I've been trying to figure out why I'm getting so many comments suggesting an air conditioner, when I explained in depth that I had tried that, so I rewatched the video and... hey, how about that, I didn't explain it! Or, rather, I did, but my finger must have slipped during editing because that clip is gone. Well. That explains it. In short: - I tried a portable AC unit; it did literally nothing, standing right in front of it you couldn't tell it was running. - On days when it was much cooler outside I tried a fan in the window. It worked until I turned it off, and the moment the blades stopped spinning the room was like an oven again. - I talked to the landlord about installing a serious AC unit and he no-billed it. The walls are extremely thick brick and the owner doesn't want anyone drilling through it. I personally do not think an AC would help, the heat is coming from everywhere at once and I think I would waste $7000 getting it put in, and then the millisecond I turned it off the room would become an oven again. Several people have also asked why I don't just move the studio to the new room. There are a TON of reasons, literally too many to get into here, but it comes down to: The current studio is perfect _except for the heat problem_, which I have to believe is temporary. If it doesn't prove to be... well, I'll reassess, but for now, it's best where it is.
The walls are extremely thick brick. You have the answer for why is so hot there. The sun heat the walls and they retain the heat, releasing it slowly inside, all day. The new space do not have the walls heated and more, being in the shadow, they absorb the heat from inside and slowly radiate it outside. One way to protect the studio from heat, it would be to add a insulation solution on all that wall. May be a sanwich of [air, reflective sheet, styrofoam, air, wood panel]. Ask someone more knowledgeable about and try this solution if you feel so.
Fixing the heat situation would literally require replacing the walls or gutting the interior to put proper insulation and piping for a central A/C, so I can understand why the landlord wouldn't want it. It's easier to keep yourself cool than the rooms themselves. Lots of good stuff for that that don't cost $7k. Still wouldn't recommend staying in there for hours at a time though, it's basically a brick oven.
Removing a couple hundred watts of networking gear and that computer should at least take the edge off. I noticed the warehouse was on the opposite side of the building from the studio, if the studio were on the south side of the building and warehouse on the north, it might explain the temperature difference, since the warehouse would be getting far less direct sun. Maybe ceramic window tinting on the outside of the studio window would help reduce the heat load further.
@@SockyNoob That is why the first layer in my sandwich is air. My home have the same problem but worst: the sun heats the ceiling and I had 38C inside at night sometimes in summer. So, that is what I did, because the hause is rented. This summer I chilled at max 27C.

Because it's across the hall, this new arrangement also gives you flexibility for when it gets even damned hotter next year - worst case, you can flipflop (at least part of) the warehouse and the studio. Reading between the lines (the light through the windows) the studio is on the south side of the building and the warehouse is on the north, and thus gets a lot less heat from the sun.
You read my mind because I wanted to say the same. If the Studio window is operable, then I would SERIOUSLY consider trying to shade it from the outside while you are working. Once the sunlight comes through the window, it's too late. In addition, the brick interior implies to me that it's an old brick building. That makes it a high mass element soaking up the heat in the summer. If I were you then I would put a temp/humidity gizmo in the rooms for data acquisition. This will give you a good feel for the best times to work throughout the year.
Also possible to add an ac in between the recording space and the larger half of the room. Suboptimal since it'll increase the temp of that half but would work in a pinch to stop camera fans from turning on.

Keep enjoying what you do! Can’t wait for season 4 👋
No need to feel bad about the previous bench videos!! we were told that you were planning to go back to film at the studio at some point so I took your word for it. I haven't watched the bench videos, because they're not my thing, but I knew that the first hour long video inside the studio about... well literally anything, would rope me back in and I'd watch it immediately. I'm really happy for you that you have this new space and I'm super excited to see the new videos!! :))
This is awesome! I'm glad you've found such a great opportunity! I'm one of those "I'll watch whatever you put out" folks, but I also really appreciate when the content creators that I'm watching are legitimately excited/happy, and I hope this helps keep you excited and happy. :)
Your tech vids, and your focus on storylines therein, is so darn awesome. I also like how some of them are set in a series or theme. I get that they're hard work, but there's really nothing else quite like it in the vintage tech space. So super stoked for what's to come, and happy your workspace feel more sufficient. Its so important to be comfortable where one works.
