His last McLaren Ford was so much behind its competitors that he knew he'd never have the chance to win. That's why he signed for Williams. Then, in 1993 Williams had adaptive suspensions (it was its most advanced feature) and it was a great car but they were banned in 1994...so the 1994 fw16 wasn't the big deal you saw the year before. I'm Italian and there's a video when they play some interviews of Ayrton in that day before the race. He was complying about the suspensions and many other parts that were too weak according to him. I've gone to his statue and museum at Imola two weeks ago. It's sad but maybe this is the destiny of every person that seek absolute perfection with every inch of their soul. The downforce at the time was so drastic, with the tire pressures being low from the safety car slowing the field down. Was just a perfect storm of hitting the asphalt at top speed by bottoming out and losing control.
there was nothing wrong with the steering. senna went for a gamble with burned up front tires, wich made the underflow of the car fade down. he literaly had no steering because the airflow, just a few millimeters needed, got him stuck on a straight path. it was senna's addiction to win.
Senna strived for safety of the drivers and mentioned previously that someone would be injured seriously around there and he was the one to pass away due to the steering wheel snapping on him. His skill was too great for it to be a driver error. Car failure. R.I.P SENNA

When he hit the wall, one of the tyres flew up at the wrong time and smashed into his helmet, you can see the damage done on his helmet. If he were in todays F1 cars the halo would have saved him so another reason why the halo will stay in F1

Massa got hit by a debris and got incapacitate, it wasn't a mechanical fault or a driver error. In Senna's case, it was a mechanical fault: The steering bar broke.

I was a young Schumacher fan at the time and I remember the moment seeing Senna go straight from Michael’s onboard. I got excited in that moment because I knew it meant Michael was going to take the lead. It still hurts to think that was my first thought even though I couldn’t have known how horrific this would be. I learned and grew a lot that day. RIP Ayrton.

It's called sportsmanship. On the moment, it's normal to feel joy, but then when you realize that a driver had been killed, you feel terrible for what you have done, but you couldn't know.
You look at this and only then appreciate how far safety has advanced since 1994. Of course, after this we thought F1 was already very safe, but Jules Bianchi was tragic (also due to brain injury) and the two marshalls. The crashes that Alonso, Lecrec and Ericsson suffered would have killed them or spectators in these old cars. Only now I think F1 is really safe enough (though if you get rear ended, you still have the potential to injure your back).

If u really watch close u see Senas head turn slightly indicating to me he was trying to steer into the slide with no response from the steering wheel. The steering column break end of that’s why he went off.

@@marsenmoon I think what happened (and there's a lot of videos with a tracer on the yellow button on the wheel) is that the steering column was already partially snapped or at least was cracking as the race went on. And that Ayrton did have a snap of oversteer due to a slight lack of tyre pressure making the car bottom out more. But where the official story says that he corrected and ran out of road, I believe that the steering column snapped just as he steered into the slide. This explains why he doesn't even seem to attempt to turn after going off line. Had the steering column still been intact, he would have still hit the wall but there's no question he would have been able to alleviate the angle somewhat.
I don't know why, but every time I watch his crash, as he starts his last lap, I always hope it's the lap before, so he has at least one more lap to live...silly I know.

There's no doubt in my mind that the steering column broke. He's turning left, yet when the car breaks away and goes straight you don't see his hands return to the straight position. It was steering failure all day long.

Spark do only mean that the compression is very high. The floor of the car does simply touch the surface, while this is happening you lose lots of downforce, but increase the speed due to the stopped airflow which created downforce. You can see ih very often the Red Bulls, they are trying to get faster on the straight due to that.
The whole "bottoming out" thing is rubbish. Even if it did bottom out, airflow would be restored extremely quickly upon "un-bottoming" so steering inputs would be possible.... He had adequate downforce to brake heavily from 190~130, no downforce, no braking. Steering column failure.
@@robweeks3238 When the car bottomed out Senna turned into the slide which is why you see the car view not rotating anymore. When the car's grip was restored, Senna had the front wheels pointed into the turn, which then instantly veered the car right, and off the track.

