How the 888 helped me sell a lot of audio interfaces - hint it was Digidesign. BTW - Correction - I think you could buy other Digidesign interfaces back then like the 882 and the 1622.
Apogee use to be a great company. I did so much business with them. I even had conversation about future products with them. I proposed an external box to run plug ins like a UAD system before there was UAD. Everything changed when they hired a new national sales manager and they started to cut off the small dealers. They realized that was a big mistake a year later but it was too late. Small dealers were really annoyed with them by then. I was one of those small dealers ;-) I really like the AD8000 and the AD16X and DA16X. Soft clipping was very cool.
I set up an AD-8000 demo for the sales group at Westlake Audio & was pretty blown away. That was the moment I realized I would not need to buy a Studer A827. I'm still loving my Symphony Mk1.
It's amazing to me how speakers that sound SO bad, the NS10s, became the standard. I can't remember what the UNCA studio had besides the NS10s but the other monitors sounded SO much better. No one ever used or checked anything with the Yamahas.
Yep Apogee AD8000 & Big Ben for the win! Those buttons got real finicky over time though - LOL. That I/O would have lasted a lot longer if compatibility wasn't an issue. (DIgidesign's walled garden) Great memories thanks!!
Hi! Thin and harsh? Wow... I thinks it sounds very warm and adds a nice color, way more than today’s interfaces. Well, I think it’s taste and colors. The 8800 is fantastic too! I love them both. I’d love that the 888 is thunderbolt. I’m planning to get the Symphony Mkii. Cheers! ✌️
The 888 is thunderbolt? I think you are referring to a different interface. And you mean the AD8000 by apogee not the 8800...right? Unless you are referring to another interface.
I heard these bad boys are the secret of the sauce on todays records.. Some say they can go for as much as $35,000 a unit! Ill sell mine for $5000! My loss!
I remember those days. I could never figure out how it could sound both dull and harsh at the same time.
Yeah
I really loved all the apogee stuff back then. I had the AD16X and DA16X that had the soft clipping feature built in. Pretty cool boxes

Exactly I was thinking about that soft clipper, it’s still an awesome clippper to this day 👌🏼

A great audio interface makes a big difference

I was never a fan of Yamaha NS10...I sold a bunch of KRK 703 because of the Yamahas.

@@preciseaudioblog The 888 connects with a Pci card, thunderbolt didn’t exist back then.
I remember the 888. So many studios, albums... and all of them recorded on ADATs. So many albums lost. Those adat tapes do not work anymore.
I have a case of ADAT tapes of Boyz II Men sessions that nothing can be done with them. Pity
@@fantastictalesofproaudio2391how many years did you have to transfer them to a more permanent format?
You should transfer them as soon as possible. Luckily there are places like George Blood Audio in Philadelphia that will transfer them for you.
Just pulled my 32 year old tapes... They all worked except the small amount that was a lil Err_7 I store them up in a 125° attic too!
George, is this your TH-cam channel? Loving all of this. Keep it coming!
Yes it is I - George! I have a bunch more stories coming. 35 years in the business creates some interesting situations.
