I've played a lot of video games over the years. Many with awesome soundtracks. The first thing I did once I had completed my first play through of Project Wingman was buy its soundtrack on Bandcamp. It is the only time I've bought a video game soundtrack.
Kings is just an absolute masterpiece, especially when you put it into the context in which it's played in the game. The visceral and raw emotion of being in a knife fight with an aerial opponent that's just destroyed everything, the somber tones throughout the track knowing you're fighting for a land that's been consumed in fire and war, and the inevitable culmination of one pilot falling from the sky while the other will continue to soar through the skies to rule over a throne of ashes. Its companion piece, Coronation, is just the nail in the coffin.
All throughout the track, it plays the themes that have been present throughout the game's soundtrack into Kings, and it just does it so well. I often see folks compare Project Wingman's soundtrack to Ace Combat, which is fair since PW is heavily inspired by the Ace Combat series, but the AC game soundtracks don't tell a story the way PW does.
If you get the opportunity, play Project Wingman. It will be worth your time just for listening to the soundtrack alone.

I've never heard a song so in tune with what's going on.
Crimson-1 had nuked Presidia after the war is over.
Your co-pilot has fainted in her seat.
The sky is full of unholy fire and lightning bolts.
tens-of-thousands are most likely dead because of Crimson-1s grudge against you.
*you must kill Crimson-1. Not for a reward, but for justice.*

Fun fact: This is the music for the final boss fight, where it's you and one guy squaring off in the backdrop of a nuked city. The guy you're fighting happens to be the one who nuked it moments before, killing your allies and wingmen in the process.
No triumph. No glory. Just two would-be kings of the sky fighting over a broken throne.
It's a damn good game. The whole soundtrack to it has some solid pieces. Kings is just the top of it. If you've played any flight sims, or specifically played an Ace Combat game before, it'll be a very quick onboarding to it. I highly recommend it.

A cool note about this song is that it has the motifs from nearly every other song in the game's OST, so for someone familiar with the rest of the soundtrack, it really feels like it's telling your story from the rest of the game. That's what most of those weaving melodies that you noted are from.

The composer has a YT channel where he has commentary on making this soundtrack. Amazing game, especially if you have VR. "Showdown" is the other really popular stand-alone track, though the whole soundtrack is great.

    • @tomasmurphy9888
      @tomasmurphy9888 ปีที่แล้ว +6

To be fair, part of the reason these two are the most popular songs is they're part of the two most memorable missions.
Showdown is a glorious romp in one of the biggest air battles in history, where both sides had to send damn nigh their entire air force or face losing everything they'd sent. No SAMs, no Railguns, no Ships - just you, your targets, your backup, and the blue, backed by a piece that knows how much fun pure flight is and showing it.
Kings is two bitter enemies, knife fighting as a city burns down around them, filled with anger and determination to stop the madman in front of you and hatred for what he's done - with bittersweet reminders of how freeing flight can be with the broad, swooping string parts.
All of the missions in this game are fun. And the soundtrack is pretty damn good for all of them. But they never synced up to the expectations of the mission as well as these two songs did.

I know I'm way late to this party, and a couple people who weren't have already mentioned it, but I always assert that while Kings is a great piece on its own, it really pales to the emotions it brings forth in-game/in-context. Throughout the storyline, practically every time a big character is introduced (be it a rival pilot, a behemoth warship, or an entire military) there's an easily recognized jam playing in the background of the mission centered upon them. The final mission brings all of these characters with you to the end of the world, and Kings combines all their themes likewise.

Please listen to the Music from this games spiritual predecessor Ace Combat. The composer for the AC series has been around for 20 years and is amazing at mixing modern percussion and beats with orchestra. Standouts include Zero from AC 0 which is a flamenco/opera duel and Daredevil from AC 7. The soundtracks have never been bad.
Also Showdown is another standout track from PW.

After coming down from a climatic battle in a captured capital city, the side the mercenary player is fighting for and the enemy federation agree to a cease-fire, effectively ending the war.
The best pilot of the enemy federation betrays both sides, steals a prototype superfighter and puts like 20 miniature nukes into the city, which not only blows it to hell but literally causes a chain reaction that causes landmasses around the world to start erupting.
Now probably millions are dead, both sides of this war are seemingly just gone, and the only people left are your backseat weapon-systems officer (who is struggling just to stay concious from the enormous g-force being put on her), and this rival pilot who is flying straight at you.
A duel between who gets to be king of the ashes and rubble of what's left.

The reason for this song to be so epic and groovy is that it plays at the very end of the game, during your last dogfight, which is a duel between you and the last enemy ace. Oh, and you are both flying over a city that just got nuked by him out of spite because he`s a sore loser and a psychopath.

About 4:50 Question, about what piece you are hearing.
I'm not sure if it a theme from other classic pieces but it is a recurring notes, theme within all Project Wingman pieces with different build-up and environments.
Such as Homestead, OST from early mission in the game.
Calamity, OST during conflict escalation of the game.
Likely also in Cascadian Conflict, first DLC mission OST.
Both Project Wingman and Ace Combat (Game that Project Wingman is inspired by) has a notes/theme that keep recurring in other pieces, likely building lore, environemnt and relativeness to the player. I'm not sure what this process is called in Music making.

Will you be reacting to the opening of Oshi No Ko? It's called "Idol" by Yoasobi. I would recommend avoiding the MV though as it kinda spoils episode 1 if you want to watch the anime, which I highly recommend. It's a very popular show and it's mainly centered around showing the darker side of the idol and entertainment industry.
The song itself is sung from the perspective of Hoshino Ai who is a upcoming idol whose "mantra" is "Lies are the ultimate form of love". A major theme of the series is this idea of selling a lie to the fans like how idols (atleast in Japan) need to hide relationships or risk losing their fans. The lyrics make a lot more sense if you watch the first episode and understand Hoshinos personality but the song is really good regardless.

@FailedNorSeling In reality, a minor is the easiest minor key to write in... it's the relative minor of C Major. No sharps and no flats. Pretty common key to write in tbh so it's likely just coincidence