Everytime TH-cam says CRD has posted a video, it always immediately gets sent to EVERYONE. Gotta support those of the community. Cant wait to see what you have to offer, its always interesting also being someone who enjoys things no one cares about, but can go on hours talking about them even if no one is listening to see what others who are alike can offer after all. Passion is a wonderful thing, and it keeps you sane.
Oh my god this is such great news. I remember the first video of yours I watched I loved the "you're at a friend's place and they're showing you a cool computer their dad bought overseas" vibe, and I love that you're zeroing in on that. Thanks CRD, I'm super excited
I forgot to type out the second part of this message. The part where you're going around the warehouse showing things off reminded me of when I was a kid and used to spend hours in my uncle's workshop, just inspecting the weird 90s tech he had collecting dust there. So this adds yet another layer of nostalgia for me. I can't wait to see more of it
I am definitely excited to see the new videos you make with the space. I do love the big scripted studio videos, but more casual "warehouse" videos where you talk about a random piece of equipment you may not have talked about before are also fun to watch.
Honestly my favorite part of this channel is getting a look at the behind the scenes of technical equipment and media infrastructure, and so I was a fan of the benchtop vids. With regard to the video mixers, I think what would be the most interesting way to frame it would really be to look at the development of the technology over time, rather than to try and tell a story about any one video mixer (which at the end of the day is just a hunk of undifferentiated technical commodity)
i‘m a bench video enjoyer but it‘s genuinely amazing that you have the funds and now the space to do your work in the way you wanna. this is just awesome.
I'm really happy for you man, and for your channel. Having a space that you're comfortable in is going to make a big difference in your well being, AND the quality of your videos. Enjoy your new and improved work space !
I’ve enjoyed your channel for a while, I like the long format, and the little guy bench series. Excited for the new videos and congrats on the new space!
So happy for you! Looking forward to whatever you do! I love the process of fixing things and really appreciate when that process can be turned into a narrative. I really struggle with staying organized, but the relief of having a new space makes it all worth it. Can't wait for season 4!
I’ve enjoyed the videos for a long time and caught up with old ones-the thrifting trips are nostalgic and a hoot to have on and listen to the quips along with seeing old electronics some of which looks familiar others not. Yours is one of a handful of channels that combines disparate styles of technology presentation from teardowns to assemblies to vintage electronic/computer showcases and analyses. I’m liking that you’ll have better access to more goodies in your warehouse now; keep peppering your channel with those little guy videos-I like variety too but those deep dives have really kept my attention and engaged me lately. Many require several watches to get everything, and that’s freaking awesome! In any case, congrats on the space addition and here’s to more awesome videos!
It's been apparent that you were annoyed about things for awhile now, so it's nice to finally understand why and that you've been able to address many of those long standing frustrations. Your joy for random and weird vintage tech is a huge part of what makes this channel work and it's great to see it back again. I can see you just dropping in the warehouse and building out a mini ISDN for a video...just because you can. LOL Here's to bigger and better things ahead!
You can tell by your demeanor a weight seems to have been lifted off of your shoulders 😊 New setup looks great; looking forward to seeing how it pans out 👍
I'm really glad this video exists. Obviously, I'm happy for you to have a better space to both store and showcase various things in your collection, but also the positivity is very much appreciated as I bash my head against attempting to install Linux on my old college laptop *which was already running a different flavor of linux*
This is wonderful! I really liked the benchtop videos so I'm glad they're not going away :) It's so fun to watch you be excited about the new space and it's making me excited about what's gonna happen in it!
Well done Gravis. I gotta say the most enjoyable thing of this video is seeing how excited you are. Looking forward to all the vids your upgraded space lets you make!
Yes to all of this. Love the behind the scenes, direction you want it to go in sounds awesome. Show us all the stuff you haven’t shown us. I’m here for it. The ISDN stuff sounds great.
As a big fan of the bench videos, it feels less like they are going away and more like they evolved into their next form. I'm excited to see what you do with the new space!
The Little Guys series is great and I’m glad to see your upgraded space. Cannot wait for the future and keep up the good work. I love how friendly these are.
