Food before one is just for fun. It teaches hand eye coordination and develops a strong gag reflex to help prevent choking. Purée is runny and has a greater risk for being inhaled into the lungs, which can cause pneumonia. With baby led weaning, use large pieces of veggies and fruits. They just explore the texture and learn how to hold on to it, and then they learn how to get food in their mouth. It introduces the flavors of veggies and fruits, which helps your toddler not be so limited in what they will eat. If you’ve ever had a toddler that lives on chicken nuggets, because they refuse to eat anything else, and literally gag when they do try, then you know what I’m talking about. It’s a method based on scientific fact, so it’s really not up for debate, or a matter of opinion, or a “parenting” style. We are constantly learning new ways to handle our children that are better and safer than the past. I don’t see why this should be any different. We don’t use old rubber pacifiers, or put our babies to sleep on their stomachs, because it’s cuter, or for nostalgias sake. As a mother who raised children in the 90’s, and dealt with terrifying choking bouts with my oldest son, and then had a precious child in our family die from choking, I take this stuff very seriously.
As parents we do what we feel is best for our children. To each their own.
But really! If you're worried about choking purees are more dangerous!
I made baby food for both my babies and a really good tip is use ice cube trays with lids and they freeze in perfect portions. Oh and if you have a dollar tree, they have an orange powder cleaner that works great for baby stains!
Emma is doing so good with her eating. Don't let the comments bug you about how you feed her---do what you feel comfortable with and what works. A hint for the food stains on her clothes: pre-soak in cold water with a bit of baking soda, then regular wash. Such a great vlog! Love you Swannie family!😊💖
People also told me to do the baby lead weaning but I did what i felt was best and stuck with the baby food! It's up to you, justin, and emma as to what's best for her and what she's ready for! My son still doesn't have teeth (turning one in February) and i just started letting him have very very small peices of food. I go by what he shows me he's ready for! Love you guys! ❤
Opal_ Hummingbird love this comment ! My daughter just turned 1 and only has 4 teeth in the front. Her pediatrician said she needs more textures (which we give her puffs and corn and peas) but other than that the baby food makes me feel more comfortable. She doesn’t have many teeth to chew through meat and I don’t want her to choke
I completely understand where you are coming from with the baby lead weaning! I felt the same way! I started my son on purées and spoon fed him until he was a little bigger and I felt comfortable with making him soft pieces for him to grab himself. So instead of doing one thing over the other we ended up doing a combo of both! I would let him feed himself and I was also spoon feed him at the same time to ensure he was getting enough :) Do what works for you! You know best for Emma!
Emma is such a precious little one. I cried the entire time I fed my son for the first time. I wanted my mom to be there with me when he reached that milestone. Can’t wait to see what y’all have been up to!

I know pother people commented it and I mean it from a mom heart.. put the baby food into smaller jars so you don’t introduce saliva to the food that she isn’t going to finish. 💕
And yes do whatever you feed comfortable with! There are so many different ways/styles to feed!

I did puree’s (home made just like yours) and then transitioned to baby led weaning when my son was 10months and had teeth. He now at 14 months eats anything we eat and can feed himself with a fork and spoon. Except yoghurt, yoghurt is messy 😂
You do you, baby led weaning is a bit scary when they’re little, do what you’re comfy with. No mum judgement!
Also you can get like baby smocks that completely cover them (sleeves and all) which are perfect if you want emma to play with the spoon
You guys are the most amazing family. I know I have said this before, but you guys are so mature, level headed, kind and compassionate. You are also amazing parents. Love watching each and every vlog and watching Emma grow 😍
The bibs great - you can also give them a spoon to hold while you are feeding them. Their eye/hand coordination doesn’t kick in for quite some time- you are doing great by the way 🙂

Recommend starting with the bibs as soon as you can so she can get used to it. I had so many of my kids cute clothes ruined from not protecting them, even the foods you think won't stain. Bibs are easier to pull off after eating to wash. I'm sure you know!
Also wondering why you say silicon spoons are safer? I don't know so would love to know.

