As always, thank you so much for watching SUMO PRIME TIME. We're delighted to receive your comments and suggestions about our latest installment "The making of a rikishi". With the full cooperation from the members of Arashio beya, we were able to introduce what living in a sumo stable is like and also show their commitment and determination to become successful pro sumo rikishi. We'll try to bring you more in-depth coverage of rikishi's lifestyles as we move ahead. As the autumn tournament draws near, all the combatants already have their sights set on making an impact with impressive performances in Tokyo starting September 11. SUMO PRIME TIME will keep you updated on how all the rikishi are gearing up for the upcoming contest in addition to offering sumo's basic knowledge for novice watchers, so please come back and join us again!

No no no, now that there is no Jason’s Sumo Channel (which had a contest every basho), Natto Sumo, and Kintayama to name a few. Those channels were a lifeline for foreigners to learn about sumo.

More content like this, please. I like seeing rikishi as normal people. Training seriously, but also having fun. We don't get to see much of that during a basho.

Wakatakakage's demonstration of suriashi and his explanation, "it's like biting the clay with your toes", was a real eye opener for me. So important for a basic understanding of sumo. Thanks for the video!

Being that the Waka brothers are some of my favorite rikishi (Wakatakakage is literally No. 1!), this video was especially awesome! Thank you for your insight, as always, Hiro! Forgot to add that it was really cool to hear 'Kage speaking a little English! I had to replay it, cause I thought I imagined it, lol.

This is awesome. I think this is my favorite Sumo Prime Time video so far, and I am thrilled that you visited Arashio-beya. I love all three of the Onami brothers. Thanks for the peek inside the fridge. I have seen plenty of chanko-making videos, but not that.
I hope your legs have recovered from their ordeal!
Maybe when you get to more advanced subjects, you could do something on the heya support staff, including the yobidashi, gyoji, and tokoyama. We get to see them on tournament days, of course, but there is not much on what they do on non-tournament days. Another good subject would be the role of the okamisan. They never get the credit they deserve.

I will never not be impressed with the physical abilities of these giants. It's not just strength, but their flexibility, balance, and stamina is incredible. I simply cannot imagine how difficult it is to move around so much mass so quickly against someone trained EXACTLY like you and keep it up for hours on end. Anyone who doubts this I simply show them a picture of a rikishi doing a near perfectly vertical standing side split with no struggle on their face

  • @mtgmac1

Hey Sumo Prime Time! Awesome vid, keep on keeping on! My advice would be: put the wrestlers name somewhere on the screen when he's speaking, even for a split sec. I could recognize both Wakas and Kotokuzan, but would be awesome to know the other guys!

My son has generally been smaller than a lot of his friends; he's been so inspired by Wakatakakage's and Wakamotoharu's ability to win against much larger rikishi by being smart and agile. Pretty sure you could have heard us cheering from Japan when he got his yusho! Thank you, Hiro, for the English content!

These little nuances of the sport give us a larger perspective of the life of a rikishi and what builds them. Arigato Hiro. One question though, ..are you allowed to take photos of the rikishi through the glass while they are training or should you ask permission first? I've never been to a sumo stable and would like to visit one upon a return to Japan.

Arashio is particular as it has glass windows for this purpose, as it is one of the newer ones. You can take pictures, as long as you're not lurking all day there of course. Som stables have "tours" or can be visited inside if you make a reservation with time, but due to COVID it has been suspended.

What time does their day start (local time , of course)?
What is their daily schedule like? Meals, naps, exercise, etc.
Do they, especially the newest rikishi, have any free time?
What about Saturday, Sunday, Holiday, vacations? (Japanese equivalents, of course.)
    When does their day end?
Does someone teach them, direct their training?
When I was in basic training, I noticed that in the middle of the 'night' (2:00-3:00am?) DI's (Drill Sergeants/Instructors) checked out every recruit. They stopped by his bunk to observe many things: breathing, nightmares, sweating, etc. Does anyone do that for the rikishi, especially the very new ones?
Japan Sumo Association, Hiro Morita and Sumo Prime Time, thank you for your efforts. May you and yours stay well and prosper.
    Terry
