  • One of the printing presses we have on display in our print shop exhibit at the museum is a Chandler & Price jobbing press that was manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio in 1902.
While many visitors, especially school children who have visited during a school program, may have seen how this press operates, not many people get to see all the steps involved in the printing process.
In this video, Howard demonstrates inking the press, operating the press, and cleaning the press after a press run. This video was filmed in segments as Howard printed our address on the back of 250 envelopes.

I spent many an hour doing just what you are doing. We used the red sealing wax on the pins though, not painters tape lol. I would imagine the tympan paper, lasts a lot longer though.

When I was ~19 to 20 years old (~42 years ago) I ran a similar press, but that had a motor. Stuff happened in between, now I'm a software engineer and have been since about 1994.

Ahhh, the familiar sound of a C&P. Mine is 1929 and run with a motor. My safety equipment is my belly. I can't reach too far or get my hand caught in the platen.

The momentum on that HUGE wheel with all of the metal to the outside edge. That thing must go for a while with little top off energy.

I wish we could see how the ink fountain on top worked.
I know they're rarely used. But it would be nice to see some close up shots of it.

5:03 What does that lever do? ~ 6:33 After cleaning it, do you give it to the customer to hold for future printing requests? If not, what do you do with the used ones? ~ 8:35 What does the fountain do?

Doesn't that round flat plate has 2 pieces and both rotate in opposite direction????? Can you please make a video on how fountain mechanisms works? What is the rollers material? It should have rubberized surface but it looks like metal surface!!!!!!!

You would have to be strong 💪 to operate that? Looks like you def need some muscles 💪 and to carry an iron board print to set in the machine …..💪

Moving machinery and hands/appendages usually don't mix. If they do at least one stops being useful.

When putting ink or adding, you put spread it wide and thin at the edge of the disk, it spreads faster and easier than spots he is applying.