Football and F1 were sports with succesful brazilians. But Senna held the status of a national hero here, he was someone who made it from a country that had been economically broken for several years prior. I don't know much about Clark's history, and I am heavily biased towards my country, so it would be an unfair comparison to make, but just think of it like this: when Senna's coffin came to São Paulo, 2 million people attended (or tried to) his funeral. It was heavily covered by the media, and he is to many brazilians the greatest sportsperson ever. Every Brazilian who watched that race remembers what they were doing that day.

One of the most surreal things about this video is the fact that you see senna in the mirror on the onboard in the last seconds of his life. You can see him moving with the car, full of life, just a normal race for him until it wasnt.
this was not a conscious decision. he leaned his head against the g-force. but the g-force was suddenly zero when the steering broke. so his head snapped to the left by his own muscle power.

One strange fact about this corner is that between 1987 and 1994 3 of the 4 big accidents that happened were Williams cars. In 87 Piquet crashed heavily then in 92 it was Patrese and in 94 of Senna died. The other accident was when Garhard Burger's Ferrari burst in to flames during the race in 1989.
I was 23.. I saw it at home.. I left the room... Maybe half an hour later my father came out and said "he's gone.. Senna's dead..".. we were all in silence.. Years later I visited the Williams F1 centre, and saw all the F1 cars.. there's a gap.. a huge gap between the cars.. behind is a large picture of Ayrton... So poignant... Senna....

He crashed so hard into that wall, his car almost bounced back to the middle of the track, you gotta be commited. I'm biased to say, but for me it's the Goat. Many lived as winners. Senna died as one, as the best, fast and in first place, until his very end. It's bittersweet, but maybe there was no proper way for him to leave.
You look at that corner and wonder why they didn't have something there , tires , foam, pick a safety item etc. i guess it's easy to look back and criticize knowing what we do now 20+ years later.
I guess the unbound tyre barriers of the day tended to catch a car coming in at a tight angle, and would actually make the deceleration worse. Probably thought it was better to deflect the car along the wall. Same reason Indycar and NASCAR persisted with unprotected concrete walls for so long. The modern tyre barrier where it's all wrapped would be better, as would TecPro, or even the SAFER barrier used in the States.
And if they didn't make the run off area off concrete or asphalt and had grass or gravel that would have decelerates the car quicker which might off made the crash Less severe

It is obviously a steering failure. If you slow the footage down you can clearly see that he hits a mid corner bump which throws the car off balance. Small mid corner corrections are normal but you can see the exact moment when his steering blows because the front wheels don't correct back to the turn radius of Ayrtons hands on the wheel. Even if it wasn't a complete snap, a mid corner bump on a car thats riding too low can jolt parts loose and thus be the failure. His death was 100% not because he was driving too hard and aggressive. This is a racing team not setting up a car properly and refusing to admit any fault when it is clear that the mechanical failure of the car resulted in Senna's untimely death

At 0:51 Senna desperately and forcefully steers left feeling that he lost control of the car but the wheels do not turn at all and keep going straight. Its clear as day and night that the steering bar was broken and that is the reason why the accident happend.

Can anyone tell me why there are no recordings of Senna's on-board camera after the director cuts on the track camera just when Senna's car goes off the track?
The original footage ended just before the impact. It was already accused back then that one or some seconds got deleted by FOCA TV. The videos available on TH-cam now and in the Senna movie are shortened by another second or so for whatever ill reason. I did download the original footage in the end of the 90s, it's somewhere in my archive. However the resolution was pretty bad obviously since it's a Quicktime file from the mid-90s.

