I love your definition of the guys edc of yesteryear. Im one of those older guys who remembers that stuff. I been trying for years to tell the younger generation the very thing you just said and they never listen. We always had our edc's, and we carried that stuff because thats what guys did and we were guys. Thanks for reminding me that there are other old timers out there in the world who still remember the old ways

after years of collecting "tactical" knives, Benchmade, Spyderco, Al Mar and a few others, I have found myself carrying my fathers old swiss army knife as well as a Case Stockman. ive recently sold many of my knives just because I don't really see them as cool to look at as the Case knives and other similar styles, sometimes going back to basics is really what is needed

I really wouldn’t consider benchmade and Spyderco knives as tactical, but as EXTREMELY useful tools.

Case says the stainless steel they use is a proprietary blend of 440c, and spectroscopic analysis seems to confirm it. I carried a Case Trapper for thirty years, and use it nearly every day. The steel certainly seems better to me that the knives I've tested that do use 440a.
As for the spey blade, Case and Ka-Bar say that after only a couple of years on the market, the number one use of the blade, by far, was skinning fur bearing animals. It's still used for this today, and very nearly everyone who uses a Trapper calls this blade a "skinning" blade. It's perfect for the job.
The clip point blade is used to make the money cuts, the incision from foot to foot, and from, uh, bottom to chin, if blanket skinning, and the skinning blade is used to remove the pelt from the body. The dull drop on the point stops it from accidentally cutting through the pelt, which would drastically lower the value.
In my part of the country, almost every man still carries a pocketknife. Whatever they carry in the summer, when fall rolls around they slip a Trapper or a Stockman, often both, in their pocket, and carry it until spring. Trapping is still big here, and so is small game and waterfowl hunting. Tactical knives are useless for these things, so slip joints, almost always a Trapper or a Stockman, still rule.
Considering all the companies still selling slip joint knives, a lot of people must still be buying and using them. I think these knives still sell because hundreds of thousands of people still need them. There simply are no other knives that can do the job these knives are designed to do.
The Stockman is extremely popular with professional and amateur woodcarvers. There is no better non-dedicated carving knife.
I believe many people think times have changed, and that slip joints are no longer carried, or no longer used and needed. They are still needed, and will be as long as people still hunt, trap, and fish.

Yes well said most people around my area carry a slip joint case knife when fishing, hunting, and trapping. But they also carry a folding utility knife because there are a lot of metal companies and construction so in those fields of work you need to cut metal and a lot of other crap which a utility knife will do best at.

Case medium stockman knives are not obsolete at my house. I have one that is close to the one you show in the video with the main difference being the case shield on yours is a Case USA on mine. It rides in the watch pocket of my jeans daily and is used for various chores during the day. I’m 72 years old so maybe it’s only as obsolete as I am. I’m not a snob about the whole cv thing and I find the ss version to meet my needs very well. Thanks for the video. Also, in the old days it was assumed that if you were old enough to carry a pocket knife you were old enough to apply pressure to the blade in such a way as not to close it on your fingers.

Rob, I just so happened to purchase my very first Case knife shortly before finding this video of yours and it was love at first sight! It felt like nothing I've ever held in my hands before and was truly one of those proverbial, "where have you been all my life" moments! The knife I bought was the Case yellow Trapper CV model. It's truly funny because I probably own nearly 300 knives yet I've never fallen for a knife the way I have for this one. I just can't believe it took me owning nearly 300 knives before I finally decided to try a Case! I guess having tried 300 knives and still falling head over heels for the Case just proves how great of a knife Case really makes! Great video Rob! I hope to collect *many* more Case folders in the future!

I am partial to Case knives. I remember a lot of discussions between my Dad my uncles and my Grandfather, all of whom had a slip joint knife in their pockets, of which was superior, the Case or the Booker slip joints. If any of them was dressed you could bet he had a pocket knife in his pocket. Just guys doing what working guys did in those days in East Texas anyway. I’m 70 years old now and I typically still have a Case knife in my pocket every day and I haven’t missed many days since I was 12 years old.

