Some of the cutscenes are EVEN HAMMIER than the dialog in this game, and as a newcomer you might miss the importance of a couple story beats, but overall its a really great experience and sorta solves one of your gripes with the game, which is that the level and objective design is way more engaging than Project Wingman - each level has its own game within itself that really make the decision of what plane and which special weapon you take feel a lot more valuable. AC7 really is better with the DLC missions, with how amazing they are. Plus, the final boss of those missions is probably better than any other fight from X-02 mister X and second birb. The voice performance, the sfx, the music of the second and third phase are just phenomenal.
On one hand, all the electromagnetic emissions of the railguns interfering with your hud is a neat bit of immersion. On the other hand, I think I burnt out my retinas the first time I played this fight.

This fight is so nerfed on normal man, on mercenary it’s so much crazier and feels legendary. Anyway glad the big brick finished one of my top games on PC.
I prefer no checkpoints, it makes things more intense and the dopamine dump when you get through a tough mission is larger as a result. Unlike Ace Combat 7, which is a cake walk anyway. Add in checkpoints and the whole thing becomes child’s play. That’s one of the reasons I really appreciate Project Wingman
AC7 is cake on Ace. Next one should make Ace like Mercenary. Add more named enemies as a bonus, make enemies actually pose a threat to an experienced player, bring out the harder units earlier in the game, just give that little extras sauce to make it possible for someone who's mastered it to have a new challenge. I do think checkpoints should be used, but only sparingly. That way, if you screw up at the tail end of a longer mission, you don't have to do the whole thing again. It could still be checkpoint free for the others.
it annoyed me a couple of times where i was almost at the end of an incredibly long mission but i accidentaly crashed, but it also made those moments when you're centimetres away from crashing much more boner-worthy