Gostaria de identificar um ponto que ninguém percebeu, ao menos nunca vi nenhum comentário citando. Todos falam que o mais plausível para o acontecido tenha sido a quebra da barra de direção. Mas note, no segundo que senna passa reto há um movimento na dianteira do carro para a esquerda , como se ele estivesse perdendo a traseira do carro. O movimento é bem rápido, mas se você olhar com atenção você verá. Pois bem, antes do acidente o carro de Senna passou pelo local da batida que correu na largada varias vezes, e talvez tenha passado por algum objeto perfurante. Se isso ocorreu e o pneu furado tenha sido o traseiro esquerdo, faz com que o pneu dianteiro direito fique mais alto e sem aderência, justamente o pneu que era responsável por manter o carro virando e acompanhando a curva. Logo concluo... Senna estava com pneus frios, e provavelmente o pneu traseiro esquerdo estava furado, fazendo com que a dianteira estivesse levantada e consequentemente sem aderência. Quando ele perde um pouco a traseira na curva, no movimento que eu citei, o pneu traseiro estava sem calibragem adequada e A consequência disso fez com que ele passasse direto para o muro. Quem acha que estou certo deixa um joia! Saudades do nosso ídolo!
@ 0.48 Left screen...sparks from under Senna's chassis just before he took on Tamburello. It is well documented that the track at SM was dangerously bumpy, add to that the steering column on Senna's fw16 had a somewhat botched extension weld to accomodate his requirements. Watching these clips over and over again, as a huge Senna fan maybe wanting all the answers as to why we really did lose him, my own personal conclusion can only point to the flat out speed towards Tamburello, hitting the bumpy track at that pace, and referring to the spark I mentioned, that the sheer force of hitting that not so smooth track may have well buckle the already, somewhat compromised, steering column, causing Senna to sadly lose control. My views may not be correct nor wrong...but they are something to ponder over.
watch pausing between 0:48 and 0:50 observing the trees on the upper right corner and see a little white smoke coming from there, and how his head fall aside in the mirror afterwards. some say it was a shot.

I have long analyzed the video of the camera ok on board of senna before impact. Note 2 details that you can check. Number 1, as everyone can see, when taking the curve you can see senna's hand, part of the wheel and a yellow button, just before the accident the yellow button betrays the movement of the steering wheel, a movement that is noted is towards senna's body . Number 2, if you notice Senna's helmet you never look at the frame on the camera on board, and just when the wheel moves towards your body, the yellow button disappears from the frame and Senna's helmet appears a bit on the camera. That movement I think is caused by the inertia of exerting force on the steering wheel to take the curve, since like many of us if the G force makes your body push to the right, one will force (especially with the neck) to go to the opposite side. In this sense, let's imagine that we push someone with all our strength and from one second to another that person stands aside and takes off, the consequence is that you will leave with inertia and end up on the floor. If we apply this same principle imagining ourselves in Senna's place, we can easily say what was the cause of his death.
still watching this in FEB2024. It could only be a steering wheel shaft fail. Look how bumpy was the track at the moment he goes straight, also visible on Schumy camera. They said they soldered the steering wheel of senna's to mach his preference driving position or maybe because Senna was complaining about the car's steering. So this would mean the steering shaft would have a weak point and if you add to his a bumpy surface at high speed on a high speed corner with high G's loads... this is the result.

This onboard of Schumacher has been difficult to find over the years finally found it. It’s been deleted on YT over the years. It gives you a good view of what happened. Still can believe it that a piece of the suspension struck his head killed Senna and not the impact. Just makes you angry because of how close to surviving he could have been. Also in 2009 Ruben’s suspension spring hit Massa in the head and almost killed him. Crazy to think really that it almost happened to another Brazilian driver.
It’s obvious the steering column failed. Piquet said it himself. A driver hits the brakes only when they cannot steer the car properly. Even today, drivers first try to correct their line and if not they brake. Senna being an experienced driver would first try to steer the car away from its vector, as shown by his head coming towards the left of the camera which shows effort. However he couldn’t do that due to the failure and hit the brakes. It is no secret that Coulthard had a similar accident in winter testing as well.
I believe I have seen what caused the crash, before his car stopped steering his head dropped hard left, presumably pointing towards an injury or black out before the crash even happend
His head dropped the second the car started to do other things he wasn't asking it to do. In his mind he's turning left out the exit of Tamburello and probably already planning his positioning for the next bend.. until suddenly - something snaps - there's absolutely no way his body WOULDN'T react to that....just plot out the forces and it will make sense. It's important to remember that a professional racing driver, especially like Ayrton, can race at crazy speeds but still remain perfectly calm and relaxed...but being calm and relaxed at 200 mph doing what you always do.. suddenly something goes wrong. I bet you would have a reaction if for example you were riding your motorbike fast and something came across your path close in-front...your entire body will shock..probably to the point you have to pull over to calm down...it's the same thing here.

