The two tracks are worlds apart! Though only four years apart, you have to look at what four years we're talking about. It's like comparing '84 and '88. Kurtis's version is not really hip-hop. It speaks to a time when rap wasn't established yet as it's own musical form. I know Rapper's Delight and so on had already been recorded, so there were already full verses, but it wasn't about drum beats yet: rap didn't really have it's own sound like it did with Run and D. (Even after Run-DMC you still had songs like Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" which, to us back then, was hip-hop, but, looking back, it really wasn't.) So, I can't call it: it's apples and oranges to me.
Kurtis has more funk. The collaboration of the band pulls all sorts of vibes together. RunDMC gets 3 guys trying to bring the electronic version together. I like the funk. Yeah I like the funk. 😍
They both were great for the era that they were in. Kurtis Blow was who my parents listened to it wasn’t even considered rap at the time, it was considered funk and he is clearly influenced by JB. Run DMC was my era, when it changed from funk to rap faster and heavily influenced by bass and 808’s
Wasn’t run Curtis blows D j ❓ And russel was Curtis manager , and weren’t they making Curtis beats for him ❓so they have the same foundation from the same family tree 🌲
Kurtis Blow is inside the groove differently..an accompaniment as opposed to on top. Also Run DMC used a drum machine which kills the interplay, replacing it with a cruder beat. Kurtis rapped in the spaces created by the groove, a tradition inherited from James Brown, Millie Jackson and Gil Scott Heron. Run DMC worked on top a beat which was carried forward by the manufactured Hip Hop they called 'Electro', back then. Guy's like Rakim took the Kurtis Blow groove to the next level.. Always keep aware of the real torch!
It's crazy how unrecognized Kurtis's role was upon the infrastructure of the entire culture (along with Afrika) backkkkk then. Music wise, it was Run's house.
Good observation. Run-DMC's version definitely has more of a sense of urgency and desperation. But I will say that Kurt's more party vibe approach to the subject matter can be seen as reflecting one of the themes of black existence, i.e. "smile to keep from crying" Seeking some means of enjoyment while coping with life's harsh realities.
Not the same. Kurtis and Russell were folks. Covering songs from within your crew in a small amount of time vs Snoop covering the Get Fresh Crew from the 80s is an actual cover. Not a crew recycling album cuts from their own catalog.
American music forms: Spirituals, Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Country, Gospel, Bluegrass, Folk, Rock n Roll, Doo-Wop, Soul, Funk, Disco, Punk, House and of course Rap and Hip Hop---all enjoy well documented Black American roots coupled with undeniable Black American influence---whether directly or indirectly.. Latinos -- puerto ricans particularly -- explain how you co-created or co-invented yet another installment in the legacy of Black Musical expression known as Rap and Hip Hop, yet didn't co-create or co-invent any of the elements of the 14 or so African American music forms that preceeded it? Or why you were nowhere to be found and absent during the creative and inventive foundation outlining the forms of Black American musical expression, brilliance and greatness throughout, or even prior to the previous 14 or so Black American music forms that are mentioned above. Yet then, all of a sudden--out of nowhere, you folks come along and falsely claim latinos and/or puerto ricans co-created and co-invented Rap and Hip Hop 50/50 half n half (which is the evidence-free and utter nonsense being peddled by derrick colon, radical latino, fat joe and numerous other un-informed and envious latinos---claims latinos never mentioned, verbalized or asserted during its inception in the early 1970's)---latinos claims of "50/50--half & half co-creation and co-invention just don't add up---it makes no sense and are increasingly coming under heavy scrutiny which is leading to these claims being easily debunked--as it should've been. Moreover, the heavy hateful and many times racist criticism directed at the Black American youngsters, by the racist white media over having created Rap and Hip Hop, latinos -- particularly puerto ricans -- and jamaicans NEVER came forward to denounce the vicious onslaught, yet 50 years later they want to take credit for this FBA art form that they didn't create.
@@AmAf-t2g Really? No kidding. If you're either latino or puerto rican, it would be nice to convince fellow latinos of this fact that may be hard for them to swallow.
If it wasn't for rappers like Kurtis Blow , there wouldn't be a Run DMC.🤔
💯
Literally. Run started out as Kurtis Blow’s DJ.
Kurtis is more funky. Run Dmc is more rock and roll.
Spot on
Two different time periods in the development of hip hop, two different takes of the same subject.
Run DMC without question.
Kurtis Blow wins this round
Not even close bro

One of the rare times I like the remake better, RUN-DMC on this one.
KURTIS BLOW for me... James Brown Vibe...
Kurtis has more funk.
The collaboration of the band pulls all sorts of vibes together.
RunDMC gets 3 guys trying to bring the electronic version together.
I like the funk.
Yeah I like the funk. 😍
Loved them both ❤❤❤ They paved the way of hip hop🎤🎧🎼
Run DMC. It’s not close. The production is impeccable. Right with the very first beat, the listener is already pulled in.
Great music 🎉..i miss those days
Of course the king of rap Kurtis blow❤
Highschool lads Intense Rap battle now out on my channel, can you visit and give your sentiments?
Kurtis Blow was our real intro to Hip-hop/Rap especially "These ar tha Brakes." Run DMC was second gear for us both was our soul
Both deserve much respect and recognition. Kurtis Blow was very good. RUN-DMC was super great.
