My first time watching. I can only thank you for your candor. We lost our loving "Lucy" at the young age of 4 1/2 years. She was beautiful - everyone loved her. It was heartbreaking and I would not want to go through that again.
As a happy owner of Bernese breed dogs for more than 40 years now, I think it is necessary to clarify some information about the health and life expectancy of this breed.
There was a time when the Bernese was very fashionable in Europe and then the USA and the rest of the world. Faced with the enormous demand for puppies, many unscrupulous breeders did not bother to select and even less to control the possible genetic defects of their breeders, resulting in a lot of puppies sold all over the world with serious health problems and very short life expectancy. Fortunately, serious and responsible breeders and clubs took quick measures to protect the breed.
My advice: If you want to be the happy owner of a magnificent dog of this breed, ask for advice from a prestigious club, they will be happy to help you. My Bernese have had a long life, all but one of them surpassed 11 years of age, and the one that did not make it to that age was due to a bad veterinary diagnosis of Lyme disease.
Our Berner started blowing his coat a little under a week ago and we've already filled up more than a big trash bag full, along with the usual large amount of shedding around the house! Great video

I grew up with Bernese Mountain dogs and we were lucky to have our first dog for 13 years with us. Dear Freddy was simply the best boy ever ❤️. (although he did have a talent for getting into trouble while his humans were at work/school😂)
DO NOT GET A BERNER(bernese mountain dog) Just don't. I want them for myself, every last one of them. Seriously other than shedding these dogs are the absolutely best pet ever. Do your homework and get your puppy from a quality breeder Not a puppy mill. A quality breeder and you shouldn't have any of these issues. Even if you get a not so healthy one though these guys and gals are the best, just teach and train, train train. They need to have their mind kept busy. In short DIBS on every berner born, I want them all.
My biggest guy is 155 and he acts like a 5lb dog.
6 years 8 years only? Omg these big dogs are so loveable and the sweetest too. My tiny cairn was a 4 lb puppy and sweet big Bear used to lie down on the grass so little Mikey could walk on him and play. Bear got a brain tumor when he was 9yo so maybe he lived a long time for his breed. We loved Bear so much. *Wipes tears away.
IKR. I usually have dachsunds, Mine lived till 13-19yo. Now I have 4 dachshunds, 3 golden retrievers and 2 strays. The oldest dacshund now is 16yo, while the 2 most senior goldens are 8 yo. 6-8yo is too short.
Interesting, my bernese mountain dog doesn't sound like most of your points - he was very calm, not motivated by food or toys, literally didn't run after a ball one single time. The most lazy dog my family has ever owned. Though good point about health issues - hip dysplasia sucks. And hair, well, yes you need to groom regularly.
We thought that a greater swiss mountain dog would be similar in temperament, but boy were we wrong - super playful and excitable, a better guard for sure with his intimidating demeanor and voice, but so much more energy than the bernese.
@@Mimijona I think your mileage may vary with this breed, as with many. Our Berner is a good watch dog. Very alert to surroundings. He becomes impatient if we aren't outside doing something or playing with him. He can be lazy, but he does NOT like being in the house all day. Very playful, but doesn't like to fetch, instead, he likes to play keep away or tug. We have taught him to play fetch since he was a puppy, so he can and will do it, but generally, he'll chase the item down and chew on it...until we come near him...and then it's keep away. He'll retrieve 4 or 5 times and that's it. Now, hiking? He loves it. He'll go 6 or 7 miles and won't tire out. Loves walkies.
Love my Berner. ! He's a great dog. Friendly and very personable. Loves to go for walks and loves being outside! Smart and funny.
Another big reason not to get one is they HATE hot weather, and can overheat. So if you live in a hot climate, please reconsider. They love snow and cold. Even in Switzerland these dogs get hot in the summer in the lowlands, and are not suited for hot places.
I live in England so mostly throughput the year it's 13 degrees celsius and in winter can reach minuses

Its so great you made this channel (im a subscriber from your other channel). And i have fallen absolutely in love with berner's! I already have a Aussie but ive been contemplating getting another dog. The only thing holding me off with this breed is the health / life expectancy.