@@Haunteh I'm have zero clue where you are getting your information. Telemetry clearly shows that he was braking and braking hard. He went from 190 mph as he left the track to 135 mph two seconds later when he hit the wall. That's the best anyone could have asked for in that time. He definitely wasn't blacked out. His head drops because of g-force.
The Race directors said that the Other pilot had died in the Hospital, thus continuing the Race, in fact he died on the Track, then the Race would have been Interrupted for Accident Investigation, but unfortunately the Greed of the Directors killed Ayrton.
What killed ayrton and ratzenberger? lack of protection on concrete walls. A tire barrier on those walls, and the two of them probably wouldn't have died. That simple! :)
Thank you. It’s possible to see some interruptions in the video in both cars before the accident. If you have your mobile phone near of speakers before ring your phone you will experience some interruption. Considering that each team uses different frequencies to communicate with the team. You need a low frequency to cause the interruption signal at the same time. And after Senna is possible to see Senna accident. The most curious is that Williams reviver some peace from the car. When is totally forbidden collecting anything from the cars when having an accident. Each time more this looks like someone like senna stop to drive. Only God knows the Truth.

Look at 0.25 speed 0:50… look right above the antenna… it seems 2 smokes coming out the wood like a gun shoot and at the same moments both cameras have some fauilers… and after that he hitting that wall.. this would explain why it seems that he lost concessions… look up some images from his helmet.. you can see clearly a perfect round bullet hole… I mean it sounds really crazy but it’s there in the footage…

The problem is we will never know what was removed from the car after the accident. Hi made enemies, and the worst was the F1 director, who didn't like his style. Anyway, nothing that we can bring to light will bring back his life. Today I watched a few parts of Monoca GP, and F1 now is a toy for the richest kids. Is better to put an automatic car if the intention is only to show up the technologies in the car, because real pilots we don't have anymore.
Probably should be talking about Senna the 7 time champion. You got the feeling these 2 where just warming up for some real classic battles over the next few years.
While I do not believe the Williams team will ever formally acknowledge it, not now and certainly not in 50 or 100 years time. I genuinely believe deep down Sir Frank Williams, Adrian Newey and Patrick Head know the adjustment to the steering column before the race which has been well documented as very poorly done, was the catalyst for this sad event which unfolded on that tragic day in Imola 1994.
Again honestly what does it matter at this point? Whether or not IT was steering column that broke down or not at moment of the accident or whether there was other reason, Its not gonna bring him Back..... accidents and mechanical failures are Part of F1...Im still saying what Ive always Said that had there been a tyre wall there that Senna might have survived regardless, cause with tyre wall Its much less unlikely that tyre and Its suspension would not have hit Senna in the head
You can clearly see the steering wheel is acting very strange when he was driving. He should've come into the pit stop few laps earlier and who knows....he could be still alive to this day
Why were there no tyre walls here? I've read that the concrete wall had to be there because of the river behind it, but surely some padding would have helped a lot?
These were times of continuous improvement but sadly for Ayrton, the necessary improvements came too late. 20 years prior to this and the chequered flag would be waved my a man on track only a few feet away from the cars doing life threatening speeds. I remember seeing clips of Sterling Moss with a cigarette in his hand whilst doing his winners parade lap. That simply wouldn't happen today. The reason we see tyre barriers today are the result of tragic incidents such as this
All caused by a combination of tyres which had lost pressure during the safety laps and Senna pushing too hard with a car in that condition. Plus of course he was very very unlucky that his head got struck like it did.
Look at 0.25 speed 0:50… look right above the antenna… it seems 2 smokes coming out the wood like a gun shoot and at the same moments both cameras have some fauilers… and after that he hitting that wall.. this would explain why it seems that he lost concessions… look up some images from his helmet.. you can see clearly a perfect round bullet hole… I mean it sounds really crazy but it’s there in the footage…
In Brazil chasing TC, Aida chasing TC. I think it had some type of anti-spin mod, it would of needed heaps of torque in the middle for 740HP to achieve those laps. This would of made it more prone to wheel spin, more then Williams, since it had less down-force and more torque when it beings accelerate. This is why other driver's said the car was at knife edge and spinning all over the place. At Imola Senna was in front, I suspect that corner is flat out 6th gear. I would stay steering failure. With the Benetton, since Senna's death is a sensitive subject, all the official information on the Benetton, has probably been left sealed for ever, I guess it could of been understood to have contributed to Senna's spin at Brazil, Aida crash. Makes you wonder if F1 just let the Benetton pass, as they didn't want spoil the season. They stated no driver aid's, but what ever they did to the engine would of been considered a driving aid, but somehow they got around the word's, I suspect F1 let it pass.
I'm a nascar fan and watch indy car and f1 sometimes. Senna car just WENT RIGHT LIKE THE CAR has a piece BREAK OFF. The lap before, at the same or around the spot he went off the track, his car had sparks which I thought was a mechanical failure. As I look on the internet about the track. Drivers were complaining about the surface of the track and thought the FIA rules were going to led into bad situations and wrecks.
He definitely didn't go off track the lap before. Watch again. Sparks were common and completely normal during those times, even the years before with the active suspension cars. Watch the 1992 German GP, for example, or Spa. Or any other race, really. But the bumps are there and they did add stress to the poorly improvised steering column. The corner is very easy and straightforward to take, but the mechanical stress is pretty heavy, pulling almost 4G.

