    In my younger years, I worked at discount tires and found the whole secret to changing tires by hand or machine is the drop center of the rim. Always make sure the opposite side of the tire you are working on is pushed down to the center of the rim thus giving you enough lack as possible. Trying to force the bead on or off without doing this separates the pros from the amateurs. I have changed car tires with motorcycle tire irons without any problems.

    Good video,Here's a tip for you.After you remove the tire,take only the rim,put it on the balancer... mark the the light spot on the rim with a felt marker.then lay the TIRE ON TOP OF THE RIM,using one of the painted dots on the tire as a reference,and rotate the tire to see if you can improve the balance before you actually mount it to the rim.All tires have a heavy spot,rims a usually fair well balanced. It works for me.Sometimes you can eliminate most of the weights.

      Some tires have a dot indicating the lightest part of the tire. Put this near the valve stem.

    It's refreshing to see the trials and tribulations of a first-time attempt at dismounting and mounting a tire. So many tire-changing clips show the process to look easy, which makes us noobs think it's easier than it really is. Thank you.

    The reason the bead breaker slipped the first couple times is because it was pushing back more than it was pushing down. It should probably be repositioned to the middle hole for that size of tire.

    I bought one of these last year and all i can say is it works. It does the job it's built for. Yes it's hardwork but you do feel a sense of accomplishment after doing it.
    Just a heads up to others who don't have an air blaster and can't get the bead to sit right. Use the tried and tested fire method. Spray some easy start fluid around the inside of the tyre, over the edge of the rim and ignite. Give the tyre a little kick if it dosn't "Pop" right away and then fill with air immediately.
    I've done countless tyre's and honestly unless you're on the motorway a lot balancing is not a huge issue.

    I suggest moving your bead breaker pin to the hole closest to where it hinges, that way it keeps the breaker part pushing in toward the rim .

    did a great job. You look just like me doing it for the first time. had the same exact set up and it was a challenge . the drop center of the rim was also my greatest challenge mounting the new tires.

    Gotta have that little yellow thingy tool lol 😂 I just got one of the manual tire changers and it took me a few attempts at the mount process but I finally got it down. You never got discouraged and gave up and that's something a lot of people need to learn. Great work!!

    My Harber Freight model 69686 broke down in two ways with the first use. The bead breaker arms bent badly and the welds broke on the X that sits on the rim. If I didn't have an arc welder it would be unusable. Also, the mount/dismount bar damages rims and was also quite difficult to use. I added a brace to the bead breaker arms, properly welded the X, and use a thick plastic ring under the X to protect the rim. I also greased the threads of the tube that screws everything down. The process of mounting tires was still too difficult, so I bought a professional duckhead and made a bar to hold it. Now, it's easier, faster, and doesn't damage rims or tires. I started out cheap but paid the price in repairs and modifications to get a good working item. Also, it's a good idea to clean your rims. My aluminum mags had slow leaks until I cleaned and polished the bead seat area.

    Back in the 1970's that was the only tire changer we had in the small shops You are the first DIYer that i have seen try to use the installer bar correctly. It take a bit of practice and strength in the arms but you did have the right idea just try to stay with the same direction with the bar because that has to do with it working properly when installing new tire.

      @@Engineerboy100 I just ordered the same looking unit because i am sick of paying over 30 buck a tire to change my tire and for what it would cost for 4 tire changes, it pays for the changer and i still have the changer for next time. These days people have to start buying and doing to get a head and buying good quality manufactured tooling is a must. next will be a manual bubble balancer.

    I am so glad that you stuck with it until you got the job done. I know too many people mostly the Young generation that would have just walked away and pay someone to do the rest of it. Whenever I run into a situation I will normally come back into the house drink a bottle of water and rethink what I was doing and sometimes check the internet out to find a better way. Like yourself I never walk away from a challenge.

    I have the bubble balancer and a dynamic spin balancer. The bubble balancer (2 dimensional static balance) will work on narrow wheels with very little offset (2 dimensional wheels), where you can split the weights to each side of the wheel. Bubble balancer will not work on wide wheels with a significant offset. Reason being is simple, big offset wheels will have a lower center of gravity when on the bubble balancer than the bubble balancer needle point. This low CG on wide or offset wheels causes the bubble balance to be relatively ineffective and appear to balance easily. Having tested on 275/40/ZR18 tires on alum wheels with a large offset, the bubble will change every time and never be the same. Check, take the wheel off the bubble, spin it 90 or 180 and put it back on, rebalance, bubble will be in the center with different weights and locations. The spin balancer (3 dimensional dynamic balance) is essential for wide tires and wheels with offsets (3 dimensional wheels). If a cross section of your wheel and tire looks like a very narrow rectangular box or close to it where the bubble point is in the center of the box, the bubble will be fine. If the cross section of your wheel looks like a square box and the bubble point is way off the center of the box, you need a dynamic spin balance. Narrow steel wheels, bubble is ok. Wide alloy wheels, gotta spin them.

