I am an actor and content creator with Hollywood credits including roles on Lucifer (Netflix), Starlight Christmas (Hallmark), JT Leroy (Universal Studios), etc. In this channel, I offer insight to Kpop performances using my 10+ years of training in dance, acting, singing and overall performance. In dance, my forte are contemporary and musicals and have done most of my performances in theatre. The red haired guy messing up the footwork is Chanyeol. I’d say he’s the weakest when it comes to dancing in the group but comparatively he’s come a long way since his debut. But his strengths lie elsewhere. He’s a very gifted musician and very talented music producer and has done a bit of acting in the side as well.
Rather than his height (cuz sehun and kai are also almost the same height) I think it's the bone structure of his legs. And well you know to a certain extent it does depend on the innate talent when it comes to dancing haha. He really does try his hardest though and has definitely improved since their debut

I understand you trying to find words to express yourself in a way for us to understand what you mean, but I want to tell you that you don't need to worry with us being mad with what you said. Chanyeol is just to tall. Jeff once said that if youre tall, it is harder to dance. Thats why he hit those step differently^^.

as a performer, I think "monster" has the most viewed MV because of its amazing way of storytelling. it's not just the song itself but the acting and cinematography (lights, scene transitions, ambiance) lifts-up the whole mood. isn't it crazy how it's already 4 years old but still radiate chills?!

All EXO members except Chen acts in dramas and movies. Chen acted once in a musical The Heights. One of the member, D.O.(Main Vocal) is one of the most acclaimed idol actor in Korea and received many awards in acting.
The red haired one is Chanyeol, he's the main rapper and a vocalist. His weakest link is dancing. That's why he's so happy in Obsession, because he was the center at the start for once. He was the center because he's the only one who can do the rising part. He said his body is kind of special, He can't do what other members can but he can do what other members can't. Lol... He's just one precious giant.

Here is some information that might help you to understand the choreography for "Monster" better. All the pieces of the choreography were designed to help tell a story. So if you know what you are looking for you will see that each move is done for a very specific reason.
If you follow EXO, then you know that the whole concept of the group is that they are supposed to be aliens who are from Planet Exo, and they were sent to Earth on a mission. Each of the members of EXO have a superpower that is unique to them and almost everything that EXO is involved in is part of their storyline and concept. In "Monster" the choreography has been designed to tell their story and it uses elements of their dance to represent several of the members using their powers.
D.O. has the power of earth (dirt) which gives him super strength, so during his part in the song and choreography you will see that he waves his hands and the other members are pushed away from him or pulled toward him. Xiumin has the power to control snow/ice/frost, so during one part of the choreography you will see that each of the members pause as if frozen as he moves in front of them. Sehun has the power to control wind, so during his parts, you will see the other members shuffle around him as if they are creating a windstorm. And the part where they are sitting on the ground is supposed to represent a sundial, EXO gets their power from the eclipse and their powers are affected by planetary and solar phenomenon, so the sundial is meant to represent the passing of time and their connection to the sun.
Also if you notice, at the end when they say "creepin', creepin', creeping," the dance move they are doing is called The Creep, from the iconic 1990s American girl group TLC, which was created for TLC's song "Creep."
The choreography for "Monster" is one of the best examples of how EXO continues their concept and story in everything they do, including in their choreography. Everything, down to the most minute detail, is expertly thought out and planned to always stick to their concept and story.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeo) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation
(Kai in Korean means door or gateway, so his stage name is supposed to foreshadow his role within EXO's storyline.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group)
The Chinese members who, eventually, leave the group:
🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon
💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind)
⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. His power was the ability to control time

About the acting thing: SM wants their idols to be like an all-rounder: Definitely perfect looks, and singing capability. Their idols have to be good dancer, singer and models at the end to finally debut then.
They really work hard on these points, but they always encourage and let them take lessons in their trainees days for acting.

D.O is actually really praised for his skilld in acting.
Kai got some works and is getting better
Chanyeol acted in a kdrama and a Chinese movie
Xiumin was also in some dramas
Lay has a big acting career like D.O, but in China
Baekhyun was in a kdrama that is really good call Moon Lovers
Suho was also in some dramas
Chen is the one that not really act, I think the only thing he made as an actor was on EXO webdrama and I think some musicals as well (I can be wrong)
Sehun is getting more and more works as an actor witch is great

Suho is also quite famous in Korea for acting in big musicals, some in lead parts. I think after DO, Suho's the most prolific actor in EXO.

ps. chanyeol himself saying that he is not so good in dancing but he is improve right now and this is during monster era. so its a lot of different now as you can see from obsession dance pratice.

Lay Zhang is one of the main dancers with kai, they’re dancing together at the center of the last chorus. He’s the one wearing the colored jacket, but he hasn’t been really active with exo bc he’s been working on his solo stuff (which i recommend 🥺) I miss him with the guys.

Gosh! Your attention to the smallest details is amazing. You give me a new perspective on their choreography. Synchronization is what drew me to EXO. I remember the June Taylor Dancers on variety shows in the 50’s, 60’s, and was just mesmerized by how in sync they were.
All of the members have done some acting. One year, DO was named as the best Kpop actor. They do seem very natural at it.
I'm glad that you also appreciate their acting on this video. As of the recent year, each member have, on their own, starred in either movies, dramas, and musicals.

While I was never a professional performer, but my few years of dancing really has me agreeing with you on synchronisation. It really is satisfying when so many people coordinate their steps to each other and the music. Having done some of it myself, I'm a complete sucker for synchronisation, variations and transitions; they make my little dancer heart beat fast.

He really never give his all in dance practices even in live performances lol! So we understand. :) He can dance pretty well but his forte is singing so I think he's focusing more on that.

I can assure you, you're not the only one who is obsessed with synchronization... synchronization is literally the thing which got me into kpop. I saw a bts dance and i'm not a dancer which is why i was shook about how people can be this synchronized while dancing!!

The song itself is actually about obsessed love. The description on the mv used to say that, at least. I haven't looked at the description recently. The music video's meaning is rebellion.

As a fan, and a multifandom K-pop fan at that, I've come to enjoy guessing which lesser synchronize bits of these dances you would point out and seeing what parts you catch that I don't. It's amusing, especially as a 2nd generation fan who comes from a time where synchronization was very much so not incorporated, let alone focused on. Formations were more of the trend back then, which is what I was use to expecting from these groups, so I was both overwhelmed and overjoyed when they started pairing the two attributes together. Of course it's a lot of extra work for all these groups alongside learning the choreography individually, perfecting it as a group, and what have you, so I was equally as worried about the longterm effects of that extra mental/physical stress and the inevitable raise in expectation from fans, but it was a an asestetically pleasing change. Especially with groups like BTS and Seventeen using such skills as beautifully planned theatrics so to speak. Anyway, as an EXO-L I just want to say thanks for the reaction! The eloquent commentary in contrast to the very fair constructive criticism often keeps me coming back. I rarely find myself disagreeing. Keep up the good work! 👌🏽👍🏽
