As a black guy, I really think Fisher Tiger and the story surrounding all of the fishman is incredibly well written. I've met people like Hoardy, Arlong, and Otohime across many walks of life. What Oda did with this part of One piece was brilliant. I know that there are many other people and groups that have gone through the horrors of slavery and are still feeling the effects of its many different forms to this day, but he's written it in such a way that is nuanced, but easily digestible and realistic. The cycle of hatred is real and needs to be broken.
It also stems into Japan's own history of isolationism, and the relationship it had both with natives of Japan who often were explained away as yokai or oni because the Chinese born men and women that colonized Japan didn't know what to make of them for several centuries. Even in modern day there's a level of prejudice between Japanese and almost any tourist especially American, India, and Chinese / Hong Kong. You see this vividly in anime though we often don't think much of it. Characters like Bandit Keith in yugioh, Agni in Black Butler, and really the entirety of Hetalia show the stereotypes Japan has for just about everyone including themselves. That being said Japan's prejudices are often not spoken out loud and instead are more internalized and spread via gossip and so on.
That last line is honestly something I hope actually happens. As a white dude it makes me sick to my stomach seeing ignorant ass white people being racist towards not only black individuals but also others as well. It's those types of people that makes me think humanity really does have some scum walking among us and I wish it wasn't that way
Also Hordi's insanity and cruelty is how people act when they are mainly told about the evil rather than actually experiencing it. Fisher Tiger had a far more nuanced view of the world cause he actually experienced the world. Hordi saw a few pirates being assholes but that was about the end of the things he experienced and it also didn't seem that important. I feel that is also true of real life. SJW's are usually not the ones who actually experienced cruelty but the ones who were told about evils. Fisher tiger also didn't lower himself to attacking fishmen associated with the world government or random pirates or anything. He went after the targets that actually would make a difference even if it was dangerous. Also what Fisher tiger was doing was actually something that was revenge and was something that greatly annoyed the WG. With Hordi capturing other pirates and burning down fishmen houses doesn't really hurt the WG at all. Even Arlong, as spiteful as he was, was a lot more rational and moderate. Sure he believed in fishmen pride but he still showed decent enough respect for the navy and while he was cruel to Nami he did still brand her with his sign. I think if Hordi knew Nami actually carried the symbol once he would have been furious. But Arlong didn't spend all his time just getting angry in the Fishmen district. He actually went out into the world and saw a lot more of it.

Koala and Nami have a few things in common. Both were humans in fish-men crews, both were forced to wear their crew's mark and ended up with a new permanent mark to replace a former one. But while Nami had an overall negative view on Fishmen, Koala had a positive one.
I wonder how Koala reacted when she learned that her village sold out Fisher Tiger. Even if it was to save her, I can see her being incredibly pissed and feeling betrayed by that. Maybe she even carries that guilt to this day and thinks that she was the cause of the Sun Pirates fracturing.
The most admirable part of his finale is that even though he cannot love humans he decided to not to spread the hatred to the next generation because he recognises the only hope in the future is on them
One of the best and most important characters in the series. His story is sad as hell but it resonates so deeply. Fisher Tiger climbing the Red Line with his barehands will never not be the most badass events in OP history. Fantasy racism is so easy to screw up, especially when you're parallels are so on the nose, but One Piece manages to tell the story so damn well it makes me feel genuinely seen. It's what makes it so fucking awesome that Jinbei's on the crew now, this whole thing comes full circle from Arlong Park. Plus his name is Fisher Tiger, c'mon that's just sick as hell.

What makes Fisher Tiger's struggle and the whole Fishman-Human relations conflict so realistically written is that, despite being the forerunner for changing people's opinion of Fishmen, not even Fisher Tiger could escape his own predisposed views. This kind of thing is not an overnight change, hell it's not even a one lifetime change.

Fisher Tiger’s feat of scaling the Red Line is impressive and all, but can we talk about Luffy scaling a snowy mountain with his bare hands, no coat, and during a snow storm while he’s carrying Nami and Sanji? And that was pre timeskip Luffy.
