke's so I could be the black Luke Spencer 😄Here I am watching this as a 55 year old (balding) nut case😄 God bless!

Aired Friday, July 11, 1980 on ABC daytime. When this show was aired, it was the last day of our second complete week of five of summer school, the non-SLDC version.
I watched this episode in July 1980 right before a family trip to Bermuda when I was a teenager. While there, I learned that Bermuda was one week behind on GH episodes because they relied on weekly transports of tapes. When I returned to the US, I had to ask my friends what happened next in order to catch up on L&L being on the run.

Unfortunately they both Peter Hansen and Susan Brown have passed on now. But they both lived very long and full lives. And man Peter Hansen was one of the most handsome older men in soaps period. No one could rock grew hair like that guy and what a fabulous actor.

Amazing ….I had a whole different perspective on this story at 14 than I do now at 57…..Thank God! ( it’d be scary to still be thinking like a 14 year old! 🤣)…I find Laura so annoying and immature now! Though still amazed at what great actors Genie Francis and Tony Geary were! And how different General Hospital is now.

Wow I didn't realize that the Frank Smith from back then was so old, the one from 1994 seems younger or the same age which is absurd considering he spent 13 years in prison.

They didn't confront the incredible conundrum that Gloria Monty wrote them into (turning a rapist into a hero and a wronged husband into a villian) until the Lucky storyline.

I know the old GH episodes were taped over by ABC . . . so what are these clips with the numbers running in the corner? Are there more out there that we haven't seen? I hope one day I will be able to see GH again from 1979 thru 1981 . . . somehow. Somebody uploaded a ton of GH from 1980 but it's in German so I can't understand what they're saying. It's hard to read lips.

I have to agree with that.
It's crazy to think how popular this show got over Luke and Laura and 30 million people watching their wedding. I watched GH off and on during this time and I don't remember any of this. I was more of a Leslie, Monica, and Rich love triangle fan that must have happened already in the late 70's, and then Alan Quartermaine came into the picture.
I can't be the only one that actually felt bad for Jennifer, right?
Roy Dillucca was the most intense character ever on the show.
What's so sad is that if Laura could tell him the truth about Frank Smith, Scott may have understood her reasons for doing what she did. Of course, then she and Luke wouldn't have been......so there.

It's become a low budget show, with chessey actors who can't act and characters that not even a child would care about..Gloria Monty most be rolling in her grave

No scotty wasn't the bad guy but he was the boring guy in Laura life that's why she was more into Luke and of course she was young but when they went on the run she grew up a lot thanks to Luke.
Scotty was a jerkoff to Laura. He wanted total control of her right down to where she worked. He wanted her to go to group therapy after the rape because he felt it was best. He was self centered and selfish, his career came first. The rape notwithstanding, Luke had much more respect for Laura than Scotty ever did.

The character of Luke was not the same age as Anthony Geary's age. He was supposed to be a bit younger. I most certainly don't like everything about Luke, not a diehard Luke fan; however - unless someone has watched every nuance from the beginning, (I started watching in 1978) it is unfair to say she was "to blame" for marrying Scotty, or that she should have been hit brutally by Scotty. Some of L & L's "love scenes" creep me out also, I understand; the real "magic" seems to be in both of the actor's natural chemistry which proved to be fascinating to many viewers. The writer's, esp. producer Gloria Monty realized the gold mine within this acting pairing, and backpeddled storylines, in order to pursue this potential. They were spellbinding to watch at times. minus certain love scenes.
I believe that is exactly it. The viewers saw the magic between the actors Genie Francis and Anthony Geary and they wanted them together. The fact that the story line started out with the intention of Luke being killed off and then they had to take the story line in another direction made it necessary to try and "undo" the rape. The viewers that did want them together, of which I am one, wanted them together not BECAUSE of the rape but because BEFORE the rape GF and TG were magical together. Luke and Laura are amazing together and how differently things would have turned out for GH if TPTB hadn't agreed that GF and TG/ Luke and Laura needed to be a couple..
so true! we would have really missed out on some amazing acting, and sheer magic at times..
...........and GH likely wouldn't have gained the ratings and immese popularity it did because of the pairing of these two phenomenal actors.
Boy that's about as much dancing out of responsibility as Gloria Monty did with this story. The facts are that Tony Geary is 14 years older than Genie Francis. In 1979 when those rape scenes aired Genie was only 17 years old. And Gloria Monty was so desperate to put Tony and Genie together that she wanted the story rewritten to sort of absolve Luke of responsibility and to redeem him. The headwriter at the time Emmy Award Winning Douglas Marland wanted no part of this rewrite, so he ended up quitting the show and going on to Guiding Light and As the World Turns ( where he continued to win emmys btw). Gloria Monty then hired Pat Falken Smith. Luke was originally slated to die in the assassination attempt on Mitch Williams. But since Asher Brauner ( Roy) wanted out to star in a crime drama pilot on ABC, Roy took Luke's place and was killed off. Gloria then had Laura cover up the rape lying that it happened in the park and she couldnt remember seeing the man's face. She then began an inappropriate emotional relationship with Luke. The whole thing though extremely entertaining much due to the great chemistry between Tony and Genie really did a disservice to anyone in the audience who had been a victim of "Acquaintance Rape." Even certain members of the GH cast were against it. John Beridino ( Steve Hardy), Susan Brown ( Gail) and Brooke Bundy ( Diana) were all pretty vocal about their disdain for the story. Brooke admitted in an interview to confronting Gloria Monty about it. Gloria and Brooke had been friends for a while. But Brooke said Gloria just responded "Well that's what's happening." Perhaps the most disturbing social consequence of this story was the fact that when Tony Geary had personal appearances young girls could be heard screaming "Rape me Luke!" That's just wrong on so many levels. All that being said unfortunately I accepted the story along with the majority of the audience . But I was only 15 when this story aired. As a middle aged man now I realize that despite the entertainment value it sent a very irresponsible and destructive message about Acquaintance Rape. SMH

I thought it was weird how tbey turned a rapist into a hero. Still till this day doesn't make sense. Her running off with luke didnt make sense. If scotty would've hit her it would've made more sense.

Just for some background on the wonderful actors of GH. The actor, Frank Smith, played by George Gaynes was born in Finland and raised in France, England, and Switzerland. He spoke 5 languages. He is remembered in the movies Tootsie and The police Academies. He has a very deep and interesting Wiki page. He died in 2016 in North Bend Washington, which was the setting for the TV series Twin Peaks which features Mount Si. ......
The Frank Smith from 1994 appeared to be younger.
He was also on Punky Brewster.
