Becoming a pilot has always been my dream but as you said: shit's expensive yo. So instead of blindly enlisting in a flight academy and piling up the debt I went for my secondary education of choice: Computer Science. I now have a job that pays enough for me to be able to follow a pilot training program and live comfortably. I started with PPL (SEPL) and I'm just going to work my way up from here (IFR, ME, CFI, ...). And we'll just see where we end up. I'm also building contacts within the aviation community through my flight school and instructors (networking is important!) so who knows right? maybe one day a job offer might just come up. Best case: I find a job with an airline company and become a pilot! worst case: I keep my current, well paying job and will be able to fly as a hobby. Which is a win-win in my book :D Even though it might take years, I'm not in a hurry.
Gosh Reece, you're so dramatic. No one said it's easy but it isn't impossible either. Guess what, you'll need a degree to show that you got knowledge in the area you want to work in. It seems like you are still living in the 80s where you didn't need a degree but just experience. There is only one thing i agree with and that is that you will not find a job in a commercial airline after just finishing flight school for 50k.
Amazing channel Captain. I am finishing my fATPL and I am looking forward to send application. I am watching every single video of yours in order to get prepared. It's very pleasant hearing you and your videos are very formative for me. BTW: I've just purchased your app and it's worth every single cent! Keep on publishing! A big hug
Luv all your podcasts! I am addicted to learning about airplanes & being a pilot ever since I visited Kitty Hawk , NC . & Visited the Wright Brother's museum. Keep up the great job.
Excellent Explanations Mentour Pilot! The Purpose is to explain how something works or why something happens in a pretty clear way to explaining. You do.
Hi Mentour Pilot, I do not understand why you have been hesitating to talk about this. I am a trained economist and would argue it is a rather important info. I know that a lot of people are reluctant to talk about pay but it is often another important factor (not the most important) when it comes to career choice. I thank you for finally revealing some information. After all pilots sure do not need to be ashamed to make to little or way to much. The information I have from the german market is 60k for starters, around 100k middle career and up to 300 for senior captains at Lufthansa. That does give a rough idea what one can expect. So thank you for your view on this which is confirming the data I have. I thought about going for it but think that I would not like to have different shifts as I like a constant sleep rithm. Thanks for the vid and good flight !!!
One simple reason is that your company will not like you talking about figures out in the public, or even among colleagues. Some companies might even have that written in the appointment letter. I'm not in the airlines industry, but at least that's how it is in my industry.
Thanks for making all your videos especially on topics around the life of a pilot. This has helped me to make an informed decision on pursuing a career as an aviator!
Thank you for a very gutsy presentation on a very sensitive, but necessary topic in these turbulent times within the airline industry. I agree with you; this is necessary information that should not be presented, or taken lightly. Well done!
Hey Captain!! Your videos are very helpful and actually make me realize what I need to look out for in the industry. Thanks a lot! Currently a CPL student hehe
Thank you for this new video and thank you for the time you take to inform people on all of those topics. Keep up the good work ! PS : shared your channel on all aviation Facebook groups that I'm in.
metour pilot thanks so much for your tutors I enjoy your videos am really on my OJT as a flight dispatcher with an airline in Nigeria but am interested to do a CPL in the future. Thanks I learn a lot in your videos.
many pilots say that pilot salary isn't enough and they have a side business/job. I feel that it also depends from company to company. Yet, I wanted to ask that is the salary given by good companies sufficient?
Shreya K major airlines give sufficient pay for first officers. Regionals in America are not great and many times are not sufficient at an average of about $22 500. However in Canada they earn around $40 000 to $45 000 with $5 000 to $10 000 diems.
Lets be straight, If you don't love aviation You shouldn't work in it. You need to love the aviation. Like you said it has alot of + and - stuff. Its expensive and it will apart you from your family. Great explication Captain.
These are great videos! Being a North american pilot student I see North American airlines operate quite different. Just from what I have heard from older pilots in the industry that work in Canada and the USA. The hiring seems slightly different as well. Still good indication of what one can expect
In Australia someone you are paying as a permanent employee say $10 would be costing you close to $15, so a contractors total should be about half as much again as an employee just to be even. (annual leave, sick leave, long service leave, workers compensation, superannuation and payroll tax) As for the complexity, get a good accountant (contadores publicos)
Hey man quick question. I was going to buy x-plane as my first flight simulator. I am an instrument rated helicopter pilot looking to switch to airplanes soon. Is this flight simulator worth the money?