@@KingDreams I don’t know about that, Fisher Tiger was a Fishman. Which according to Arlong, they are 10x as strong as humans from birth. Whilst Luffy, a 17 yr old human. Is able to climb a mountain in the worst possible conditions. I think if you add on to the fact of what Tiger did *after* he climbed the red line, it’s definitely more impressive.
Thanks Matt for doing this video. This character means a lot to me, and I’m glad people don’t forget his story. One of the best Oda had penned in the manga. I’m scared of needles, but I’ve always said the first tattoo I’m getting is fisher tigers sun on my back and then Whitebeards Jolly Roger on my chest. Already subscribed so best I can do is a like!
Fisher Tiger is basically the Harriet Tubman of the One Piece world. Ending Black History Month with a discussion about him is the perfect way to do so.
This is my favorite One Piece character video that you've done. You did a fantastic job dissecting and analyzing Tiger's character and the amount of depth you give is always amazing Tekking.
Another thing it has is that usually the most extreme ones are the ones that have heard of cruelty or only weakly experienced it. Fisher tiger, Jimbei and even Arlong to an extent were far more moderate and nuanced than Hordi was cause they saw more of the world. Also one thing that unfortunately was never really brought up is that Hordy's view of Arlong is not all that accurate. He believed in Fishmen supremacy but he wasn't on any kind of crusade or anything. He was basically just a mini yonko. Living the life of luxery. He didn't seem to have any real ambition and while he viewed humans as inferior he didn't have issues making exceptions. He was respectful enough towards the marines when they came for their bribe money and while he was cruel to Nami he did employ her and even gave her his symbol. Hordi kept many slaves but he didn't grant any of them membership to his crew. Arlong just seemed like more of a pragmatist than idealist. Fishmen supremacy for him was just a fact to take advantage of and nothing more.
Interesting timing to come out with a video about Fisher Tiger, since he was always compared to Malcolm X, and Malcolm X's assassination was on 21 February.
Great video. I think fisher tiger is the most underrated character in the show, not only good story but also he did things that even crazier than SH. He's stronger than jinbei so I won't be surprised if he would have been yonko/first commander level if he had survived. His story with releasing the slaves is the craziest thing I have ever heard in OP, how the hell did a single man went to the most important place in the world(that is publicly known) like a boss and returned alive? I won't be surprised if he was the most wanted man in the world or that dragon helped him(and thus get that title). Something weird in that story and I can't wait to know more about him.
Hey tekking, this isn’t an easy topic to cover but I noticed the serious tone you’ve had for it. It really got the message and tone across this table. And the intro to frog facts is definitely the cherry on top. Amazing video 10/10
This is one of the backstories Im most curious about: what happened to Koala after she was brought home? Did she learn what her village did and that's why she left? If not, why did she leave? Fisher Tiger was such an extraordinary character!!
Incredible video. You told the story so well and in such a streamlined way. One piece is such a masterpiece I'm so happy I've read it and that I can share it with others like you tekking.
Video Idea: What if Fisher Tiger accepted the blood transfusion. I know that kinda undermines the scene, because it's about how impenetrable that wall can be. But the changes to how the story plays out with a Fisher Tiger that survives that incident would be interesting to consider.
I agree theres a lot of food for thought and i see you acknowledge how this would not follow the meaning of that story. But i also like to think that, being one piece, fisher tiger's spirit lived on through jinbei who became the captain, and who we see has the respect of everyone in a very similar way to fisher tigers. I like to think the story of the sun pirates wouldnt be much different aside from probably arlong staying within the ranks.
@@lucaspichot1998 that's kinda what I mean, the ripple effect of it all: if Arlong stuck around, he wouldn't have been in the East to mess with Kokoyashi Village and Nami. Then there's Jinbe himself, would he have even went on to become a warlord leading to the strawhats and all that? Not to mention what kind of development Tiger himself would have, would he eventually turn on humanity, or would he eventually rise above it? Not to mention the impact he would have on future fishman/human relations. There's quite a bit.
