Congrats Dario! This guitar lesson has been selected by our curators and listed on our website as the Best Guitar Tutorial for this song. Thank you for your hard work and expertise!
It doesn't matter. He speaks "Music" thanks Dario for the Great Lesson. It was easy to understand how to play the song the way you broke it into its different parts. I'm looking forward to more of your video lessons.
I was just looking for something on how to play the guitar solo and found this video. It was very useful and now I have the basis for the whole song, not just the solo. I like the way he carefully laid out each phrase. I'm a bit unsure of the flourish at the end but I should be able to figure it out.
thank you Dario you know how to explain very well which makes it understandable for a begginer like myself. Outstanding job brother once again thank you.
FANTASTIC TUTORIAL!! Your angles are great!! visible and clear placement of fingers Is there... great detailed, step by step explanation. I'm so glad you pay attention to the camera angles. Thank you
Thanks Dario.im only now learning guitar after putting it aside years ago. this is the first song I've tried learning in entirety and I found your teaching awesome. so finally I'm stringing something together.great work
Thank you so so much! I really wanted to learn this, but there aren't that much good tutorials on youtube. i really appreciate that you're doing it that slow, because i play the guitar for a few years now, but i'm not experienced with solis and that stuff. it really helped me! thank you! :)
ANOTHER GREAT LESSON-- thanks- Odd, even this short little song utilizes all three flats-- the flatted 3rd, 5th, and 7th-- I fully expected to find these notes in all rock and blues songs; (and Brent Mason licks); but not OLD country songs. -- but there they are in this Johnny Cash classic.
thanks man i learnt this a few years ago been playing it in our band, and i must say heard so many versions by other bands but this version beats them all by far, great great lesson well done 10/10
Great job, Dario. I would only add that to get the "boom ditty" sound of Perkin's rhythm, I prefer to hit the D string (all this while holding the E chord) twice--producing the "dit-ty": E string (boom), D sting twice (dit-ty), A string (boom), D string twice (dit-ty). Same with other songs in other chords, my favorite being a full C: 3-3-2-0-1-0
Very nice! I really like your teaching style. If I could make one recommendation respectfully: You do a great job of demonstrating each phrase. It would be helpful, after demonstrating the second phrase, to see the first and second phrases played together for better context and memory. After the third phrase lesson, then demonstrate all three together before moving on to the fourth phrase, and so on...other than that...excellent lesson!
Capo on the first fret and play in the regular b7 chord, a chord, and e chord. Do the opening picking on the b7 chord that goes da da da da da du du. That's how Johnny Cash played it on his recording.
@gmaclll Thanks man! I understand when you say that the open G sounds a bit off but I believe that's what's on the original recording. It might be that Luther was trying to play the B and played the G instead or it might be that he was really going for the open G.. I don't think anybody can really be sure. In my opinion you can use the B instead of G if you prefer it, it keeps the 'meaning' of the phrase so it's not 'that' important. I hope it helps.
Am I missing something? It says the first E segment is repeated 7 times but in the video it's 9 isn't it? If this is in the comments somewhere I apologize. I didn't read all 100+ of them. I think the video is great and I'll follow the video in the end or the vocalist for the change. Just wondering why the discrepancy. Are two of the measures intro? Thanks, Steve
Everything was great - easy to follow your chords and finger placements but as hard as I try I cant get the strumming 'especially' the bit after the hammer on solo. It sounds flat somehow, must admit I have only been playing 12 months but as much as I try I cant get the strumming rythm/sound like yours. Maybe I cant get the speed on the two upstrokes?!
thank you Dario you know how to explain very well which makes it understandable for a begginer like myself. Outstanding job brother once again thank you.
Best lesson of this song I've found on TH-cam and great for beginners ... in my opinion. Every beginner needs a song they can play while driving everyone else crazy. I really think this is a good one if you take it by sections as given and go slow memorizing. Everyone wants to run before they can walk as a beginner, don't. walk it, learn t. May Johnny be at peace ... and making music.
Best lesson of the Luther Perkins version on YT. Very difficult to replicate his or Bob Wooton's rail drive live though. Both of these guys were instrumental to the Cash sound. Great job man, I learned something from your lesson - thanks.

The main reason "people" hit dislike is to yank other peoples chains......
Don"t let "people" yank your chain. Ignore them and enjoy.

I've noticed Bob Wootton's a little easier, since it's more simple than what Luther had.