I love aviation and would love to fly commercial and am actually going to private pilots training at my high school. I just have 3 questions: -Is the pay comfortable enough to pay off training costs in the first couple years? -Would you choose a different job if you could (how high are you in the pilot heirarchy)? -Is it hard to have a spouse with this job and spend time with them? Thanks! Love your vids
I think you can never say for sure since it depends on what airline and what rank. Usually the bigger the airline means more money since the airline has lots of income making it easy to pay the pilots for a decent amount of money for what rank they are.
Just a quick question in regard to the training aspect of your video: dont some of those training companies partner with airlines through cadet programs to provide employment after training is completed? I know you'd still need to do the bond/mortgage of however much it costs to be trained.
Hey Mentour, i have a few questions I'm still unsure how pilots can take holidays off how can thay? Also, as far as tax goes, wouldn't it be the same as maritime? I always thought that it would be based on where the airliner was originally based in. Also, how does a pilot climb the ranks? Starting off with a small airliner and progressing to a very large airliner as a captain sure must be difficult, how would some of us compete to get the most qualified?? I'm in the process of doing my research on flight schools that don't take advantage on my dream of flying, and also won't prolong my training in a bid to milk me of money. It won't be easy, plus I'm based in the uk, so it's worse. How can I compare flight schools based on reputation for a specific airline? These are just questions I have from watching 10 of ur video tips so far. Thanks m8
hey I've read that after getting your licenses and getting a bachelor's degree you were ready to be a pilot but I also heard you and other comments talking about going to academies or training something like that do you have a video on this or something like that?
I wish I could just sit and talk with you so many questions. About the industry from regional major and over seas aviation. Routes to take to get the Career. Does it ever get boring and monotonous? Why did you become a pilot?
Great video which has answers of my questions just ten days before dlr1 exam :) Thank you so much and if you have any advises for dlr training then it will be appreciated. i want to have this job not beacuse of money by the way :)
@mentourpilot I have recently got a job with Ryanair and I am worried about the wet drills, as I have phobia of deep water. Im not a strong swimmer but can do the 25m unaided with no problems, but threading water to put the life jacket on is a problem, specially if I look down. How bad is it?
hello. I like these videos there not the best for me but I love the videos. I attend University of North Dakota to become a pilot. what airline do you work for? which European country do you live in? I plan to work for a Regional Airline called Go Jet!!!
This was really helpful and encouraging. i'm very excited towards this career, i didn't know what i was going to do with my life but after watching your videos i'm getting very ambitious. what do you think about entering an ATP school and getting a loan for my completion of courses? thanks again
What do you think about expensive flight schools but with airline placement? (ex: ctc aviation). On one hand they require a loan, on other hand you have the guarantee to find a job
Hello Mentour, Where's My Airport Diagram ? Hahahahahaha Joke ! No Worries I know you are Busy. Do you Still remember My Comment Last Month, But you have a Lots of Video that Makes Everything a Gift For me Hahaha Well Advance Merry Christmas. !!! ☆☆☆ :) !
Hello i really like your work and my dream os becoming a pilot. It would be great if i could get more information about you for eg:the airline you work for and where you live etc. And please give some guidelines on how to start pilot training and how much does it cost and also the loans which are given aswell, how does all of it work. I would be really gratefull if i could get answered:)
In my country pilot training costs ''only'' 13 500 euros however it's the only education thing that costs. University is free here in Finland. I would be able to pay for that somehow and I think I have the needs to become a pilot. It's just pretty risky and my parents want me to have steady income and a job or something... With my grades I could basically become anything so it's really hard for me to decide but being a pilot for a living would be nice.
I think it depends which country you are trying to fly for. For example, in the US the major airlines will not hire you without a 4 year college degree, but (if I am not mistaken,) in most European countries it is not a requirement. Do research on what airlines you want to work for or in what country.