Your enthusiasm for the new room is infectious and the demonstration definitely shows off the value of the extra space...but damn if I'm not gonna miss the unplanned Soba and Udon cameos
Hey ... an advice from someone who also had a way to small studio for ages ... put wheels on your desk! In that way you can move it for when you need to use it for working in a project, and you can wheel it back when you need to shoot video ... i am super happy i did that to my studio table, so i made the same hack for my workshop table as well 😂
What a great video to see. I remember when I first started watching you and I commented on one of your videos, and you replied back almost instantly! Knew right then and there you were deidcated to not only the content you make but your audience too.
Really happy for you, but also want to say I’ve loved the bench videos - they have been some of my fave videos so far. Regardless looking forward to whatever you do
I've been watching your channel since the Canon L2 video way back. The bench videos are nice, but as you said, I think the long-form "story" videos are where you shine. The DVD camcorders video is still one of my absolute favorites for just that reason. Diving into a product/technology either so obscure you've never heard of it, or so common you never think about it. Very excited to see what you come up with!
Also, sounds like a lot of work but why not switch rooms entirely? Put the studio in the warehouse and get your stuff over in the old studio? Seems like a permanent win.
I considered it briefly but there's a bunch of problems. The walls are laid out in a subtly different way that would make it really hard to get a good set location; the lack of an internal door means I have nowhere to put my PC (etc) where it won't be audible; the unit is one contiguous space, making audio treatment much harder (it sounds fine here only because both sides of the room are covered top to bottom with Stuff); the studio/office space makes a much worse storage area since it's not contiguous; and, ultimately, I'm comfortable with the studio where it is.
as i said before i will say again, any video you produce works for me. The calm tone you carry is infectious. Even loved the trip to the local goodwill, it was fun.
I'm so excited to see all the fun "hey look at this techy thing" videos, especially since your excitement about the tech you have is very contagious :'D So yeah, awesome!!
Oh man, what a beautiful collection (and great shelves too). I'd pay money just to walk around with you in there while you get thirty tangents deep about everything on the shelves - but videos like this are the next best thing
Glad to hear/see you get a step closer to your dream. I love everything you make, whether it's a bench video or the big story. I absolutely adore your sense for a catching plot point where you "drag" out all the stuff to a surprising reveal. But if you just sit behind the camera and tinker with an interesting object, i' am always happy if it's there. Don't waste too much time with fiddling the same setup together over and over again is exactly what i want right now, so i feel ya all the way. Anyways, do it. Enjoy it. And nice camera work!
I enjoyed the bench videos, but I'm thrilled for what the new space will enable! You've got neat and easy-to-use collection storage, spacve for extra bits like the ladders, and so much room for activities. One of the things I love about the channel is watching you always strive for improvement, and The Warehouse (tm) should be a big one.
Man you could put up a video talking about rca plugs and I’d watch it straight through. I liked the bench vids a lot, I think a bit of dynamism will make them even better! Also that pc with ww2 nose art is sick, I never put stickers on things because I’m afraid I won’t like them. I envy anyone who can.
@@CathodeRayDude didnt know where to put this: Did you try putting the cover and foil etc on the OUTSIDE of the window? thats what i do and it works wonders! the heat should be stopped before it gets through the glass ;)
@@CathodeRayDude that’s not shocking lol The why will be cool to hear about, with how much people seem to hate composite it’s quite common.
Whoa... you have an original DEC LAN Bridge? The Serial Port did an in depth video recently about that. It's a historic piece of equipment.
I can't wait to see more of it
Love the demo of your new space and how excited you seem to share the joy.
Plus the flags. Great choices.
Tbh, any flag, not just that one, should not be up and shown. Someone will be offended. Its the way the current World is.
@@Yandarval If someone is offended by a flag that supports the LGBT community, that's a them problem.
@@themaritimegirlyep, exactly.
so happy for u and excited for the future of your work ^_^ (the flag made me happy also)
warehouse 13 mentioned 🎉
I miss that show. And Jericho.
Your excitement for the new space really comes through in this video. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
I am definitely excited to see the new videos you make with the space. I do love the big scripted studio videos, but more casual "warehouse" videos where you talk about a random piece of equipment you may not have talked about before are also fun to watch.
The legend graces us with his wares.
Can't believe it gave me chills to know we're about to hit season four. It's an entirely new era of CRD. Can't wait for it.
Im hype for what comes next. I'm glad to see you keep moving upwards and forward.
LOL
Here's to bigger and better things ahead!
