Brunel built a railway from scratch from London to Bristol in 5 years, with pick axes, wheelbarrows, explosives and lots of elbow grease.
We can't even finish HS2 till 2041 with all the heavy machinery and technology he never had.
His bridges still stand, magnificently doing their job 150 years+ later.
IKB was a legend in every sense of the word.

I did say ‘probably’ the most important engineer of Victorian Britain! Yes, there were many extremely clever and forward thinking engineers and inventors in that period as there had been throughout the whole of the period known as the ‘Industrial Revolution’ that started around 1760 but most of these became known mainly for one type of engineering be it roads, bridges, steam engines etc. Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s work covered many different aspects of engineering so I will stick to my original comment of ‘probably’ the most important engineer of Victorian Britain and I am extremely comfortable with anyone else having a different view. So much of our modern world has its roots in that eighty or so years of fast moving development and invention that is plenty of room for other great names of the period.

Thanks so much for that Paul, was surprised by the comments , how many people didn’t know of him! And yet he did so much in such a short time, that we are still enjoying to this day ! The Clifton suspension bridge straight off, the tunnel under the Thames, railway lines, and ships the famous photo taken just a few years before his death, in front of some really huge chains, were the chains used to “eventually “ launch the Great Eastern ship, six times bigger than any previously built, those chains were used, but took three months to actually launch. Brunel suffered a stroke whilst aboard, and was taken to his home, where he died ten days later. He had always been a very heavy smoker, always with a cigar in his mouth, so his heavy smoking was contributed to his death.
Someone mentioned a statue being removed ? There was a lot of controversy when a statue built did not show him with his trademark cigar in his mouth, so was rejected.
His father was from Normandy, and met his mother Sophia in Rouen during the French Revolution. Known as a Royalist, Marc fled to New York, but poor Sophia who remained in Paris to finish her studies, was arrested and thrown i to prison ,suspected as a British spy, until the Revolution subsided. They reunited in England and married in 1799.
The name Isambard came from his fathers side, and Kingdom was Sophia’s surname…hence the two unusual names.
Isambard was always self conscious of his small stature of five feet, so he always wore a very tall hat to try and compensate. Another thing he hasn’t really been recognised for was his design and build of a hospital. During the Crimean war, so many British soldiers became I’ll with dysentery, typhoid and malaria,Florence Nightingale wrote to the Times, asking for help and subsequently the Government commissioned Brunel to design and build a pre fab hospital , which could be taken out to Turkey, and quickly erected, and just as quickly moved elsewhere when needed and erected again! some of the design included ventilation, drainage, and Florence Nightingale referred to them as “marvellous huts” saying that oit of 1500 patients, only 50 had died.
Sorry for sounding like the Encyclopaedia Brittanica, but in his relatively short life I think that man did such amazing things, designs buildings, etc etc, of which so many are still functioning today, so we do have a lot to thank him for,
Thanks for locating the grave Paul. When you say their names out loud, they know they are not forgotten. Love and light Paul….stay safe ! Love Helen in Norfolk 🙋‍♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤❤🥰🙏🦋🦋🦋👍

Possibly the grave of the most impactful person you’ve visited to date, one who left lasting memorials, - Not everything he worked with proved a success, spent time investigating the South Devon Atmospheric Railway last summer which essentially failed and was taken out - there’s a memorial pub - The Atmospheric Railway Engineer in Starcross. A fascinating Victorian Gentleman.

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
    From the beginning...to the end
He noted that first came the date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years
For that dash represents all the time
That they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
Know what that little line is worth
For it matters not, how much we own,
    The cars...the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
    That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
    And always try to understand
    The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger
    And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
    Like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
    Remembering this special dash
Might only last a little while
So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent YOUR dash?

I've been to Kensal Green cemetery. The Grand Union canal passes alongside it and there are some catacombs which are occasionally open to the public. Brunel was a trailblazer and it can be hard to remember that a lot of the technology we take for granted would not be developed for many many years. Brunel was working at a time when the railways were in their infancy. I like your advice about the dash or the line; few of us will ever have a straight line. Mine has certainly got some squiggles.

Amazing in Britain the Establishment keep naming bridges, Rail Stations etc after Monarchs and completely ignore the architects and engineers who actually made these projects happen. Unbelievable that Crossrail was called The Elizabeth line and Brunel again was completely ignored. It’s absolutely shambolic that these great engineers are constantly undervalued and overlooked for undeserving People.

My family lived around Kensal Green and I have family buried there along with many famous people. My great grandfather work as a groundskeeper there during the war and when the bombs missed the railway would hit the grave yard, so he wld have to put the graves back together. I have found graveyards very tranquil and wander around them looking at headstones and peoples names. Sorry to see the old building is fenced off. One of my mum’s friends, her nephew jumped off there unaliving himself. It was a deliberate act not an accident

hi paul my engineering hero well ahead of his time incredible amount of things he designed and engineered l,ve visited the great britain in bristol amazing ship, and walked over the clifton suspension bridge, the thing that fascinates me the most is the royal albert bridge spanning the river tamer between devon and cornwall from a young age l thought it looks like a snake with the tubular ironwork such a masterpiece.

Isambard (or Izzy, as I like to call him) is my hero. Let's face it with a name like that he'd have to become something wonderful!