That's not always the case though. In many countries there are banks that have special "pilot programs" for student pilots. After you get your first job you just start paying off in little blocks which is perfectly doable. It is also possible to only loan a part of the total training cost and pay the other half by yourself (own job, parents, etc... for example). I've also seen that in some countries the state can choose students to sponsor them which means their entire journey to the cockpit is... free! It's not everywhere and you will have to pass tests where they choose a couple of students but I've met fellow pilots in Sweden for example who graduated and didn't pay anything for their training. Also to answer his first question if you can go to a training right after high school the answer is yes. It can be an extra plus on your CV if you have a degree but then again you payed extra, waited another couple of years (graduating on a young age is an advantage as a pilot) but I myself came straight from high school when I started my training and I've met many others too. I think the mentality that pilots should be extremely highly educated candidates with high degrees is something from the old days, doesn't matter how much smarter or many degrees my other colleagues have because at the end we still have the same piece of paper saying we are commercial pilots :-)
If you're an American you can become an officer in the air force and try and get a pilot slot and then serve 10 years as a pilot and then switch to airlines afterwards. Airlines love hiring former military cargo pilots. The only issue is getting into air force pilot training is competitive and requires a college degree. I am aiming for a pilot slot and am about to go to college, but I'll have an "easier" time getting one because I am going for a technical major and am good at school and have high standardized test scores. For others it is more difficult. You can even get scholarships from the air force to help pay for college, but if you accept one you're committed to serving at least 4 years even if you don't get a pilot slot. However, if you work hard enough, most routes will work. Military or civilian, college or no college, with hard work it will work.
Hey , I stay in India and like your channel a lot . I have two Questions , First What are some good schools to learn to become a pilot(India/Abroad). Second , In my country the course is very expensive so i have plans of working for a few years and then plan on becoming a pilot , Are there any age restrictions for course ? Cheers !
Hey Mentour Pilot! I reside in Eastern United States and I will admit schools here are very expensive, including an accelerated program named ATP that I'm interested in. Also, I have many people in my life telling 50/50 about this career (pros/cons). Things ranging from the fact that the industry is in dire need of pilots and large bonuses, and other statements saying that to get to the comfortable salary will probably take 10-15 years. Can I email you?....
hi i am considering being a pilot i have heard that finding a job is really hard like most pilots after aviation school dont get jobs for 2 to 3 years. is that true?
I have hundreds of questions for you, and I will ask you all of them in time. For now I have one that is huge for me and will help me loads towards my own goal of becoming a pilot. So here we go :) I know that there are tests that I have to go trough to be accepted into an airline/flight school (not talking about tests to see if I'm crazy...). What can I do to better my self and/or prepare for these in the best possible way? I would appreciate it if you could do a video about it. It would help me a lot! Best regards for Norway :)
***** Hey man. Let me tell you this I did my test just recently and I tought to be honest that I was not going to make it because I could not really study for all of it except math. Now to train your English I would highly recommend you to read a english book, doesn't has to be a long one. Next, I would recommend you to read an article on the newspaper and try to summarise it in your own words as if you are telling it towards someone. Secondly for the physics I taught I would not make it because I didn't had the proper schoolbooks. At my school I had to give back my schoolbooks at the end, every year. So I started to look up on the internet and a lot of People recommended each other Schaums Outline Physics Course. I taught I should buy it but I could not find it and it would have taken me to long to get that book overseas. So I gathered all the info I could fine (they give you the subjects that you have to know for the exam) and studied. But I do recommend you to get a proper book, or just hire a reacher for couple of hours to tell you everything about those subjects and provide you with the descent notes. Thirdly, there are some hand and eye coordination excercices. You can't train for that BUT if you play playstation or a computer games it does help you in a way. Because gamers can handle more things by hand and eye coordination then the average person, that's scientificly proven!! The test you will do is that you will have to keep a small dott between two lines while they are moving and making slightly curves. Another test is to keep a blue ball between two lines, you control that with your hands. At the same time you have to keep a red ball between the lines with your feet. These two balls Always keep moving, they don't stop, you just need to hold them as best and as close as you can between those