I would highly recommend you now go with My Name Is Red by Pamuk. It's set in Ottoman Empire where a miniaturist gets killed and we have three potential killers. Pamuk takes us on a journey where each chapter is told with a different POV, sometimes even by inanimate objects (like a coin or the colour red). Beautifully written and transportative.

One year old reply, but I agree. Just finished My Name is Red for my bookclub and it was a really rewarding read, if a bit of a slog to get through at over 400 pages ;p.

As a Turkish, Pamuk affects my emotions so much and sometimes it leaves me confused. I definitely loved “Snow” and I am really happy that you liked it too, there is so much symbolism that makes me think “how can someone come up with such clever metaphors”, but I absolutely hated “The Museum of Innocence”. I know it is going to sound weird but Pamuk’s writing is gorgeos in English and Turkish, though, when I read him in Turkish it does not have the same impact. So, I don’t know who the translator is but it is obvious that he/she/them put a lot of effort. Loves from Turkey ❤️

I absolutely loved The Museum of Innocence, and to people who are in the middle of deciding between starting to read the book or not even bothering to read, I would definealety recommend that book. Also, if you come to Istanbul, you should go to the Museum of Innocence which made after the book.

while I was reading "The Museum of Innocence" it made me put so much struggle to continue because there are a lot of descriptions and long sentences to stay focused but I couldn't keep going on and I hope this summer i will reread it to the end with pleasure.

So weird to hear non-Finnish booktuber talk about Finnish lit :D If you ever want to try some other Finnish literature I'd highly recommend books by Tove Jansson (especially The Summer Book or the Moomin books!), Pajtim Statovci, Sofi Oksanen or Emmi Itäranta :)

I just read Snow too in February! I share a lot of your feelings about it! It is truly indescribable, there was so much going on, so much symbolism and undercurrents, it was hard to keep track of. It was such an experimental / post-modern work which I was not expecting when I started reading it because the language is so old-timey to me haha and yess I think Ka is supposed to be presented as an unlikeable character and his imperfections are definitely put on show. I think everyone had unlikeable characteristics but also good ones.

The only Pamuk I've read so far is My Name is Red and I think you'd really like it! It's a historical murder mystery between illustrators in the Ottoman Empire and not only is it engaging and funny, it also has a lot of reflections on art, symbols, death, spirituality and intercultural conflicts. And the opening chapter is narrated by the victim who complains about getting murdered, what's not to love!

I haven't read 'n.p.', but I have read 'kitchen', 'asleep' and 'goodbye tsugumi', and I loved them all. I think my favorite would be 'asleep'. She creates such strange worlds with interesting characters in it. All these books are short, so they could be an interesting change of pace in between bigger stories.

There was a time when I was thinking of moving to Finland. As a result I ended up reading, and doing research on the country. I fell in love with Finland. The move though, did not work out. I ended up remaining in the U.S. With that, 'The Year of the Hare' sounds incredibly fascinating. Even though I can't be in Finland, I can read about it. I will keep this Novel in mind. 😃

    hello, emma!
what a lovely way to start the day~ 💓💓💓
it's okay if you didn't enjoy N.P. because, honestly, it's my least favourite book of hers. the premise was so good, but the execution not so much. though it also made me think if there was something about the translation that didn't come across very well because lizard is another book of yoshimoto I'm not particularly fond of, and both are translated by the same person. still, I'd highly recommend kitchen. I read it during a time when I wasn't feeling very good and it really helped me deal with loss and grief. I'd also highly recommend goodbye tsugumi.
