Back in the day, there was a different (unrelated, I believe) company called Aurora that primarily sold slot cars, but they also sold N and HO trains. However, their HO trains were actually made by Pemco. The company was around from the 50's to the 80's - but they only sold their HO trains in the 80's at the same time as Pemco did.
Being old enough to remember Aurora models, slot cars and trainsets kind of had me doing a bit of a double take on an Aurora SD60 until I realized it was obviously a different Aurora. True crawl test I came across by accident years ago while testing aa Athearn tuning job on the club layout. Had it running as quiet and smooth as the high end Stewart's of the day and for whatever reasons forgotten to the ravages of CRS had stopped the locomotive and was doing something with a pencil I ended up setting across the tracks about 2 or 3 inches ahead of where I stopped the locomotive. Some minutes later reached for the pencil and felt the locomotive against the pencil and realized I'd not closed the throttle completely and the locomotive was actually creeping so slowly it took several minutes to close the gap between it and the pencil. Actually took the time and you could see the wheels turning very very slowly.
Omg! SMT i was the one that brought it up in the live stream lol im so glad you got one of these! Also you did miss the working rock lights, the interior cab light aswell as the instrument panel lights and the working radiator fans
Thanks for the suggestion. I wasn't able to get the features you mentioned operational - probably my lack of DCC knowledge rather than a defective unit.
@SMTMainline I know f11 would be the rad fans, some times they need alittle tap to get going, for the others I forget. Really just need to go through the functions in the dark and you will see it. My favorite is the light up dashbord in the cab
Awesome Harrison, you finally got one! But you have only scratched the surface of what this locomotive can really do. The main one being the functional cooling fans, which can be activated by pressing F11 on the DCC controller. The model also features lighted gauges in the cab, lighted front walkway light, ground lights, plus a host of sounds. Also, it seems the max on this locomotive is somewhere in the 45-50 car range (I tested mine on the club layout last year, and that seemed to be the ceiling for this locomotive), depending on weight and rolling capabilities on the individual cars. The decals are for moderizing the locomotive to resemble the SD60F near the end of its tenure on CN (this according to modelers such as Track Side Mike). Also DO NOT loose the little baggie that came with the locomotive, those are the spare bearing caps in case you happen to loose one off the locomotive.
Thanks for all the info. I had heard the fans and cab lights were operational but I couldn’t get ether to work. I’m not super experienced with DCC so I’m probably not doing something right.
@SMTMainline there should be a list of functions in the manual which should cover all 28 functions. Unfortunately, I don't recall which function turns on the cab lights off the top of my head, though.
This is the first time hearing about Aurora, i looked them up while watching and 2/3 of the 3 locomotive types they sell are already sold out! I hope for nothing but the best for those guys as seeing what else they do will certainly be exciting!
omg, love those SD60 series. The Canadian F version (F for the full cowl body instead of the standard walkway body) always impressed me. Pulling 20 cars seems about right even for the real 60 series units. You are a BRAVE young man. I would be too scare to open this up after a $300 price. Remind me to call you to my side when one of my locomotives are fighting me! lol.
I did do an extended look at the Aurora Miniatures website and I notice they go the extra mile in details. Their plug door boxcars have separate applied door access bars and latches. Other stuff on car ends as well. When I saw their rotating fans I was blown away. No pun intended. I saw on youtube a modeler had managed to make his fan blades move from inactive to a slow build up to spinning strongly via his DCC module. So cool. I think it was an SD40.
Nice loco you got there. The detail is amazing. The lights are bright led's, very clean look. The couplers, MU hoses, cooling fans, trucks and everything else are very detailed. This was a good purchase. From Texas.........Hook 'em Horns.
That's one nice looking unit. I'll definitely be checking that company out. This is the first I've heard of them . Looks pretty good but for $300 I wouldn't expect any less!
Same for me. I still have my HO Aurora Model Motoring (along with Atlas and Tyco) from the 1960's. It's all been in a box for over 50 years now! One day, I hope to set it up again.
If I’m not mistaken, the locomotives fans should be animated, the should spin, and there should be in-cab lighting. SMT, you should check what each function does, this SD60F is a really nice locomotive
Cool to see you got one. Got one myself. In terms of detail, they're worthy of the praise they've gotten, especially with the operating fans. Operating wise, they're OK, not as good as a scaletrains model. But overall, great kickstarter for their NA models.
I think it's impressive for a fairly new manufacturer. I ever since I filmed this video I've found the speed a bit inconsistent with the amount of throttle but other than that it seems to perform well.
@@SMTMainline This is a well known issue which is due to a design flaw in the drivetrain of these models. This issue lead to quite the controversy with two hobby shops being kicked out of the Aurora dealer network (one of them was publicly shamed by Aurora on social media). Aurora has said you can get replacement trucks for no charge (not sure if that's still the case). I got one of these when they first arrived at OVR and had the same problems. Given the model itself was also disappointing in many ways and was frankly quite the failure, I didn't trust Aurora so I eventually shipped it off to a hobby store in the hopes of getting it fixed. I just got it back a few days ago with the replacement trucks installed and the motor replaced and it no longer has any issue maintaining speed. If it hadn't been fixed, it would've had the unwanted title of the first almost brand new model being listed up for sale.
Wow! I really want one. That is impressive how well that thing looks and works. The current most powerful locomotive I have is just an Atlas GE c30-7 with minimal detail. That SD60F looks great!
Hi again Harrison i looked up the locomotive in this video ad the SD60F's were built by EMD and are a six axle diesel electric locomotive intended for drag freight. They started production in 1984 and production ended in 1995. i still can't wait till you run all your ho scale steam locomotives and i think it would also be cool if you ran all your diesels.
Great video. I would love to have one of those locomotive's. BTW If you push F11 than some radiator fans turn on in the rear, it's a real cool feature. And one more thing CONGRATULATIONS ON 103K🎉!!!
Nice review mate. For a new manufacturer that's quite a nice model they have produced. It will be interesting to see what other products they have and what they release for the future.
Cool locomotive Harrison, I went to one of my favorite hobby shops today and found a f45 in the sante fe paint scheme for 30 bucks still haven't tested it though 😂
Some of them had issues with the drive, I forget what exactly but they had trouble ay low speeds. yours seems to be a good runner. congrats on the nice draper taper.

Nice engine! Also, just wanted to say, you should check out that thing's actual pulling power. I once had a Walthers Mainline SD50 that managed 46 cars (all plastic) without slipping on track with a tighter radius than yours, and that drive on your engine looks like it could, too. I think your engine is capable of more than 30 plastic cars (on level track, that is).
$300.00 is a little too steep for me. Most I've ever paid for an engine was recently and I paid $120.00 for an RS-3 Central of Georgia. It was an Atlas engine. Cheers from eastern TN
Not a problem. I am no further along with DCC than you are and perhaps even less. Hey Harrison, I left the hobby of model trains, but I’m getting back into it. Hey, I'm a big fan and I am sort of new to the model trains. I was wondering if you are able to repair my gs4 american freedom train, the tender wires are messed up. There are 3 that are off, I saw the video you made a while back, I was wondering if u can help me get the train running again.
I no longer do repairs that involve shipment but I'm happy to give advice. If you bought the loco new it should be under warranty, otherwise the metal pins in the socket must be removed and soldered back onto the wires.

I'm not sure how to take the pins out and I don't have a soldering gun
Did the fans work on the radiators?
They did, I just didn't know how to activate them at the time.