lines. Forthly, there is a general test that tests your knowledge about everything. They ask questions like : What would brake first if you would use a rudder made oout of 1) Wood 2) Metal 3) Plastic 4) Rubber 5) Glass? Obviously the glass would have been broken first because of the less flexibility it has. Another question, how does it come that a hotballoon rises? It"s called convection, convection is that hot air rises and cooler air falls down. A person opens the gass that lets fire come out and heat the giant balloon, because the temperature in the balloon is hotter then the temperature outside the balloon, the balloon adventually rises. These are very basic questions so don't panic. Just do you research and ofcourse learn a bit AND the most important thing, Trust and Believe in yourself! You also get some basic mathematical question like making fast calculation by heart. For example 145X126 or 15487+2546244 I passed for everything more then the average student except for a small subject and that was coordination. To this day I still don't know what I did wrong because they don't show you your faults. It was probably a misscomprehension. The director of the school said that my points were very good so I could begin For me it wasn't the test that was difficult, because I studied and prepared as hard and as good as I can. The banks didn't gave me the money that I needed to start my program and from that day on I am still trying to get the money. They just don't let le lend the money even if I did pass for the exam. Sometimes life is hard but we have to be harder, so don't give up, don't be afraid of the challenges up a head. I hope that I have helped you Th
+Mentour Pilot Hey Mentour Pilot, you're videos are very clear, concise and informative. I really couldn't have thought of all those important things that we have to consider without watching your videos. My dream is to be an airline pilot and I am going to apply to flight school in a year or two hopefully. I also have few questions about the pilot selection tests. 1. What is the difference between psychometric test and aptitude test (I mean are they both the same thing that are used interchangeably)? 2. Are the aptitude tests used in cadet pilot selection in flight schools the same as the ones that are used when applying for a regular job e.g warehouse job, supermarket job., or are the aptitude tests focused on the pilot job? 3. If it's possible, can you please make a video explaining the different types of aptitude tests that are used in cadet selection, e.g spatial awareness, numerical reasoning etc 4. Also, what is a technical reasoning test? Thank you very much!
hi Capt! do corporate pilots makes more than airline pilots? and do you think corporate pilot has slightly better life in the industry than pilot working for an airline?
Airline pilot is better in most cases. You make more money and have more days off and job security. My corporate buddies often times don't have any set days off, they just get to be home if the airplane is not in use. On average, corporate guys make a lot less money too. Corporations can quickly change their minds on aircraft ownership too. I know several guys who have had to jump from one job to another flying corporate. Airlines can be unstable too, but not as much as corporations that can dump airplanes quickly and give up on flying all together.
Hello:) I really enjoy your videos they are very informative and interesting, I am in high school and it is my dream to one day become a commercial pilot, however, I go to an International school in the uk and they do not offer GCSE's which are required to apply for a flying school, my school offers IB and AP exams and I have emailed the flying schools but they haven't gotten back to me, if you know anything about this I would appreciate an answer very much, Thanks, CaptainH4wk
Hey i have a question If I share the cockpit with a fellow PPL pilot and we fly together to cut hour building costs do we both get PIC cause we will manage different things. Like he fly's one leg and i handle radios and visa versa?
+Nicolas Schaede sry if I sounded harsh haha, the point was to show you how important it is to not log fake flight time, since you can get into some serious trouble for doing that. :)
Hey Captain I'm new to this channel I just want to ask how much did you have to spend overall to become a pilot? And my plan is to be a pilot, but I'm hesitating if i should continue with this plan because I don't know if I will get the job in the future and I don't want to spend a lot of money in a job I'm not even sure if I will get it. I live in Canada. THANKS!
hey! I am ashu. I am in 11th grade now. I live in india and want to know that is it better to get my cpl from abroad rather than India. Is there any scholarship's for international students?
Hi If I'm a international Student and my aviation school is in USA Do i have a chance work in any of the Airline in USA After I finish my PPL CPL and ATPL
Hi captain Thanks for your videos. :) Im 21 years now Will it be better if I start my training when I'm 25 so i can save up at least half of the training fee, or should i start immediately?
I would assume it depends on how much money you'll make to save up. For most well paying jobs requiring education, if you can secure a low interest loan then it makes sense to get the education right away. But if you can make a fair bit of money doing something you don't want to do as a career to avoid paying extra interest if you get horrible interest rates then it makes sense to save up.
