Listen to his interview after the game. He explained why he drops the stick so much.

Why are the Leafs so much better when Marner is the de facto team leader than when Matthews is the team leader/de facto team leader?
And 29:30 in, the excuses start. Last year when Marner was playing on a sprained ankle the standard was, no excuses, if you put on the uniform you need to perform. Matthews hasn't performed at a level worthy of the highest paid player in the league. No excuses. While I'm at it, why don't other teams teams rally together and perform better when their star is out. The Oilers don't suddenly get much better when McDavid is out. Nor do the Avalanche get better when MacKinnon is out. In fact, no other team does better when their star is out. But the Leafs are an awesome team when Matthews is out, curiously they are also a brutal team when Marner is out.

The team plays insanely well without Morgan Riely in the team. They didn't play horribly without Marner last year. The only thing that got worse was the PK because other stars simply didn't participate in it.
Look. Matthews has 11 points in 13 games, who cares if he's not scoring that much? Defensively he's always good and he has been a contributor offensively.
I get the Marner love, and I only dislike a very small part of Marner's game(shoot the damm puck. You got a great shot). But Matthews isn't the problem lol
Third line has been the issue for a good stretch now. Not many points, don't defend exceptionally well, etc. First line and Second are doing their part. So is the fourth line. What is the Third line's identity? What are they supposed to do?

@@peacebringer8 Rielly isn't anywhere near comparable to Matthews or Marner. Yea, they strung together a few games were they won without Marner but the record is they aren't a playoff team when Marner is out, while they have been better without Matthews than with him.
11 points in 13 games isn't remotely close to performing at the highest paid player in the league level. He isn't even in the top 50 for points. The defense is good, yes it is, but that isn't worth 13+ million a year.
The Leafs are better without Matthews than with him so maybe he isn't the solution either.
I do agree that the third line isn't good enough for the playoffs. I would like to see a Matthews line built around Knies and Matthews, a Nylander line, built around Tavares and Nylander and a Marner line built around Marner and Domi. Fill in the winger gaps as needed. I would also like a Marner PP and a Matthews PP and PP1 is the one that scored last. Let's have a little friendly competition.

Hey guys! THEY ARE GETTING IT! Berube's system: strong play, physicality and defense first. It only works when EVERYONE buys in. Injuries happen, the system just keeps rolling. Not dependent on any ONE player.

Let’s not get carried away it’s only been 2 games, this team always go back old bad habits after playing well for a game or 2. Calm down leafs fans we get too excited after a good game. Why can’t this team ever go on a 10 game run like Winnipeg or Florida last year. The team get satisfied after a couple wins then play a stinker just so we don’t get our hopes too high.