My granddaughter found a puppy in the highway running in circles like it had been dumped. Turned out to be a Bernese mountain dog The owner never showed up so we kept him.My Great Pyrenees female has adopted him so he’s happy
How would a Berner do as a service dog? I'm thinking the training and tasks could help with mental stimulation needs and perhaps physical activity, as well. This is aside from the fact that service dogs are by their people all the time. But I don't know. I'm considering getting a dog that can be trained for service work (for me) and would be a calm companion, as well. I'm just not sure which breeds are best to consider for this and I'm starting with the larger dogs first.
they do awesome as service dogs. I have one for my daughter that keeps her anxiety down and he is spot on when she starts to feel ill. only problem is they want to sit on her, not with her ON her. she actually just loves the attention.

There is NO such thing as a mini-Bernese Mountain Dog. There is no standard. It is unscrupulous "maters" mating Bernese with King Charles Cavs Spaniels.
Upwards to 100lbs??? My boy is 10 months and he's 105lbs. He is going to get much larger isn't he?

good video....I don't want people wanting the Berners because it drives the worst of the breeders (??) to breed for the worst reason: demand & $$$$ i've had 8 Bernese...rehomed, rescued and well bred babies....I have 2 rehomed boys...one that will be 10 yrs this month (a cancer survivor- soft tissue sarcoma) and a lad that has fear aggression who has had more lives than a cat ...he has bone cancer (diagnosed 14 wks ago) but he is and will die running...(not your typical Berner) :) mine are all raw fed, titred without vaccinations if applicable based on the vaccination, and no topical tick/flea chemicals. I adore this breed and the best thing you can do is know your stuff when breeding. I do NOT breed, but I know a really knowledgeable breeder who if they are good generally make ZERO $ on breedings....they do it for the love of the Breed and never for the $$

Everything you love about them is hard countered by their short life span. To this day, all Bernese videos just remind me of how sweet mine was :( Also, they are terrible at guarding. BUT if you're an aspiring robber, a house with a Bernese is the house for you; if you robbed the house I grew up in, my dog would not have sat for you (she never jumps on people), would have gotten you a pair of slippers, and would have barked for you when her parents came home.
What is the average drool factor with this breed?
They aren't St Bernards. Some Berners have droopier jowls and eyes...they tend to drool more. Meet the parents and know what they look like in that regard. Ours only drools when he sees some food that he wants. Othewise, no more drool than a retriever or lab.
Why did you have to start by saying about the short lifespan? It's quite upsetting. Most Berners I've had and know of have lived beyond 8. I'm not a snowflake and I'm not afraid of harsh truths . I'm just tired of the short lifespan narrative like it's a given. I'd hate for people to not have one because they're frightened/worried that it will die alot sooner . Don't get me wrong , I do respect some of the facts you spoken of and it's clear you are enthusiastic about the breed albeit

I see alot on reddit people try get there BMD big fast and that big problem. I like big bmd to but his healt is more important then gis size.
Big dogs need grow slow and not fast so there bones get strong.
Other problem now days is people try make big dogs bigger. Normaal size for BMD is 50kg/110 but now days thy go up 60kg/ 132lbs or more and that to big for BMD.
Can you speak to "Sudden Onset Idiopathic Aggression" in this breed?

Yes , that is a common disease that comes from the owner not training the dog. They are afraid to discipline the dog, lets them jump on people and run the house. This is ok when it is a puppy, but when they are large, it causes trouble. So the owner , who didn't train the dog at all, makes up a name called "sudden aggression syndrome" or "episodic anger syndrome" or something like this to have an excuse to give up the dog to the shelter. A good number of berners are given to shelters when they are 1 1/2 because they are now large.
@@fdllicks I inherited that untrained dog from my tenant at 3 years old. Needless to say, it was all bad when it went bad.