Sir i am an asian guy, and i would ask. Does the color of the man matters on the airline agency in the state or it affects the whole of you. I ask this because i am in 12 grade and i am deciding to choose a course that can make me grow
thanks i appreciate it, im 16 now and starting my ppl in canada so i can graduate when im 17 and start aiming for my dream job. (To fly the B787 Dreamliner)
Hi! very good video, you could someday explain you had the first flight on a 737 with your company? because you came to live in catalonia? freedom from Catalonia !! *****
Mentour pilot just asking I know to become a pilot you need a bachelor degree but what should my average marks in high school be, I have heard 75% but I don't think that true please reply, thanks!!
Becoming a pilot has always been my dream but as you said: shit's expensive yo. So instead of blindly enlisting in a flight academy and piling up the debt I went for my secondary education of choice: Computer Science.

Same as i did! :)
See that's exactly how I'm planning to pay for my training, except I chose to do Aeronautical Engineering as it's a bit more closely related. :)
Thierry Van Tillo that's a great plan. Exactly what I'm going to do. 💯👨🏽✈️✈️📚🎓🌇🛩🛫🙏🏾🛫🛩📸✅
How are things going now?

Hi MenTour. There's a LOT of very good advice there that is very useful outside the aviation industry as well as inside. Bob.
Well done!
Well done Mentour! Very applicable even in other markets 👍
Hey Captain!! Your videos are very helpful and actually make me realize what I need to look out for in the industry. Thanks a lot! Currently a CPL student hehe
With some other words : When you're dreaming, make sure to acknowledge it and remember that.
This seems to be good career/life advice. It doesn't even have to be specific to aviation.
Thank you for this new video and thank you for the time you take to inform people on all of those topics. Keep up the good work !
PS : shared your channel on all aviation Facebook groups that I'm in.
Thank you very much... Very much light shed on this issue. Thanks

awesome insight..... love the content .. learn't lots.... my question : how to find work immediately after CPLA
Got suggested this video in 2021 as i am interested in staying my pilot training
Thoughts on the ATP flight school 6 month acceleration program? 65k for the schooling, and flight instructor program while obtain 1500 fly hours.
I love aviation and would love to fly commercial and am actually going to private pilots training at my high school. I just have 3 questions:

Great video, and great channel!
Was that 4 to 5 k euros a month?
What do you think about expensive flight schools but with airline placement? (ex: ctc aviation). On one hand they require a loan, on other hand you have the guarantee to find a job
+Mentour Pilot thanks!
great to watch your videos! can you suggest any aviation academy or school in finland?
***** Thanks. And thank you for making these videos they're very informational and helpful.
+Mentour Pilot I've heard you lived in spain, i wanna ask about "Barcelona Flight School",is it good to get the flight license there? Thank you.
Do you like the job? i mean, with all the knowledge you have now, would you decide to do it again?
what is the fees to be pilot average fees in uk usa and australia??starting salary after completing pilot course??
I have a question please. Can I ask my company to keep me in a specific city base for years? I dont mind having a salary reduction
im 17.. should i start my training next yr right after high skool or should i get a degree?
Please reply to this!!!!!!! Im in the same situation but my local fliht school doesnt need a degree
I think it depends which country you are trying to fly for. For example, in the US the major airlines will not hire you without a 4 year college degree, but (if I am not mistaken,) in most European countries it is not a requirement. Do research on what airlines you want to work for or in what country.
You should get a job and start saving up. After training you'll be in debt...with a degree you'll be even more in debt.
Military or civilian, college or no college, with hard work it will work.
thank you so much!
Hey , I stay in India and like your channel a lot . I have two Questions , First What are some good schools to learn to become a pilot(India/Abroad). Second , In my country the course is very expensive so i have plans of working for a few years and then plan on becoming a pilot , Are there any age restrictions for course ?
Cheers !
Hey! What college courses do you recommend to take and to major on that will help me become an airline pilot someday. Thank you in advance!
what is the difference between CPL and ATPL
Hey Mentour Pilot! I reside in Eastern United States and I will admit schools here are very expensive, including an accelerated program named ATP that I'm interested in. Also, I have many people in my life telling 50/50 about this career (pros/cons). Things ranging from the fact that the industry is in dire need of pilots and large bonuses, and other statements saying that to get to the comfortable salary will probably take 10-15 years. Can I email you?....