Even modern F1 cars are throwing sparks when they hit bumps. At this track was very bumby. Senna's steering shaft broke because it was designed not strong enough to get more space for the legs. They did that change one or two races before... 😪
One of the saddest parts of this is that inside the car, race officials found a rolled up Austrian flag. Before this race, in the qualifiers, Austrian rookie Roland Ratzenburger died after hitting a concrete wall. Senna was planning on waving the flag during the victory lap in his honour if he won.

That's why he signed for Williams. Then, in 1993 Williams had adaptive suspensions (it was its most advanced feature) and it was a great car but they were banned in 1994...so the 1994 fw16 wasn't the big deal you saw the year before.
I'm Italian and there's a video when they play some interviews of Ayrton in that day before the race. He was complying about the suspensions and many other parts that were too weak according to him. I've gone to his statue and museum at Imola two weeks ago.
It's sad but maybe this is the destiny of every person that seek absolute perfection with every inch of their soul.

It is extremely upsetting, you are right. The Williams lot are such douches, whatever the cause of the crash. At least it was a mercifully quick death.
The downforce at the time was so drastic, with the tire pressures being low from the safety car slowing the field down. Was just a perfect storm of hitting the asphalt at top speed by bottoming out and losing control.
there was nothing wrong with the steering. senna went for a gamble with burned up front tires, wich made the underflow of the car fade down. he literaly had no steering because the airflow, just a few millimeters needed, got him stuck on a straight path. it was senna's addiction to win.
You can see the snap of oversteer which sends him off. A snapper steering column would sure just have seen him understeer off the track.
Senna strived for safety of the drivers and mentioned previously that someone would be injured seriously around there and he was the one to pass away due to the steering wheel snapping on him.
His skill was too great for it to be a driver error.

I was a young Schumacher fan at the time and I remember the moment seeing Senna go straight from Michael’s onboard. I got excited in that moment because I knew it meant Michael was going to take the lead. It still hurts to think that was my first thought even though I couldn’t have known how horrific this would be. I learned and grew a lot that day. RIP Ayrton.

It's called sportsmanship. On the moment, it's normal to feel joy, but then when you realize that a driver had been killed, you feel terrible for what you have done, but you couldn't know.
You look at this and only then appreciate how far safety has advanced since 1994. Of course, after this we thought F1 was already very safe, but Jules Bianchi was tragic (also due to brain injury) and the two marshalls. The crashes that Alonso, Lecrec and Ericsson suffered would have killed them or spectators in these old cars. Only now I think F1 is really safe enough (though if you get rear ended, you still have the potential to injure your back).

The brake pedal and accelerator pedal operation are only caused by the faint body. The racing car runs in the wall uncontrollably. If this theory is true, the question is just what it was like Senna's helmet. The answer could be given by the black box of the car, but it was removed from it before the car was seized, and a few seconds was removed from it. At first it was said that it was bad and there was no data on it. As the loss of signal caused by interference, the FOCA TV's internal video recording is also missing for a few seconds.
The helmet was burned recently.
All evidence has disappeared in a mysterious way.