Really one of your best videos . I think you really carried the meaning of this portion od the story really really well . It really speaks volumens to Oda's capabilities as a writer and you as a storyteller . I experienced the same emotions I first felt when I watched Fishman Island . Thanks ♥️
There will never be a time where watching Fisher Tiger's story in the anime won't make me bawl like a little kid. The atrocities he went through, his first hand account of humanity at its absolute worst point, and him trying to be that beacon of hope for the fishmen even after the absolute hell he went though. Just thinking about it makes me tear up. Cause nobody should have to experience any type of racism. Fictional or otherwise. It pains me that it's still going on in 2022 and the sad part is it will probably always happen. Cause some parts of humanity is just that scummy
Why i do love Fisher Tiger, I won't lie i do enjoyed his legacy through Jinbe because two that Jinbe carries the hope. I do love Fisher Tiger's lore as much good tie in to Jinbe and why i would have a moment and actually have a friendship with Jinba to honor that wish if i have that chance even if just have one moment as well with Fisher Tiger i would be on the side of bringing the hope with Fishman and Humans together at least have a moment of his time and just talk, laugh, and just have no bloodshed.
14:45 fisher tigers def up there for me, but as for whitebeard for me its when he creates the tornado of marines woth no haki or devil druit usage 16:37 legend that he freed koala and boa :) 31:00 Arlong was so wrong she became such close friends with Hack :) another fishman :) 41:55 this was so meaningful when Jinbe saves luffy by giving him his blood meaning he could do what tiger could not
The whole of the Fishman Island Arc, while perhaps not reaching the same narrative heights as other arcs, has the most depth (pun intended). Like, if Alabasta is a a sky scraper, then Fishman Island is an underground bunker: It doesn’t look like much on the surface, but there’s so much you can’t see.
What I really appreciate about the fishman arc is how Oda perfectly tackles the VERY complex issue of slavery and racism. In story like this that tackle slavery, it would be very easy to paint with broad strokes. Humans=bad and all that. But the amazing thing about Tigers story when he meets Koala is that he knows who the true villains are. The problem isn't the humans as a species, it's the people in power and the government that enables them to abuse their power. When Tiger sees Koala, he doesn't see "grr human. She's inferior and evil" like Arlong does. He sees a fellow victim of the world nobles and the world government that supports them.
Since Fishmen weren't given rights until relatively recently, and were only seen as mere animals before then, do you think that people, namely the world nobles, would have canabalised them? Like "oh, they are nothing more than mere animals, why shouldn't we hunt and eat them" the same could possibly be said for the minks too.
There’s a species of frogs that legitimately unalive themselves as a form of hibernation. I believe it’s somewhere in Canada that lower they’re body temperature to the point of death and whenever they want to come back they reheat they’re body’s and come back to life it’s literally crazy
Koala's backstory onboard the Sunpirates' ship at their beginning was incredibly hard hitting to me aswell. And I *rarely* - if ever, get in tears because of fictional story/charactera. But that shit was just too fuckin' wild, mane... x_x
Fisher tiger is more human than akainu and I can see aokiji and fisher tiger sharing drinks in an alternate timeline due to how they’re so similar on certain aspects
Have been watching One Piece since 2002 and Telking since err 2017? I guess? Good job mate, you're my fav OP youtuber! Can't help coming back when i need to catch up after or before jumping to a new arc.
From all the legacy's of Fisher Tiger, Macro's is the most surprising he actually became a slave trader capturing humans and mermaids. So he just went the pure individual route. With the purpose of having a nice life for just him. At least Arlong cared about the other fishmen.
I remember when luffy first met Jimbe that jimbe didn’t like humans then, he only really liked the whitebeard pirates and especially ace, leading to him developing a friendship with luffy
The Fishman Island arc is one of my favorite arcs in the series, but I basically hated it until the backstory we got of it. At first I thought it was just a display of the strawhats new power, but I was completely shocked by the history of the island. I hated (and still do hate) Hody Jones, but that conversation where he's asked what humans did to him and he said "nothing" really made me think for a while. Because there are people in real life who think similarly, and obviously looking down on people for something they didn't do is bad, but I can still completely understand the point of view and why they think this way. When you brought up Fisher Tiger telling the king and queen that he learned "human nature" reminded me of the death scene where he said he could never forgive humans. It made me think for a while as well, because he genuinely physically couldn't forgive a human, even if they did nothing to him. He understood that not all humans were bad, but because of the atrocious things they did to him and others, he physically couldn't change how he viewed them. The way that Oda discussed racism through the analogy of humans and fishmen made me think a lot about the topic in our world. It changed how I viewed a lot of the previous story and how I view the future of the story, and is part of the reason it's one of my favorite arcs in One Piece.