Love the workbench videos, had such a chill vibe, like we were hunkered down for the summer in the one place that is comfortable.
I will say, one thing I love about the bench videos that the studio videos lack is the random kitty appearances.
Cool video. Great to see behind the scenes and to see the expansion and organization. Now I'm going back to look for that pachinko machine.
well done on the for changes, looking forward to watch more great content
Let's go, the warehouse goes public
The Little Guys series is great and I’m glad to see your upgraded space. Cannot wait for the future and keep up the good work. I love how friendly these are.
Dude this is awesome, cant wait to see what videos you make in there, already saw a few things on the shelves I want to know more about!
Your enthusiasm for the new room is infectious and the demonstration definitely shows off the value of the extra space...but damn if I'm not gonna miss the unplanned Soba and Udon cameos
This is AMAZING! Keep up the good work. Behind the scenes stuff like this is great.
I love your channel so much. You're a breath of fresh air here on TH-cam. I'm so excited for you big move and I can't wait to see where it takes you!
I think I rewatched season 3 trailer couple of weeks ago... Still gives me goosebumps. congrats on new space!
Awesome, super excited for season 4.
Good luck CRD!
Hey ... an advice from someone who also had a way to small studio for ages ... put wheels on your desk!
The new layout looks much better and more functional! Nice job..looking forward to the upcoming videos it enables
I actually love your at home bench little guys videos!
Congrats on the expansion! Happy for you 😊
Really happy for you, but also want to say I’ve loved the bench videos - they have been some of my fave videos so far.
I'm definitely on team Little Guys lover.
I'm so glad for you, can't wait for S4!
Congrats, this is a great move forward. I’ve loved your video production videos.
This is exciting! So many new old things to see, hope this space leads to a better experience, for us and for you!
Congrats on the new space! Enjoy your work, keep it up! Thanks!
as i said before i will say again, any video you produce works for me. The calm tone you carry is infectious. Even loved the trip to the local goodwill, it was fun.
One thing I certainly wasn't expecting was for this to end season 3 and start season 4
Hey I'm glad you're more comfortable. Can't wait to see the videos you make!
It is bad ass to see that you were able to expand your space and better your work flow. And it is awesome to see all the bad ass stuff you have too!
Love all your videos. Love your studio flag. I watch everything, regardless, and can't wait for the warehouse videos!
Watched the Warehouse Time on the second channel. Yeah, this is gonna be GREAT!
You have the energy of a kid who built his own candy shop.
Delightful.
These videos already have an awesome more dynamic feel!
I actually intend to do a video about rca connectors (specifically, when and why they appeared on consumer TVs for video input) hahaha
@@CathodeRayDude didnt know where to put this: Did you try putting the cover and foil etc on the OUTSIDE of the window? thats what i do and it works wonders! the heat should be stopped before it gets through the glass ;)
@@CathodeRayDude that’s not shocking lol
The why will be cool to hear about, with how much people seem to hate composite it’s quite common.
I use composite for my old systems, going to my hifi AV receiver which pumps video to my crt, and sound to its speakers and subwoofer.
Positional audio on that scale in older games is wild if you haven’t tried
@@raafmaat I did some reading and everyone seemed to be saying that it didn't make any difference as long as the film is applied directly to the glass. Either way, I don't actually think the heat is primarily coming through the window, I think it's seeping in through the brick, because even when there's no significant sunlight it's still incredibly hot
@@CathodeRayDude well i applied a foil, but i also hung up a big blanket outside of the window, im guessing that one is doing most of the work
Hell yeah man, looking forward to your renewed energy and workflow, ive still been enjoying the desk vids btw, they make great companion pieces for my long nights stocking shelves but its great to see you feeling excited, and boy do i feel you on those hot summer days, anything above 70 is hell imo
Hundreds of hours of produced old tech videos on your channel. Nice seeing a short BTS video where it’s all done. Awesome space, CRD!
Youre living my dream dude. I wish I could have more space to actually work on funny little apliances. So I thank you for doing it for me. Thank you for all the nerdy and interesting videos that I enjoy so much. And good on you for investing in your hobby in such a way that you can make it your job. And yes. I would love to see more Little Guys!
This is going to be so much fun - congratulations!
Really enjoyed! Thanks for showing me around, interesting! 😁👍
I’m excited you’re excited to share your knowledge with us