@@marsenmoon I think what happened (and there's a lot of videos with a tracer on the yellow button on the wheel) is that the steering column was already partially snapped or at least was cracking as the race went on. And that Ayrton did have a snap of oversteer due to a slight lack of tyre pressure making the car bottom out more. But where the official story says that he corrected and ran out of road, I believe that the steering column snapped just as he steered into the slide. This explains why he doesn't even seem to attempt to turn after going off line. Had the steering column still been intact, he would have still hit the wall but there's no question he would have been able to alleviate the angle somewhat.
I always was unsure if car was too low or steering broke.. and first time watching again, pretty sure the steering did break.
i watched this crash live on tv. i got a 6 in school an friday (worst grade in germany) and on sunday i watched the race live on rtl and senna died.

There's no doubt in my mind that the steering column broke. He's turning left, yet when the car breaks away and goes straight you don't see his hands return to the straight position. It was steering failure all day long.

Those days they didn’t have the plank to make it safe to bottom out, if it was scraping that much nowadays in a corner it would be fine but back then the whole car would just slide on the undertray
Spark do only mean that the compression is very high. The floor of the car does simply touch the surface, while this is happening you lose lots of downforce, but increase the speed due to the stopped airflow which created downforce. You can see ih very often the Red Bulls, they are trying to get faster on the straight due to that.
The whole "bottoming out" thing is rubbish. Even if it did bottom out, airflow would be restored extremely quickly upon "un-bottoming" so steering inputs would be possible.... He had adequate downforce to brake heavily from 190~130, no downforce, no braking. Steering column failure.
@@robweeks3238 When the car bottomed out Senna turned into the slide which is why you see the car view not rotating anymore. When the car's grip was restored, Senna had the front wheels pointed into the turn, which then instantly veered the car right, and off the track.

Football and F1 were sports with succesful brazilians. But Senna held the status of a national hero here, he was someone who made it from a country that had been economically broken for several years prior. I don't know much about Clark's history, and I am heavily biased towards my country, so it would be an unfair comparison to make, but just think of it like this: when Senna's coffin came to São Paulo, 2 million people attended (or tried to) his funeral. It was heavily covered by the media, and he is to many brazilians the greatest sportsperson ever. Every Brazilian who watched that race remembers what they were doing that day.

One strange fact about this corner is that between 1987 and 1994 3 of the 4 big accidents that happened were Williams cars. In 87 Piquet crashed heavily then in 92 it was Patrese and in 94 of Senna died. The other accident was when Garhard Burger's Ferrari burst in to flames during the race in 1989.

i guess it's easy to look back and criticize knowing what we do now 20+ years later.
I guess the unbound tyre barriers of the day tended to catch a car coming in at a tight angle, and would actually make the deceleration worse. Probably thought it was better to deflect the car along the wall. Same reason Indycar and NASCAR persisted with unprotected concrete walls for so long.
The modern tyre barrier where it's all wrapped would be better, as would TecPro, or even the SAFER barrier used in the States.
And if they didn't make the run off area off concrete or asphalt and had grass or gravel that would have decelerates the car quicker which might off made the crash Less severe

It is obviously a steering failure. If you slow the footage down you can clearly see that he hits a mid corner bump which throws the car off balance. Small mid corner corrections are normal but you can see the exact moment when his steering blows because the front wheels don't correct back to the turn radius of Ayrtons hands on the wheel. Even if it wasn't a complete snap, a mid corner bump on a car thats riding too low can jolt parts loose and thus be the failure. His death was 100% not because he was driving too hard and aggressive. This is a racing team not setting up a car properly and refusing to admit any fault when it is clear that the mechanical failure of the car resulted in Senna's untimely death

The original footage ended just before the impact. It was already accused back then that one or some seconds got deleted by FOCA TV. The videos available on TH-cam now and in the Senna movie are shortened by another second or so for whatever ill reason. I did download the original footage in the end of the 90s, it's somewhere in my archive. However the resolution was pretty bad obviously since it's a Quicktime file from the mid-90s.