I wonder if the timelines match up, could fisher tiger be the reason Kaido and King were able to escape the holy land in their flash back? Could be a cool little way to link it up
FisherTiger is one of the most underrated character in the series. It’d be cool to reference him again with Koala. Also, a pretty somber video compared to others. A great vid.
I will straight up break down into tears the moment Dragon shows up to free the slaves and everyone goes home. There are some villains and organizations you can tolerate, but the celestial dragons are the scum of the scum.
There a concept . I been wanting to explore. What if instead of joining the revolutionary koala develops a hatred to humans. Ultimately arlong hates koala. It was because of her that fisher tiger was tricked by the humans of her homeland. His owner ship over nami is something he revels in. Because his resentment toward koala gets projected onto nami. Now there are several ways it can go. Koala is just another member of Arlong pirates the human that hates humans . Arlong just keeps her at arm length. Or a slave member that mistrust humans finding a kinship with nami a fellow human but still mistrustful. Koala would prefer her treatment under arlong over the celestial dragons. Now there two paths for each scenario a bad end for koala just like arlong or it takes her a while but she comes around it she wants to follow the path the cannon koala took fight for the freedom of everyone. She still mistrust humans but she working for a better world.
You know when a character is great when not only the posses a fleshed out and nuanced personality, a rich in depth backstory and finally when you relate to a character to almost a deep personal level. In my honest opinion fisher tiger is worthy of such an honor. A character whose tragedy not only became a daily battle but a mission to fight an injustice not only done to him but others much like our history such as with Gandhi, martin Luther King and my others. One often wonders if the good he or she does is worth it in the end but one must always remember the evil is only triumphant when good men do nothing when evil is allowed to consume us to control our lives and corrupt our very being. Darkness may envelope the world but is only through purifying light from beacons of light like fisher with oppose the darkness in the name of all the is good and just.
Jimbe isn’t fisher tiger successor, the point of the flashback is to show that jimbe learned to overcome the demon inside him to be a better person than fisher tiger , while arlong did the opposite
@@wwe12153 Since Jimbei overcame the demon inside of him, I think it means he has surpassed Fisher Tiger but still carries on Tiger's will of freeing the Fishmen. Hence, I personally think that Jimbei can still be Tiger's successor, the one to finish what Tiger started
I can't help but think that Nefertari Titi and Bartholomew Kuma freed Tiger during a reverie 16 years ago and helped him free the other slaves a year later. That would also explain why Tiger chose a sun for his pirate gang. To express gratitude. Also, I think Tiger still had the slave symbol on his chest when he talked to Neptune. The Frog t-shirt had covered it. Maybe that was exactly why Titi had given it to him shortly before he fled.
Just wanna take a moment to say I appreciate you Matt, one piece in my opinion is the second greatest anime in terms of its dedication to discussing and showing racism and discrimination, 1st being black clover and you talking about it so in depth and even taking a moment to regain your bearings because you felt tears coming on is truly moving. I just think it sucks that it takes anime for other people to actually care, when my people as a black person, riot or peacefully protest, or rap, or make movies about our struggles as slaves, and segregation, and discrimination, and racism, it's always so easy for people to blow us off and say it you weren't a slave, you have the same rights as us, and the reality is no we don't, we don't get the same treatment, the same money, the same loans, the same forgiveness, etc etc etc that white people get and even if anime is the only time people can relate to a struggle, even tho the characters not real, at least the struggle being portrayed is and in that moment they can finally get a glimpse into how it is to be hated for just being born different
A little thing I think about to get levitity in the fisher Tiger flashback is, the hair styling and the dress Koala has are all the sunpirates doing, this band of hardened men had to stop think how do we make this scarred child look like the adorable little girl she was supposed to be. And no, there were no confirmed women on the sunpirates, until Prailine

Fisher Tiger’s feat of scaling the Red Line is impressive and all, but can we talk about Luffy scaling a snowy mountain with his bare hands, no coat, and during a snow storm while he’s carrying Nami and Sanji?
And that was pre timeskip Luffy.
