As a long time Painkiller Black Edition player, I will quickly name some of the irks and gripes I had with HD: the fact that you don't get any feedback on screen when you take damage, the sluggish animations on enemies and some weapons, switched up music, level order and unfitting enemies in the wrong levels, Unreal Engine 3 movement and physics not feeling quite right at any point, main menu UI that was clearly designed for console use, areas and levels from the base game reused in the DLCs, reskinned enemies reused in DLCs. As for the plot, yeah the original game's story was a clear afterthought, but in HD the story is actively trying to get in the way of fun, first Grim Reaper goes out of his way to hire you, then he keeps interrupting you on the mission just to remind you time and again about it. Every time Daniel makes progress, he spawns in to yell at you like "DONT YOU DARE GO BACK ON OUR DEAL!" like an asshole. And then there's Eve who constantly teases Daniel and bothers him with her stupid self-loathing. The game can't help but keep reminding you that it's a sequel to the original, yet it provides absolutely nothing new to the table in terms of enemies or levels. It's a cashgrab, shameless. The graphics aren't even that good and performance is horrible. Everyone is better off playing the original game, it's cheaper, with more content, stylistically consistent, more fun, and runs better.
My 3 main gripes with the game. 1. DLC. 2. Bunnyhop/I can't tell when I get hit. 3 Objects that were destructible in Black Edition, are just a static part of the environment now.
5:40 oh, so this is why underbarrel grenade launcher from stake gun worked weird, giving me hard time doing LMB+RMB combo, which should sends nades further... Maybe they reduced enemy numbers for better performance? I remember original PK had this nice feature, where people with weaker PCs could run it in literal bullet time when frames might drop. And my garbage PC always run this game in bullet time...
Oh, you actually LIKED the top down levels, huh? Well, for me they were odd and I distinctly remember some of them glitching out entirely. But overall, if you can buy it as a whole package on sale that's worth it. $20 for the whole thing with DLC seems like an okay price to me. Wish you'd go more in depth about some of the fun stuff, like silly extra levels and all, or added cutscenes. Or even the brand new levels from Operation Zombie Bunker (that was the name, I think). Comparing the level design there vs what there is in the original etc.
Any plans to review the NecroVisioN games (think they use the same engine as the original Painkiller games)? Also developed by The Farm 51, which was founded by guys who worked on the original Painkiller but split off from People Can Fly (don't know if you knew this).
I installed this game after watching this video. I played the original game when it was released and I enjoyed it. However, sometimes it's better to leave the memories where they are. I don't think this game has a place in 2023. The mechanics are completely outdated and there are games, like Serious Sam, which make everything this game does just much better.
Funny, I've been playing through Painkiller:Black Edition on "Nightmare" (5-starring most levels) and am up to the final level of the main campaign; "Hell". _I have a modified levels-dot-lua file that allows all levels to be played on any difficulty setting (good luck with "Hell" on Trauma difficulty) - not going to miss out on what's available._ I've played through both and although Painkiller:HD is _prettier_ I just can't get past the grab for cash with all the DLC's (albeit I got a number of cheap keys for the DLC's so that helped). I disliked that the main story for HD is stripped down and even with the DLC, it is a disjointed experience for older fans. Just give me Painkiller:Black with the Wide Display HUD fix, a couple of script edits to main-dot-lua to allow me to play in 4k and set a frame cap of 500fps in the NVIDIA control panel.
It's definitely one of the better entries in the series, and it's cool revisiting these levels with fancy graphics, but I still find myself returning to Painkiller Black.
it's just a case where it looks like a better game, but it doesn't feel like it at all. a remake should be doing the exact opposite thing; feel the same but look new. as is, this game runs worse than the original, and turning the graphics down to a playable state reduces it to looking worse than the original as well. there's no point to it. there are also a lot of minor gripes that all come together to make it uncanny, like how there is no indication of taking damage on screen anymore, you only hear Daniel scream in pain, or how some gun animations are worse, or how some effects like Painkiller's laser beam or the Electrodriver's sparks, or SMG's flames are now nasty looking pngs. also, unreal engine physics and general movement doesn't feel right compared to pain engine also not every enemy model and not every piece of level geometry is actually updated, some are lifted directly from the original from 2004 overall after 8 years of waiting and so many other shitty entries in the series, this one feels like a cheap cash grab
This was a big let down. Worse Blood effects, less maps and some of them are in dlc. Graphic is nice but interactivity and physics worse....black edition is still the Best and there are some modded versions/fan remakes with more content, nicer graphics and more weapons
Yes, it looks pretty, but honestly you are tricking yourself out of a better experiece buying this. PK Black Edition is still a good looking and well running game (visit PCGW page in case of issues) and selling levels as dlc is just plain bullshit. Hard pass.

I am sad your channel doesn't grow more
It's really good
only chads watch it
1:37 interesting, this song is also used prominently in Necrovision, and the shotgun sound they used in this cutscene is from that game too xD
Damn, it's almost 20 years since I've played first part of this game.
there is a pretty big bug in the campaign with the top down view: i played that multiple times, and the final boss NEVER spawned
The top down stuff looks like a run-n-gun in the style of Gauntlet.
Plays pretty nice on my steam deck!!!
Can you please review NecroVision?

it's not a good sign for a remake when they have to reduce the game's features to make it run
This is an odd title for me because of the trout cards that allow you regenerate health and have 666 ammo for every weapon.
those were in the Black Edition as well
Trout cards? Sounds pretty fishy. 🐟
If this remake had all the 34 levels from the original game in the base game without any dlc, it surely would have been the best pk game ever made.

I remember playing it years ago and noticed that the awesome physics engine was gone. That ruined the game for me

How is this game $250? Wow just.. wow
Where is it 250

ı partially aggre with you but serious sam doesn't have painkiller's atmosphere
is a game from 2014 i think so i am proud
serious sam has different mechanics and movement, so it barely has something in common with Pk when it comes to the gameplay.

I honestly don´t see the hate this Remake got back in the day, on the other hand this title definitely has it´s problems.
Cut content to then sell it later.might have something to do with it.