Gostaria de identificar um ponto que ninguém percebeu, ao menos nunca vi nenhum comentário citando. Todos falam que o mais plausível para o acontecido tenha sido a quebra da barra de direção. Mas note, no segundo que senna passa reto há um movimento na dianteira do carro para a esquerda , como se ele estivesse perdendo a traseira do carro. O movimento é bem rápido, mas se você olhar com atenção você verá. Pois bem, antes do acidente o carro de Senna passou pelo local da batida que correu na largada varias vezes, e talvez tenha passado por algum objeto perfurante. Se isso ocorreu e o pneu furado tenha sido o traseiro esquerdo, faz com que o pneu dianteiro direito fique mais alto e sem aderência, justamente o pneu que era responsável por manter o carro virando e acompanhando a curva. Logo concluo... Senna estava com pneus frios, e provavelmente o pneu traseiro esquerdo estava furado, fazendo com que a dianteira estivesse levantada e consequentemente sem aderência. Quando ele perde um pouco a traseira na curva, no movimento que eu citei, o pneu traseiro estava sem calibragem adequada e A consequência disso fez com que ele passasse direto para o muro. Quem acha que estou certo deixa um joia! Saudades do nosso ídolo!
@ 0.48 Left screen...sparks from under Senna's chassis just before he took on Tamburello. It is well documented that the track at SM was dangerously bumpy, add to that the steering column on Senna's fw16 had a somewhat botched extension weld to accomodate his requirements. Watching these clips over and over again, as a huge Senna fan maybe wanting all the answers as to why we really did lose him, my own personal conclusion can only point to the flat out speed towards Tamburello, hitting the bumpy track at that pace, and referring to the spark I mentioned, that the sheer force of hitting that not so smooth track may have well buckle the already, somewhat compromised, steering column, causing Senna to sadly lose control. My views may not be correct nor wrong...but they are something to ponder over.

I have long analyzed the video of the camera ok on board of senna before impact. Note 2 details that you can check. Number 1, as everyone can see, when taking the curve you can see senna's hand, part of the wheel and a yellow button, just before the accident the yellow button betrays the movement of the steering wheel, a movement that is noted is towards senna's body . Number 2, if you notice Senna's helmet you never look at the frame on the camera on board, and just when the wheel moves towards your body, the yellow button disappears from the frame and Senna's helmet appears a bit on the camera. That movement I think is caused by the inertia of exerting force on the steering wheel to take the curve, since like many of us if the G force makes your body push to the right, one will force (especially with the neck) to go to the opposite side. In this sense, let's imagine that we push someone with all our strength and from one second to another that person stands aside and takes off, the consequence is that you will leave with inertia and end up on the floor. If we apply this same principle imagining ourselves in Senna's place, we can easily say what was the cause of his death.
still watching this in FEB2024. It could only be a steering wheel shaft fail. Look how bumpy was the track at the moment he goes straight, also visible on Schumy camera. They said they soldered the steering wheel of senna's to mach his preference driving position or maybe because Senna was complaining about the car's steering. So this would mean the steering shaft would have a weak point and if you add to his a bumpy surface at high speed on a high speed corner with high G's loads... this is the result.

This onboard of Schumacher has been difficult to find over the years finally found it. It’s been deleted on YT over the years. It gives you a good view of what happened. Still can believe it that a piece of the suspension struck his head killed Senna and not the impact. Just makes you angry because of how close to surviving he could have been. Also in 2009 Ruben’s suspension spring hit Massa in the head and almost killed him. Crazy to think really that it almost happened to another Brazilian driver.

It’s obvious the steering column failed. Piquet said it himself. A driver hits the brakes only when they cannot steer the car properly. Even today, drivers first try to correct their line and if not they brake.
Senna being an experienced driver would first try to steer the car away from its vector, as shown by his head coming towards the left of the camera which shows effort. However he couldn’t do that due to the failure and hit the brakes.
It is no secret that Coulthard had a similar accident in winter testing as well.
Or, and I could be wrong. We saw his head there, perhaps, due to the sudden shift in g force when his car turned right at 190mph?

