Jessi Gold, MD, MS is the Chief Wellness Officer of the University of Tennessee System and an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She works clinically as an outpatient psychiatrist at university health services, and also writes and is a regular expert in the media on mental health. She has been featured in, among others, The New York Times, The Atlantic, NPR, PBS NewsHour, The Washington Post, and SELF. Her first book, HOW DO YOU FEEL? One Doctor’s Search for Humanity in Medicine, will be out in October 2024 from Simon Element. Dr. Gold is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. and M.S in Anthropology, the Yale School of Medicine, and Stanford University Department of Psychiatry, where she served as chief resident.
Summary
We have spoken more recently about the burnout and mental health impact of working in healthcare, but we haven't often looked at its' impact on us, mental health professionals. This talk will define the terms moral injury and burnout, and describe the impact of COVID-19 on our existing poor baseline. It will discuss the barriers getting help in medical culture, include self-stigma, and along with data and some tangible tips, Dr. Gold will discuss her own experience as a burned out burn out expert.
Objectives: The activity is designed to help the learner:
1. Define moral injury and burnout
2. Describe the impact of COVID-19 on the mental of mental health professionals
3. Summarize the culture of healthcare and how that prevents help seeking for mental health needs
4. Detail one story of self-stigma, and tips to thrive in a broken culture.