Kurtis Blow for certain.
Seen both @ the 1st & 2nd Def Jam Funk Fest Concerts - Can never be Duplicated the 80's to the early 90's..! 🎉✌🍾
RUN DMC 💯
Kurtis production group produced sucker emcees-Kurtis B is the origin…
Man y'all too young Kurtis was a cold dude. Run had a different flow. I love both......
I respect both artists. If I had to choose, it would be Kurtis Blow, a pioneer of rap and hip hop. ❤❤
I can’t choose, I like both!
They both were great for the era that they were in. Kurtis Blow was who my parents listened to it wasn’t even considered rap at the time, it was considered funk and he is clearly influenced by JB. Run DMC was my era, when it changed from funk to rap faster and heavily influenced by bass and 808’s
I don't look at it as a remake but as an extension.
Wasn’t run Curtis blows D j ❓ And russel was Curtis manager , and weren’t they making Curtis beats for him ❓so they have the same foundation from the same family tree 🌲
Run dmc
Speaking as a black man in America, that one!!!
Both versions are good ✌🏿🎼🎶🎤💯👊🏾
Had no idea Kurt did this song first. That said, I'll give the nod to Run-DMC on this one.
Always keep aware of the real torch!
Run dmc 100%.
Im going with kurtis blow
RUN-DMC Hands down.
Run DMC🎤
It's crazy how unrecognized Kurtis's role was upon the infrastructure of the entire culture (along with Afrika) backkkkk then. Music wise, it was Run's house.
NO DOUBT RUN DMC!
No comparison! One is standing on the shoulders of the other. 💯
Kurtis Blow
I used to listen to Kurtis Blow then rap went from being fun to social commentary and I was like WTF! Kurtis Blow rules!
I got Run-Dmc because the music is harder reflecting the pressure of the content. Blow’s cadence and music seem too light for his content.
You kidding right. Run DMC
Kurt Blow's version has more Soul sound to it. ORIGINAL
Hey fam 🙋🏽♀️
It’s ’bout time for you to do one of your late night
𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒄𝒌 𝒊𝒏𝒔.
Kurtis
Run DMC is miles ahead of Kurtis and I was around for both. 🎉
Nice 👍🏾 drums 🥁 and break beat in RUN DMC’s version
*Run D. M. C., no doubt!*
Ong.
Kurtis Blow years before DMC
i like Run DMCs style better overall...so...
Always Run DMC,without a doubt! Both good but Run DMC all the way
Nah I can't choose between these two that would be disrespectful considering the fact they're one of the pioneers of hip hop.
When I was a kid, the only thing Kurtis Blow was famous for was the Christmas Rap🎉🎉🎉
Kurtis’s version almost put me the to sleep 😴. RUN DMC’s version woke me back up
⬆️
On another note we really need an Marimba Ani audiobook coz we really yearn to know about how true back grounds
Didn't realize it was a remake until now
Both.
Run DMC all-day
Not A Contest Or A Choice.... I'm Just Gonna Hafta Listen & Vibe To Both Albums (Yes...I Said Albums) In Full!
Like both of these artists, but have to say I like the tempo of the Run DMC version just a bit better 🎶
dmc
Kurtis Blow. But I’m biased.
Of course Run DMC is much more body moveable, but you know Kurtis was alright but if I really had to choose, my first one would be my pick. 😊😅
Kurtis no question that’s on against 2 he leave no room on on that beat he just keeps on going got to love that
I love RUN-DMC, but the K U R the T I S the B L O and the W ain't nothing to F with !
I like Kurt with These Are the Breaks and other songs, but this one goes to RUN DMC..... It's more up tempo
Run DMC
Kurtis did it better, but Run DMC did a nice version of the track.
True.
KB!🤔
Run DMC #QGTM 💵
They were both influential
So RUNDMC did the first hiphop remake. Not Snoop Dog with Lodi Dodi. Noted
🤔 sooo Run DMC 1983/4 hard times to Snoops 1993 Lodi Dodi?
Not the same. Kurtis and Russell were folks. Covering songs from within your crew in a small amount of time vs Snoop covering the Get Fresh Crew from the 80s is an actual cover. Not a crew recycling album cuts from their own catalog.
As far as hip hop remakes, you also had Keith Murray and crew redo Rappers Delight and there was another band that did a gogo version of LL's I'm Bad.

It was a few Rican bros early on because of Bronx demographics, but HIPHOP is clearly FBA
@@AmAf-t2g Really? No kidding. If you're either latino or puerto rican, it would be nice to convince fellow latinos of this fact that may be hard for them to swallow.
Run D.M.C. hands down, sorry Curtis Blow, love ya, but
Run D.M.C. took off while you faided away.
RUN DMC had a better flow.
Sorry Kurt, but RDMC won this one hands down bro missed those days.
Man lol it's Run-Dmc come on now 😂 Kurtis Blow is Kool but he's not touching them
We have not evolved as a country. It's like America is stuck in a racist rant. HARD TIMES 〽️
Never knew that. Wasn't much into Kurt like that. So they remade Kurt song? Kurt song was irritating couldn't listen to it all.
Kurtis Blow is hitting!
Kurtis Blow