I just got a classic 3 bladed stockman made in Solingen by Robert Klaas.
Actually was a cool trip, only about 40 Km from my home. Robert Klaas was founded in 1834, their current location was build by them in 1908. It really is a gorgeous old building, just google it!
It really was like entering a time machine, I was absolutely floored by how charming and gorgeaus the place, workshop and makshif salesroom was. It feels like just standing at the end of poduction at the table where the knives are packaged and send to the retailers. Just that you get to take them all from the table, look at them and buy them! Such a cool experience. That would be a dream job working there.

For real everyday carry, I favor the Victorinox Rambler. Small, but adequate for most everyday needs: Blade, scissors, nail file, flat screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, cap lifter, toothpick, and tweezers. I have many others, both SAK and traditional slip joints, but the Rambler covers nearly anything that comes up on a day-to-day basis.

I'm an old fart and still have the Scrade stockman my Dad bought me when I was 13. Bought another identical one in the late 90s and marveled that the later model was was beefed up, not down. Like you I prefer clip points pointy. I find that ideal for digging out a splinter. A new Case Trapper on the way, a whole lotta food prep and squirrel processing planned for it. Cheers!

I love the way you described the peanut, and the way it got its name. It drives me crazy when someone on the net calls a trapper a stockman. You probably have nearly all examples of knife and blade patterns and could make a great vid describing the whys and therefors of knife names. It's true that young collectors could buy a book explaining this history, but in most cases they probably won't. You have great presentation and I think it would be much appreciated...!

Only a handful of newfangled 90s "tactical folders" are my favorites.... Benchmade 940, D2 RAT 1 and Sog Fielder (the Fielder may not be the best steel but it is classy looking), But I don't carry them much. I carry 4 patterns a lot being the Peanut, Sodbuster/work knife, Stockman and my favorite the camp/scout/utility. I also will typically grab my buck 110 with its Quickdraw belt sheath before i grab a modern folder. I should clarify that I am 26 at the writing of this comment being born in 1995 but I have always seen the value in slips and the cosmetically appealing but very utilitarian purpose of these tools. I also prefer how easy they sharpen.

Say Heah, Today was a Christmas in August Day. I got 4 Case Knives, a Large 3 Blade Yellow CV Stockman, a Large 2 Blade Conoe CV, and (2) Large Trappers one in S.S., and the Other one in CV. the S.S. has a Carlone Handle and the other one is a Saw Cut Ranger CV. plus a Hand Warmer and a vintage Camillus 2 Blade Electricians Knife. The Case Knives were all in mint condition and with the boxes, and the whole bunch cost me $140.00 at the pawn shop. The reason I went shopping, was because I sort of got on the Nessmuk Carry kick, and I really was looking for a 2 Moose Blade Style Slip Joint, the closest to that I guess I have would to be the Canoe, but no such luck, but I know any of my New Knives will work, I also have a vintage Cold Steel Black Rhino, and I also got lucky today, I shared my displease with a sheath I got with one of my fix blades where I had the handle thinned down and polished, the knife came out beautiful and looks much classier than the original broomstick handle it comes with, but the knife was too lose in the sheath, I mean real lose where it was almost dangerous and I almost cut myself a few times. To my surprise a new sheath was mailed to me and the new sheath fits alot tighter, but the other sheath fit my new Rodent 5 I just got and it fits perfectly in the other sheath, dangler and all. and the color of the sheath matches the sheath for my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet. Even though my Rodent 5 is not a Nessmuk Style Knife, but I don't hunt meat and mostly use it for camp use. I feel like I got extremely lucky how everything worked out. from how nice the sheath's fit and look and now my slip joints, all I can say is WoW. that's why I'm surfing Case Knives, and learning more about them, I feel so Blessed today.