Why anyone would discourage natural homemade baby over store bought of ANY kind is beyond comprehension... You go girl 👧
BLW is nerve racking as a loss parent. I started with purees with my 2 and when they showed signs that they were ready we did the food food. You know what you are doing with your baby dont stress it girl. Emma is doing wonderful with foods, plus it's so fun.
Use the longer plastic bibs or the rubber ones

My husband works 50-60 hour weeks, for over 3 years now. Our daughter is medically complex and constantly in and out of the hospital and seeing various doctors so we don’t see each other much either. My heart goes out to your friend, hopefully it eases up soon on her, it can be so hard. ❤️ Much love to you guys, little Emma is growing so much, and so beautifully.
I wanted to do baby led weaning with my son SOOO bad! We started at 6 months, and he just did NOT get it at all. I tried every. single. day. till he was nearly 10 months old, and then we stopped and just did purées. Looking back, I wish I would’ve just started with puréed food from the get go. I wasn’t making enough milk to keep up with him, and he was ready for solids. Those 4 months were so rough on both me and him. I’m due anyday now with my 2nd baby, and I’m not going to start her off with baby led weaning. I’m going to make her purées when she’s ready for solids. So you go mama 👏
Iceblock trays are great for freezing baby food in too. You just pop them into a freezer bag when frozen.

You feed your baby how you feel is best ❤️ I did purées with my fist and now do baby led feeding with my 1 year old. It can be scary they do gag and can choke you have to be prepared to assist them if they do start choking. If you do decide to look into or start baby led feeding there are a lot of supportive groups on Facebook with great information 😊 I can’t believe how big Emma is getting 😍

That’s the route we did for feeding our little guy. We did purées only for the first month or 2, then started adapting the baby lean weaning concept and it worked great. My son is now almost 10 months and eats everything with no problem.

My twins who are Emma’s age love butternut squash! It’s their favorite food so far. They also love sucking on apple slices. Also, munchkin makes silicone spoons that have a little guard on them so when baby holds them they can’t stick it in too far. My babies love holding and chewing on them.
Home made food is so good. Try a bit of rice half carrot and a potato boil it and then pure it when my son was younger I would give him this pure just trying to give a menu for Emma❤️im sure your menues are perfect Evey num and dad knows their kid ❤️

Babies are so hilarious with the first foods! My older son loved his purées. My younger one never was crazy about them and one day he grabbed the spoon away and he never let me feed him again! He wanted real people food or nothing!

I started weaning my son around 5 months and although I wanted to do baby led weaning, my anxiety just wouldn’t let me. He’s now 14 months old and eats everything fine (eats everything we eat - I rarely cut anything up for him anymore because I like to let him hold foods and he chews bits off fine on his own) and has just learned how to use a spoon by himself. So you just do what feels right and don’t feel like you need to explain yourself to anyone☺️ love you guys sm xxx
For all the people saying that Justin should snap onesie "under" pants, those aren't pants they are tights and putting the onesie on the outside of them keeps them from coming off with all the baby wiggles.

Okay so I looked it up, but I don’t know if I’m understanding right....is baby led weaning just giving them solid foods instead of purées and them feeding themselves? I always thought you were supposed to do purées first?
Buy bibs with sleeves!! They don’t get in their way and most of the sleeved bibs I found tie in the back, so they can’t be pulled off. Only thing that worked for my son! 😊

it's so cute to see emma react to the foods you gave her. espeically when she had avacado. thats good that you make her food. alot healthier for her. it's pure vegetables. that's good you try one vegetable every week so you can see if she has reaction to a vegetable. thats how some of my parents would do at my old daycare job.

We had the same due date but my baby was born the 21st, she has bad reactions to fruit , it's a really bad reaction. I went back to butternut squash, and sweet potatoes. I think the fruit has a lot of acidity to them. I'm so glad Emma is eating without spitting it out , my daughter was spitting it out too up until a few days ago! ❤️