Its really interesting how Luffy parallels a lot of the old heroes within the One Piece world.
That was an amazing moment too but i don't think you understand how big the Red Line is definitely more impressive then Luffy
@@KingDreams I still question how he did it
@@KingDreams the drum rockies are like 5000 meters above sea level
That's actually an amazing coincidence
I'd love to hear your take on a "What if Geco Moria beat Kaido in their war/rivalry?"
Yesssssss
She was inspired by the sun pirates and join the revolution, thats the reason to leave
@@ryuuronin9852 lool luffy and zoro wouldnt find nami, they would never get in the grand line. End of one piece
Really one of your best videos . I think you really carried the meaning of this portion od the story really really well . It really speaks volumens to Oda's capabilities as a writer and you as a storyteller . I experienced the same emotions I first felt when I watched Fishman Island . Thanks ♥️
Oh hey, Tekking finally remembered one of the most badass characters in the series.
Tekking always thinking about his audience, cares enough to have his dates in both formats.
14:45 fisher tigers def up there for me, but as for whitebeard for me its when he creates the tornado of marines woth no haki or devil druit usage
16:37 legend that he freed koala and boa :)
31:00 Arlong was so wrong she became such close friends with Hack :) another fishman :)
41:55 this was so meaningful when Jinbe saves luffy by giving him his blood meaning he could do what tiger could not
NGL he might be the most badass character to not be one of main character. Like his lore and story is freaking legendary.
Never thought i could love tekking more. That opening just wow
This video really brings new dephts to the story of One Piece. Thank you Tekking101
The whole of the Fishman Island Arc, while perhaps not reaching the same narrative heights as other arcs, has the most depth (pun intended). Like, if Alabasta is a a sky scraper, then Fishman Island is an underground bunker: It doesn’t look like much on the surface, but there’s so much you can’t see.
honestly I hope we get a spin-off novel with Fisher Tiger freeing the slaves atop the red line
as well as the red line connection with Lunarians
No matter how many times I watch or hear abt fisher tiger and queen otohime's story, I will always shed a tear. Oda is such a brilliant author.
Must say this video is above and beyond normal Tekking101 videos, the way he handled the very sensitive topic of fisher tiger is actually a must watch
I feel like Fisher Tiger is super underated among the legends of one piece like Kalgara or Oden. He's a great character
I wouldn't be surprised tbh
There’s a species of frogs that legitimately unalive themselves as a form of hibernation. I believe it’s somewhere in Canada that lower they’re body temperature to the point of death and whenever they want to come back they reheat they’re body’s and come back to life it’s literally crazy
Koala's backstory onboard the Sunpirates' ship at their beginning was incredibly hard hitting to me aswell. And I *rarely* - if ever, get in tears because of fictional story/charactera. But that shit was just too fuckin' wild, mane... x_x
Hey.Who's watching this from 2/22/2222. Tekking your Dynastie stood strong in the Internet. Can wait to see your Video over the final of TwoPiece.
It's hard to hear is back story without me tearing up. Thanks for this video. One of your best for sure. 💙
Fisher tiger is more human than akainu and I can see aokiji and fisher tiger sharing drinks in an alternate timeline due to how they’re so similar on certain aspects
I would have loved Tiger to meet Luffy
Have been watching One Piece since 2002 and Telking since err 2017? I guess? Good job mate, you're my fav OP youtuber! Can't help coming back when i need to catch up after or before jumping to a new arc.
what about that time rayleigh swam for couple days in the calm belt? pretty badass to me
I really want Luffy to scale the red line like he did in Drum island one of my favorite feats
I feel so bad for Fisher Tyger he was just trying to do the right thing and he gets killed for it 😭😡
It's also 22/02/2022 which is the same backwards, and if you write it with digits from a digital clock you can flip it upside-down too.
From all the legacy's of Fisher Tiger, Macro's is the most surprising he actually became a slave trader capturing humans and mermaids. So he just went the pure individual route. With the purpose of having a nice life for just him. At least Arlong cared about the other fishmen.