    I bought one of these and used it on my 18 inch wheels and it worked perfectly. I was told by many that it will not work on wheels larger than 16 inches too. They LIED!!! Make sure to use enough lube and know what you're doing and you will love this $$$ saving tool. I wish I made a video of me replacing 2 of my tires because it worked so much better than most of these videos. I will the nest time I use it.

      i have balanced 20 inch wheels on this same unit .. !! The problem with the tire changer is anything 50 series or below cant be done on this unit ... They are too stiff ...

    Hey Clint, that was an honest review and actually gave the viewer a first hand look at what they might expect on their first tire change with this thing. I bought this same device and my first tire change was pretty darn close to the experience you had. It is called a _"manual"_ tire changer for a reason though. Is it worth $39.95?? You bet! Having something besides your workbench to change and hold a tire is with the money right there, even if you end up using a tire iron to pop the cork. But like in your later comments, you actually figure out how to make it work even better as you use it. Very nice of you to put your first try out there for all to see. Great video work too!

    Very good job, and as you mentioned in the beginning of the video, you were a tire technician when in college. And I like your commentary, I start watching your video when I bought a gold 95 obd1 corolla wagon for my father (same one you have/had) in one of your 7afe rebuild. And my wagon #2 cylinder has 0 compression.

      @@Engineerboy100 yeah, unfortunately. Sorry for the late reply, I've been looking for a 7afe replacement engine past week. I did dry and wet compression tests and on #2 have 0 psi on both. It sound no compression when crank so I am sure it's the valves. Do you think it's easy to just swap out and put another engine or to rebuild the head only (in consideration both cost and time)?

      @@donep3 Easier to swap out engine ... but I would swap out top end for better longevity, when swapping out a used engine, unless it's rebuilt, you never know what you're getting, you could be putting the same thing in that you're taking out or close to it ... or even WORSE :o

    Love your tenacity. Noticed some negative comments, but I think you did alright for a first timer. Pay no attention to the Haters! Low profile tires are harder to mount - less sidewall = less flexibility.

    I have changed dozens and dozens of tires on this same changer. When you break the bead use a little 2 pound sledge to keep the lip close to the bead while pushing down. Once you push it down if the bead doesnt break turn the tire slightly and repeat.

    Definitely a technique to learn. Now that I've used mine quite a bit, I can remove four tires and install four new ones in about half an hour or less.

    The issue you were having with the mounting end of the mount/demount bar is that you were not positioned correctly. Yes, the hook goes on the lip of the rim but the tire bead goes on the flat part of the mount head, which means that the tire bead must be above the lip of the rim as it runs across the face of the mount end. You were positioned where the bead had already crossed below the rim lip.
    The bead must be above the rim in the direction of travel (leading) and below the lip of the rim on the trailing side. It will fall under the lip of the rim on the trailing side as you turn it. Angling the demount end of the bar up pulls the bead past the edge of the rim lip allowing it to fall under the rim on the trailing side.
    To get it started you simply position the hook on the rim lip, position the bead on the flat face, then push the bead down on the side opposite the direction you intend to travel. Pull it down as far around on that side as you can before lifting the bar so that it will be tight and pull the opposite bead into the center of the rim. That same tightness will pull the trailing bead down under the lip of the rim as it trails off the mount head.

    I was very happy to see someone having almost as much trouble as I had. Only took me 3 1/2 hours to get a tire off, put a patch in it, then re-mount it using this tool. I only bent my rim and the pry bar a little bit, busted the little glass window on my air compressor's valve, and completely ruined a pair of jeans. I'm thinking the only way it could have been worse would have been if I had got hurt, which fortunately I didn't. I'd rate my experience as nearly a complete disaster.

    You are right about watching the other end of the tire needing to always be down in the deepest part of the rim. It has a tendency to keep riding back up during the process which makes it way harder to lip the bead over the edge at the pry bar.