That lap 6 was the lap. Berger and Hill fell considerably behind... Senna was on it. Racing well beyond the car's limits.
I believe I have seen what caused the crash, before his car stopped steering his head dropped hard left, presumably pointing towards an injury or black out before the crash even happend
His head dropped the second the car started to do other things he wasn't asking it to do. In his mind he's turning left out the exit of Tamburello and probably already planning his positioning for the next bend.. until suddenly - something snaps - there's absolutely no way his body WOULDN'T react to that....just plot out the forces and it will make sense. It's important to remember that a professional racing driver, especially like Ayrton, can race at crazy speeds but still remain perfectly calm and relaxed...but being calm and relaxed at 200 mph doing what you always do.. suddenly something goes wrong. I bet you would have a reaction if for example you were riding your motorbike fast and something came across your path close in-front...your entire body will shock..probably to the point you have to pull over to calm down...it's the same thing here.

@@Haunteh I'm have zero clue where you are getting your information. Telemetry clearly shows that he was braking and braking hard. He went from 190 mph as he left the track to 135 mph two seconds later when he hit the wall. That's the best anyone could have asked for in that time. He definitely wasn't blacked out. His head drops because of g-force.
Why was this race allowed to go on after a fellow driver died just a day before?
The Race directors said that the Other pilot had died in the Hospital, thus continuing the Race, in fact he died on the Track, then the Race would have been Interrupted for Accident Investigation, but unfortunately the Greed of the Directors killed Ayrton.

If you have your mobile phone near of speakers before ring your phone you will experience some interruption. Considering that each team uses different frequencies to communicate with the team. While I do not believe the Williams team will ever formally acknowledge it, not now and certainly not in 50 or 100 years time. I genuinely believe deep down Sir Frank Williams, Adrian Newey and Patrick Head know the adjustment to the steering column before the race which has been well documented as very poorly done, was the catalyst for this sad event which unfolded on that tragic day in Imola 1994.

Why were there no tyre walls here? I've read that the concrete wall had to be there because of the river behind it, but surely some padding would have helped a lot?
F1 was a different time back then in terms of safety. It only took this accident for them to clamp down on this sort of stuff.
These were times of continuous improvement but sadly for Ayrton, the necessary improvements came too late. 20 years prior to this and the chequered flag would be waved my a man on track only a few feet away from the cars doing life threatening speeds. I remember seeing clips of Sterling Moss with a cigarette in his hand whilst doing his winners parade lap. That simply wouldn't happen today. The reason we see tyre barriers today are the result of tragic incidents such as this
All caused by a combination of tyres which had lost pressure during the safety laps and Senna pushing too hard with a car in that condition. Plus of course he was very very unlucky that his head got struck like it did.

You can see the broken steering wheel column outside his car when the doctors are inspecting him. There are no questions.

In Brazil chasing TC, Aida chasing TC. I think it had some type of anti-spin mod, it would of needed heaps of torque in the middle for 740HP to achieve those laps. This would of made it more prone to wheel spin, more then Williams, since it had less down-force and more torque when it beings accelerate. This is why other driver's said the car was at knife edge and spinning all over the place. At Imola Senna was in front, I suspect that corner is flat out 6th gear. I would stay steering failure. With the Benetton, since Senna's death is a sensitive subject, all the official information on the Benetton, has probably been left sealed for ever, I guess it could of been understood to have contributed to Senna's spin at Brazil, Aida crash. Makes you wonder if F1 just let the Benetton pass, as they didn't want spoil the season. They stated no driver aid's, but what ever they did to the engine would of been considered a driving aid, but somehow they got around the word's, I suspect F1 let it pass.

I'm a nascar fan and watch indy car and f1 sometimes. Senna car just WENT RIGHT LIKE THE CAR has a piece BREAK OFF. The lap before, at the same or around the spot he went off the track, his car had sparks which I thought was a mechanical failure. As I look on the internet about the track. Drivers were complaining about the surface of the track and thought the FIA rules were going to led into bad situations and wrecks.
He definitely didn't go off track the lap before. Watch again. Sparks were common and completely normal during those times, even the years before with the active suspension cars. Watch the 1992 German GP, for example, or Spa. Or any other race, really.
But the bumps are there and they did add stress to the poorly improvised steering column. The corner is very easy and straightforward to take, but the mechanical stress is pretty heavy, pulling almost 4G.

Even modern F1 cars are throwing sparks when they hit bumps. At this track was very bumby. Senna's steering shaft broke because it was designed not strong enough to get more space for the legs. They did that change one or two races before... 😪
