This is sweet because although he was a tough guy and used to the ruthless city he found he had a soft spot for the cute little girl despite not really wanting to show it. The moral of this little scene is even the toughest and hardened of people has a heart deep down.
Wikipedia: "After filming of Full Metal Jacket was completed, having lost nearly all the weight gained for the movie in just nine months, D'Onofrio went on to play Dawson, the owner of 'Dawson's Garage' in Adventures in Babysitting."
And probably within a year's time, as both films were released in 1987. That's a big weight change to fulfill these two roles. Vince is a disciplined pro.
I love who D'onofrio is willing to gain/lose weight or dye his hair for his work. He's so good. I also had a crush on him in this movie when it first came out and I think I was only 6! Guess my taste hasn't changed. :0)
You know what's really amazing? He was 280 pounds when he did the Gomer Pyle character and then he dropped the weight and bulked up in time to play this character.
I am surprised how much things are connected: Thor in this movie, it was directed by Columbus, Columbus directed Branagh as Lockhart in Harry Potter and Branagh is directing now Thor the movie. Branagh was in Valkyrie movie and now directing Thor: Thor and the Valkyries are part of the same world. Love those connections.
the Buick Electra Estate Wagon was a true American classic! .. I miss the big station wagons of the 1960's and '70's! .. when kids could sit in rear-facing third seats and hung out of the rear windows on the way home from Cub Scouts or baseball practice! It was a great time to be a kid before video games and computers! We actually played outside too!
My husband bought this movie for my kids a month ago. I hadn't seen it in like 20 years...when this scene came up I was like "OH MY GOD it's Vincent D'Onofrio!!! AND HE'S STILL HOT!!!" Hubby didn't like that too much haha
Thanks for the heads up. I couldn't find anything that helped me figure it out. (Then again I didn't try too hard...Heh) "Love VDO in any shape, size and form he comes in;)" I must agree whole-heartedly. *swoon*
@MrDogwalker100 He actually gained 70 lbs for the role of Pvt. Pyle in 6 months and it took 9 months to lose it. At the time, that was a world record for the most weight gained for a movie role. He beat Robert De Niro by 10 lbs in preparation for his role in Raging Bull.
I'm kinda of sorry the Thor obssessed kid didn't get to play Jane Foster or Darcy Lewis in the "Thor" movie. Or at least have D'Onofrio have a few lines or something.
@MrDogwalker100 being a fan of law and order i looked it up, he gained weight for full metal jacket but becuase he was thinner before he played him, he was able to drop it quickly
This was filmed after FMJ for which he gained 70lbs (Still a record). He lost the weight for this role in just 9 months! Amazing!!!
"Hey kid, I got one of these at home."
.....in Asgard!
This is sweet because although he was a tough guy and used to the ruthless city he found he had a soft spot for the cute little girl despite not really wanting to show it.

I wish I could get my car fixed for $50.
I watched that scene when I was nine and it's still one of my favorite movie scenes of all time.
I would have never recognized Vincent D'Onofrio in a million years! He's blond, and about 50 lbs lighter!
Its Vincent bloody D'onofrio. tall, charismatic and awesome.

THOR? THAT NAME SOUNDS LIKE ROYALTY. ARE YOU ROYALTY, PRIVATE PYLE?
This movie was released 2 DAYS after full metal jacket...he must have worked his ass off to look like that
he was angry because back then 5$ meant something
as a kid this kinda traumatized me, cities are scary places man, but my god was shue hot
He was also a giant space roach named Edwin in MIB.
This is one of best movies ever!
This was the best scene of the movie.
One of my favorite scenes from the movie, such a cute yet poignant moments. Good movie too.
after the kids left, The Mighty Thor flew off into night.
I love who D'onofrio is willing to gain/lose weight or dye his hair for his work. He's so good. I also had a crush on him in this movie when it first came out and I think I was only 6! Guess my taste hasn't changed. :0)
Granted it was for a minute (he was on his way to filming) but my heart almost exploded when he smiled back at me :D
To think 20 years later "Thor" became "Detective Robert Goren" on Law & Order:Criminal Intent.
Wow...he was gorgeous. He still is, but here....is pure perfection :D :D
You know what's really amazing? He was 280 pounds when he did the Gomer Pyle character and then he dropped the weight and bulked up in time to play this character.
And I got to meet him :D Still in shock he went through MY lane :D I LOVE BEING A CASHIER!
Love those connections.
i was 7 when this movie came out, still my fave, and dinofrio is still one of my fave actors
Exceptional performance by Vincent D'Onofrio [& Elisabeth Shue, of course ;-) ]
I love this so much
VDO is still my hero. ;)
sooooo amazing, haha my favorite part of one of my favorite movies growing up :)
Wait, he was pretty heavy for most of Full Metal Jacket. I don't remember a scene where he was close to being this thin.
Good actor though VDO....
Thor wanted a jelly donut.
I agree. I was never into bigger guys until him, and here he's freaking Apollo!
Not too shabby at all - I'd buy tickets to that gun show.
No, that's Private Pyle - literally 9 months after filming FMJ.
..and then he was d'Onofrio from Law and Order Criminal Intent ;P
LOL! I remember this films, the little girl loved Thor so much!
He was also the jacked demon dude guy in "The Cell"