Can u please tell me about Helicopter career,I am looking forward in this field.
hi
i am considering being a pilot
i have heard that finding a job is really hard
like most pilots after aviation school dont get jobs for 2 to 3 years.
is that true?
I have hundreds of questions for you, and I will ask you all of them in time. For now I have one that is huge for me and will help me loads towards my own goal of becoming a pilot. So here we go :)
I know that there are tests that I have to go trough to be accepted into an airline/flight school (not talking about tests to see if I'm crazy...).
3. If it's possible, can you please make a video explaining the different types of aptitude tests that are used in cadet selection, e.g spatial awareness, numerical reasoning etc
4. Also, what is a technical reasoning test?
Thank you very much!
hi Capt! do corporate pilots makes more than airline pilots? and do you think corporate pilot has slightly better life in the industry than pilot working for an airline?
I think corporate pilot is worst.
Ifly 777 can you give your opinion about that? Im a bit confused because i saw another pilot VLOG he said the otherwise. :)
Airlines can be unstable too, but not as much as corporations that can dump airplanes quickly and give up on flying all together.
quinnjim I see, Thank you for the insight! :)
Thank You
Hello:) I really enjoy your videos they are very informative and interesting, I am in high school and it is my dream to one day become a commercial pilot, however, I go to an International school in the uk and they do not offer GCSE's which are required to apply for a flying school, my school offers IB and AP exams and I have emailed the flying schools but they haven't gotten back to me, if you know anything about this I would appreciate an answer very much, Thanks, CaptainH4wk
Hey i have a question If I share the cockpit with a fellow PPL pilot and we fly together to cut hour building costs do we both get PIC cause we will manage different things. Like he fly's one leg and i handle radios and visa versa?
nope, there can only be one PIC at a time. don't even think about logging "fake" hours!!!
+Gabriel Peixoto that's for me to know and you to find out
+Mentour Pilot yeah thanks I figured the other guy was a bit harsh for a question but thanks
+Nicolas Schaede sry if I sounded harsh haha, the point was to show you how important it is to not log fake flight time, since you can get into some serious trouble for doing that. :)
+Gabriel Peixoto alright thanks appreciate the concern now I will know that is a no go for my our building :)
If i finish my military career as a fighter pilot , can i easily find a job as an airline pilot ?
Thanks a lot !
THANKS!
+Mentour Pilot thanks for replying! I will definitely check that out
Mentor pilot I am a student in standard 12 what should go further to become an airline pilot
hey!
+Mentour Pilot THx I'm starting my training this December I which to get a chance to flight with you
Hi captain
Thanks for your videos. :)
Im 21 years now
Will it be better if I start my training when I'm 25 so i can save up at least half of the training fee, or should i start immediately?
I would assume it depends on how much money you'll make to save up. For most well paying jobs requiring education, if you can secure a low interest loan then it makes sense to get the education right away. But if you can make a fair bit of money doing something you don't want to do as a career to avoid paying extra interest if you get horrible interest rates then it makes sense to save up.
What can you do with a CPL?
Sir i am an asian guy, and i would ask. Does the color of the man matters on the airline agency in the state or it affects the whole of you. I ask this because i am in 12 grade and i am deciding to choose a course that can make me grow
+Mentour Pilot yes sir, i mean does the ethnicity of a person affects the career or there's a big problem in getting the job
How long from getting my private licence would it take to become a airline captain?
thanks i appreciate it, im 16 now and starting my ppl in canada so i can graduate when im 17 and start aiming for my dream job.
(To fly the B787 Dreamliner)
Hi I am interested in becoming a pilot, does the salary depend on the company you work for?
As he mentioned in the video, it very much depends on the company you work for...
Hi! very good video, you could someday explain you had the first flight on a 737 with your company? because you came to live in catalonia? freedom from Catalonia !! *****
So basically if you are a pilot, you can also do another job in the meantime?
Well, based on what pilots life's are, it's not recommend.
nice video
ami me gustaria ser piloto un dia pero no se si ami me sirve para esto. siempre haciedi mi ilucion.
Tnx alot man
