I just finished Snow, and by the end I had an overwhelming sense of sadness, and kept thinking about Leonard Cohen’s song “Dance me to the End of Love.” I think your video about Pamuk’s books is excellent. I’m going to watch it a few more times and take some notes.
I've just finished Snow and I needed to do some research on this author. I am not entirely sure why but I loved the book. I can't tell why at all but I felt enthralled by the story and the fact that I can't tell what I enjoyed so much is so strange to me. I guess Pamuk creates a captivating atmosphere and I fell for it without even realising it! Thanks for the video, The Museum of Innocence will probably be my next Pamuk's thanks to your recommendation.
True! I've had a hard time with Snow too. I also found the main love story quite childish and unrealistic. But now that I saw your video I think I must give it a try with his other novels.
Currently reading his "Nights Of Plague"... Great great book... This is the 1st book of him which I'm reading... Just fell in love with his writing... ❤️🇮🇳❤️
I just finished Snow, which is the first of Orhan Pamuk's books I've read. I loved it, it was so captivating. I need to reread it in order to appreciate it in the way I think it deserves, since I went in with zero context. I'll definitely read his other works!!
I started with My name is Red, could not understand the writing, then read Museum of Innocence and Istanbul. It was great point though , to start with Museum of innocence totally agree with you!!! Orhan Pamuk is such a unique novelist, who knows beauty in melancholy.
Because I went this summer in a holiday in Istanbul and Bodrum, my husband recommended me to read something by a Turkish author. I chose, luckily, The museum of innocence. You are right. He is more like a descriptive author ( thoughts and places) and I gradually warmed to this style of writing, but the more I was progressing with the book the more I liked it. I won’t say more about the book as I don’t want to spoil it for future readers but , Yes, I recommend to have patience with the reading as it’s not something you might have been reading before. However it’s like a beautiful diamond , carefully polished until it gets to its perfection. Beaty can be painful but still it’s beauty! I need to know more about the author and his books.
Thank you for your comment! If you enjoyed the Museum of Innocence I have made a video about it that you can check 😃 Let me know what else you'll read from Pamuk
this video is great! thank you for your in depth review. I had relatives who migrated to Turkey and am an immigrant to the US from Ukraine so the question of identity is quite of interest to me. I have Snow but I'll probably follow your advice and get The Museum of Innocence to read first. I love plotless, deeply felt and nostalgic, questioning books which seems like what he's about. Thank you!
Am just wondering which Pamuk to read first and I came across your video. I have subbed immediately. Thank you for sharing your opinions - I will go with Museum of Innocence 😊
Excellent insight! I have start with My name is red first, which was a great introduction and followed it by Snow which has really shaked me ! The atmosphere in both is amazing.
Hello Rozan! Hope I've spelt your name correctly. I've just come across your channel and had to subscribe! Your enthusiasm for literature and reading is inspiring. I am reading My Name is Red just now and really loving it. It's my 4th Pamuk. He's an amazing writer. Btw may I compliment you on your excellent English. Are you studying it? Your fluency and advanced understanding are impressive. Greetings from Ireland!
Hi there. Thank you very much for your kind words. I'm happy to see another Pamuk fan. To answer your question, no I do not study English. I'm not even sure myself of how I've learned it at this point but its a little bit of everything (school, work, movies, music plus reading)
Just picked up a copy of the white castle from a charity shop and was Looking for some background on the author, might have a few more books on my TBR now 😆
Love that for you. Feel free to email me if you need more questions answered about Ohran Pamuk or just want to connect! The email is memoriesofareader@gmail.com
I've never read Orhan Pamuk. What is his best book accorning to you ? I've just reserved "The Black Book" at the library. I was looking for something dark and mysterious. That book fits in.
The Black Book is in my opinion his best work. Though my favorite remains The Museum of Innocence. Be patient with The Black Book, it is a labyrinth of feelings, mysteries and characters but it is worth it
Orhan Pamuk is one of my favourite writers and I would like to suggest three books of Turkish literature that influenced Pamuk. I think that you might like them when you read. The books are; The Time Regulation Institute by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar, The Disconnected by Oguz Atay and lastly Motherland Hotel by Yusuf Atilgan. Greets from Istanbul :)
Teşekkürler, for your suggestions! I am definitely interested in reading writers that influenced him. Motherland Hotel sounds like a very interesting title to me, might go for it soon. Greetings from Debre 👋🏻
Nice video. I'm a big fan of Pamuk. One writer I'd recommend if you like Pamuk is the Nobel winning Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa. His books have incredible range, from historical fiction, to mystery, to high comedy. I would start with his novel Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter. It's semiautobiographical and gives a great sense of Lima in the 1950s. And of course, anything you can find by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, beginning with his masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude. I think you will enjoy these authors.
Hello. Thank you so much for your recommendations. I have read Marquez and quite enjoyed both books ( 100 Years and Love in Time of Cholera) I have not read Vargas Losa but I'll try to get my hands on one of his books. Thank you again
My parents are from Turkey but I was born and raised in Germany. I've recently heard about Orhan Pamuk and now I wanna read one of his books. The only question is with which one I should start 😅. Besides my Turkish sucks so let's see if I'll be able to understand it or get the german translation.
Hii! Glad to hear you're interested in Pamuk. If you don't mind big books you definitely have to read the Museum of Innocence. Snow is also pretty good because the main character is related to Germany so maybe you'll find yourself as a Turkish living in Germany 😃 Let me know where you'll start.
Most Turks I've spoke.. they hate him. They really, passionately hate him. Although I doubt that they have ever read any of his works. As for me I've recently read "Snow and I really enjoyed it. It has a certain atmosphere, a certain... something and that alone is, at least for me, a great achievement! Above all I admire his honesty. Turkish society desperately needs more people like him but as always it is too difficult for them to understand it.

I loved strangeness in my mind and am now reading museum of innocence and I just love them both.