    Just curious, are you still using your manual tire changer. If you are, you should make an updated video showing what you learned over the years. This machine does work great when you've gained experience and patience. You did have some very good advice for the newcomer 😊

    best way to not scratch or damage the rim edge is simply to turn the rim upside down with the face pointing downwards. Just cut a hole in a rubber mat and place it on the top surface of the harbor freight tire changer. When working on the backside it doesn't matter if you get some minor scratches

    I've been using that tire changer for the last 25yrs. I'm fast. I put my changer on a 4ftx4ftx 3/16 piece of steel so I can move it around. I love my bubble balancer to. Before you air it up, sit it on the balancer so you can spin the tire and rim opposite direction to get dead center sometimes with no weight. I like your video

    Move the bead breaker to another hole and get a better angle on it.

    I just did the same thing yesterday literally and I can say yours went better than mine. I have 10" wide 15 rims that I was installing some 30x9.5x15 on and man oh man . The hardest part for me was getting the old tire off ,I had to literally cut the old tire off . Installation was ok with the exception of feeling like I was stretching a bicycle tire over a tractor rim. I couldn't use the bar to install it because it kept slipping off. I ended up installing it with tire spoon and the bar but by stretching ,not by letting it circle around ,although I scratched and dinged my rims up pretty good . Inflating was another problem. In the end I used a spray bottle and a lil gasoline a long stick with a lit rag and booooommmmm! They took air. I was tired , mad and darn near ready to fight that tire changer, and the people who made it lol but more than likely all the errors were me as usual.

    good video, but i found its easier to dismount the tire if you dont spray the tire and rim with soapy water. It keeps the blade from slipping off the tire as you try to break the bead.

      Gotta polish my technique, but I didn't want to sugarcoat the process. That said these tire are really stiff and a little wide, your average "normal " size tire will be much easier, say something like the tires on a stock Corolla or Camry ;)

    No need soap lube for debeading, agree one comment. Only to mount the tire. BIG THUMBS UP on the wood block for protection, I hated the bat tool to mount the tire, love old day ones.

    Send me those used tires! I'd still be using them till totally bald. Very expensive tires. Still using spoons only.     Breaking the bands in the the tire and you need to add a piece of pipe slider Raleigh way to spin around on to hold the ball in place why you sliding around put it on it will help

    Clint, have you mounted/demounted additional tyres? If so, how well has the Harbour Freight Tool held up? Does it have a long term durability for repeated tyre changes?

      I have not, but I plan too and I am working on finding a way to make the bar safer for nice wheels. I've seen a few options and I'll make another video once I have an acceptable improvement.

      I used mine quite a few times it tends to get beat up more on the all terrain off road tires. Especially in the winter. I almost broke it on my plow truck tire. Had to cut the bead.

    good to know in apocalypse situation but for now i think its easier to take it to the garage after all what is it going to save me 100 bucks? At first you have to invest in the machine and the balancer. So from all practical reasons it's too labour intensive. Maybe the wheel balancer might be a good investment to quickly check the balance vs taking it in.

      We weight the tire first to see where we are, sometimes you don't have to remove anything.

    How would it go if you put the rim on the changer upside down when you're removing the tyre with the long bar, would that make any damage done to the rim on the inside and not visible once the wheel's fitted back on car? Cheers

      No you can't do that, look at the video at 13:00 minutes in and it is explained why you can't turn the rim over.

      Motorcycle rim protectors is what I use for the aluminium wheels. I had them & the tire irons for my bikes. Get alot of them to cover that last area that hard to pry on.

    I purchased one. Tried it on my suv tires 245. 75. 17. Would not even break bead. Its only good for small car tires if i could have broke bead maybe.

    You have to learn how to lay the rim on the bead breaker on the bottom side, that's what the ridge is for.

    If you have the time, leave your tires out in the sun to warm them up. They are more flexible and easier to work with.

    I have one of those, I'm a 70 year old DIY, and it really gives me a workout 😓 no joke. Their charging $14.00 + to mount a tire on an SUV. Then there's $12.00 to balance it. That's my next buy,....... a "Wheel Balancer"

    Harbor freight needs to redo that device where it can lock the wheel so it won't spin on ya as you try to run the bar around the bead of the tire. Anyway thank you for the video and it was well done buddy. Thumbs up on the video and take care buddy. 👍

    Yeah... that little knob end on the bar to put the tire on really sucks. I found it easier to just use two pry bars. The stand is good for removing tires though. Thanks for the vid.