Very good video. I kinda forgot the meaning of Fisher tiger and his legacy. You did an excellent job retelling it 😎
I remember when luffy first met Jimbe that jimbe didn’t like humans then, he only really liked the whitebeard pirates and especially ace, leading to him developing a friendship with luffy
I though I could listen to this video but dang I still cry
I have to say, I really like this more serious, emotional and dramatic version of tekking
Felt like a AoT reference when tekking said “To you, 200 years from now”.. even though it’s 2000 but we shall forget about that..
Amazing video tekking man
I've been waiting for this one for years, Fisher Tiger is such an incredible character and we're not talking about him as much as we should
Some favourite feats that i think you missed, Reyleigh swam through the calm belt and Luffy freeing alot of the impel down prisoners
Fisher Tiger is the best written most relatable human character (go figure)in one piece
This video was unbelievable, told the story so brilliantly and i had goosebumps the whole way. Thank you thank you thank you
It is 2/22/22.
Days like this always interest me.
The next and last day we have to look forward too like this is 3/30/30.
I wonder if the timelines match up, could fisher tiger be the reason Kaido and King were able to escape the holy land in their flash back? Could be a cool little way to link it up
Yooo this would be crazy
Kaidou and King were held in Punk Hazard, not Mary Geoise, and that was over 30 years ago. Fisher Tiger freed the slaves 15 years ago.
Uhh i think they were imprisoned in Punk hazard..
you honestly feel for arlong at first i hated him but i see where he is coming from
I have another badass feat to add to the list you didn't mention- Rayleigh SWIMMING from Sabaody to Amazon Lily IN THE CALM BELT
I imagine that if the Straw Hats go to Marijoise, we'll learn more details about Fisher Tiger and the Boa sisters' time as slaves.
Amazing video. I didnt really inderstood why the blood exchange between luffy and jimbei was so dramatic before. Thank you tekking :D
FisherTiger is one of the most underrated character in the series. It’d be cool to reference him again with Koala. Also, a pretty somber video compared to others. A great vid.
Jeezus as if my day wasn't going badly enough. Thanks tekking for the amazing video but it made me cry really bad
If him scaling the red line is a feat, then our boy Ryunuske scaled Zunisha thats even higher.
And I was just talking about Fischer Tiger a bit of yesterday and earlier today. How ironic that this video about him comes up
Damn, you pulled a tear jerker on me ghis time, you beautiful son of a gun! Keep on doing what you're doing. I love the way you do your content
Watching this video almost made me cry! Love you tekking! Please keep being you 💜🤘🏽
I will straight up break down into tears the moment Dragon shows up to free the slaves and everyone goes home. There are some villains and organizations you can tolerate, but the celestial dragons are the scum of the scum.
Love your methodology tekking... can't rush into other videos with missing knowledge... stay gold man
There a concept .
Tekking you're a goat so glad you can always improve my day just by watching any of you're videos.
The hero of Fishman Island and arguably Amazon Lily. Man, I am so happy we have Fisher Tiger's successor in Jimbei on the crew
A VIDEO I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR
I can't help but think that Nefertari Titi and Bartholomew Kuma freed Tiger during a reverie 16 years ago and helped him free the other slaves a year later.
Thank you for uploading videos so often
Yeah... This brought me close to tears.
I really love this story
I can’t explain how well this is showing all of this perspective from the fishmen
That intro made my day, thanks king!
When Jimbe became a warlord they gave the ship back to him.
Tekking you should talk some day about the Desert Rain Frog it has the best War Cry you would ever hear.
the fact that u had a second copy of the date for all the non Americans is the best like as an English dude its great (idk why little stuff like that usually gives me headaches)
Definitely think we need a video on one piece blood types since they were such a prominent part of the fishman island arc
Oda is so brilliant with his social commentary, its so cool how fishmen went from a paper drawing of a fish wearing pants to one of the greatest racial commentaries in fiction. Glad tekking took 2sday to make this video. I want someone who is even vaguely related to me to witness this in 200 years now. But if it were upto me, I wanna be here 200 years from now to watch this video again.
Fisher tiger's story made me cry when I read it as a 12 year old, and its making me cry harder now that I know a lot better what he stood for. Tekking's delivery and passion is what makes it even better. The last part where he refuses blood is legendary
Tekking you should do a top 5 or 10 tear jerking moments in One Piece. That would be a awesome video!