First thing I ever saw him in. Can't believe how long ago that was. I just love him!!!
according to Vincent's facebook profile, it was filmed after FMJ

He's a total chameleon!
You been spreadin rumours about me kid? LOL
For being a Thor fan, Sarah seems to not know Thor's alternate persona as a doctor named Donald Blake rather than a auto mechanic named Mr. Dawson.
Wow! That is so cool. I have heard so many nice things about him. :)
Shot after Full Metal Jacket. He lost all of the weight (70 lbs) and carved himself up into Dawson at the same time. Good to see a young Vince.
I thought Mr Pruitt was going to pay for the tyre,I love this film.
@ffscantfindausername The eighties. When there were comedies adults and kids could watch together and neither would be bored or offended.
The Mighty Thor. Guardian of the Underworld parking garage.
It's NeoBaggins! I highly doubt anyone will get that reference.
Vincent made this film and "Mystic Pizza" after he made "Full Metal Jacket."
If I've ever seen a man that could be called statuesque, he would be it!
This is the smallest I've ever seen vincent
It was filmed after Full Metal Jacket. He was sexy back in the day.
thanks so much for posting this! its such a nice follow up to the vid i posted on my page. great movie
Donofrio filmed this AFTER Full Metal Jacket.
He looks like he's wearing an Edgar skin suit!
He's wearing a wig. But its still awesome. Also at the time this movie was made, Thor didn't have a secret ID.
Thanks for the heads up. I couldn't find anything that helped me figure it out. (Then again I didn't try too hard...Heh)

Who ever thought that Private Pyle from Full Metal Jacket could look like Thor.
Soooooo
After Thor was exiled from wherever the hell he was, he became a mechanic.
Hmm...
He gained a record 70 pounds for full metal jacket and apparently dropped it all by the time he was in this movie.
Cant believe this is the same guy in Full Metal jacket!
damnnnnn he looks good
I saw him at my job today. I met Law and Order and now THOR!!!

@JacobBlackLova EDGAR! i loved Vincent D'onofrio in that role!
@ArgoteMasterChief
He at least needs a cameo in the Thor flick... maybe as a mechanic XD
Yes, they were but Stanley Kubrick took about a year to finish his film.
WOWIE!!!!
GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!
tHATS D'ONOFRIO FROM LAW N ORDER-CRIMINAL INTENT?!?
I´ve downloaded this movie only because of Vincent and then saw this....
dammmmmn handsome man. even with that awful wig thing. LOL
The films were released in the same year according to IMDB (1987)
$50 for a mechanics bill, now that's a deal even for '85 or whenever this was filmed
Adventures in Babysitting.
@ArgoteMasterChief I WISH! He's all old now. I still love him, but sadly that ship has sailed.
He was pretty tasty in the early years of LO:CI. OH YESSS.
This is true. He is very versatile. :)
The very definition of Adonis.
I can't believe thats Detective Robert Goren, From Criminal Intent...
I'll bet this Thor's favorite drink is sugar. In water.
it was after he'd lost the weight for Full Metal Jacket, in answer to the poster's comment/question.
Hey kid........I got one of these at home.
Vincent D'onofrio = Thor = EPIC !
@geligniteandlilies
Haha, you must have missed the subway scene....
Dude... WTF? I didnt even remember this and I used to watch this movie as a kid.
Thats Vincent Dinofrio!!!
don't FUCK with the Lords of Hell....
Now that is an entrance
Not to shabby either. Makes him look so baby faced.
@MrDogwalker100 being a fan of law and order i looked it up, he gained weight for full metal jacket but becuase he was thinner before he played him, he was able to drop it quickly
your ancestors call it magic. you call it science .in my realm we call it a .....PARTY
since when was vincent donofrio 8 ft tall?
Dude look good. Nice built and tall
Can some one contact that guy for the Thor film 2011? :D
Ever watch Fern Gully? Zak!
@danzig73079 Shit, I did not know that he did them same year. He was fat in FMJ though, that's some fast weight shift.
Hoooolyyyy sheeeeeiiiiitttt!