When I was growing up, the brand I most often saw in the display cases in the hardware stores around here wasn't Case -- it was Schrade Old Timer and Uncle Henry knives. The blades weren't polished, and the handle scales were all plastic, but in every other respect they were well made and useful knives. Schrade also made small numbers of "Heritage" knives for collectors, which were the exact same patterns, but with bone handles, partially polished blades, and a display box. Great stuff, but the company we knew is gone, and today's Schrades are made in China.
Camillus Sword Brand is gone. Carl Schlieper Eye Brand seems to be gone. Robert Klaas Kissing Crane knives are mostly made in China now, although I think they still produce a few limited editions in Solingen. There's not many survivors from the old names. I don't have a Great Eastern or a Moore Maker yet, but that's something I should try to correct soon.

I'm not fond of the knives made with the "round tip" process either. They're not even very easy to re-point because the roundness extends a good distance back from the original tip. But it's Case, and I love them, so I overlook that, which is actually quite unlike me -- I love a sharp tip!

Hey Rob, great video ( as usual ) and nice little knife, but I have a little correction for ya. Zippo bought Case, not the other way around. I've read it in several knife collecting books. I was rather surprised myself, you'd think Case would be the stronger of the 2 factories. Matter of fact, years before that, both Case AND Zippo were owned by "American Products" or some name like that. I can't remember if that was before or after Parker ownership. So Zippo & Case were once "sister companies" under a conglomerate. Thanks for the video.

A jig and a fixture are two different things. A fixture holds the part so it can be worked on. A jig guides a cutting tool. What you described was a fixture. That Case is not a true stockman. A stockman has a clip, sheepsfoot and spay blades, not a pen blade. Modern Case knives are made to be looked at, not used. The last one that I had with really good steel was bought in 1970. The quality of their steel now is all over the place but none are very good. I've been carrying an Old Timer stockman for about 15 years now. Bought back when they were US made.

      ardvarkkkkk1 Merriam Webster:
Jig: a device used to maintain mechanically the correct positional relationship between a piece of work and the tool or between parts of work during assembly.
Fixture: a device for supporting work during machining.
So... A fixture with, let's say, drill bushings... would be a jig and a fixture by your thinking. Further, what good would a fixture be if it didn't "maintain mechanically the correct positional relationship between a piece of work and the tool or between parts of work"/ Not very good of course. So that quality of a fixture must be assumed. Thus, the two terms are synonyms. Perhaps in your field of manufacture, the terms were misunderstood to be different. As you said, "Many people use the terms incorrectly." Old timers called them jigs. Younger folks were trained to call them fixtures. Both are correct, but one not politically so. I'm not quite sure why you raised the point, but at least admit you might not be correct in this case. But if you're into endless debates about insignificant semantics, you'll have to go it alone from here.

I'm not wrong and the terms are not interchangeable.

@ardvarkkkkk1 Everyone to their own but I totally disagree with you. I’ve got case knives from the early 70’s to present and have had no issues with either the cv or ss Steel.

Funny you should bring that up, my friend. I was on the phone with Campfiretalk not 30 minutes ago, toiling over which GEC knife to buy next... LOL! Traditionals will be a coming focus of my channel as well, but I will indeed do some homework using yours as a reference. But how about a little advice today? Northwoods Fremont Jack or GEC #53 Cigar 2-blade (clip and wharnie)? I'm genuinely torn between the two... Help!!!

the 53 is a beefy knife and i have a 53 eggs and hot sauce acrylic moose that i really like. i think if i were you though, i'd get the single blade. a single blade is classy.

Has anybody ever seen a Case stockman that didn't have blade rub ?
It's funny that none of my Schrade Old Timers or Uncle Henry Stockmans have blade rub . And I've got a bunch of them . But yet every Case stockman I've ever seen does and the do it at twice the price .
    😉
I do appreciate the fact that they still adorn those politically incorrect jigged bone handles though .

Parker Edwards was made in Jacksonville Alabama not Jacksonville Florida and there's no way in hell anyone would have ever given a hundred bucks for one 😆 they were the Forerunner of what is now called bear and son.

Love the Case knife but the commentator not at all, could have said everything in half the time, after he'd cleared his throat and blown his damned nose for god's sake, gross.
