    I did two manual conversions 10-12 years ago, both RHD cars, one a 1983 525e (Eta) and a 1985 M535i. Both had the old type master cylinder that bolts to the bulkhead/firewall in the engine bay. On both I pulled the cross shaft and swapped the pedals leaving the pedal box and steering column in. I sorted the starter interlock by joining the yellow/black wires behind the dash. On manuals they fit straight together, on autos a loom to the selector plugs into them so you just unplug them.
    It's a bastard of a job really, especially without a ramp/lift. I'll not do another one. I'm too bloody old for that.
    Converting an Eta to manual - you need a manual Eta or 85-87 325i flywheel with the TDC trigger pin.
    On diffs: 525e/528e' s use the same 188 diff as an E30 325i - swap the outputs and rear cover and you can fit a 3.73 in there. On the M30 cars, you can use a 635CSi Auto 3.64 and they really haul in 4th/5th.
    Diff rear covers - ha! Early cars '81- late '84 used a 188 diff as did 635's. In late '84 BMW fitted the new 535i with the big 210 diff and they changed the welded diff mount bracket on the boot floor. After this, they used one boot floor on all E28's and E24's and fitted a new design rear diff cover on 188 diffs from 518i to 528i plus 628CSi's. Guess how I found out? 😂

    I love e28's more than e30's. I had to get 2 daughters thru college and me thru 3 years of cancer treatment so I haven't started shopping for one just yet. One thing about the BMWs from the 1980's you don't need a college education in mechanical engineering to restore or modify one. Finding rare parts is another thing that will eventually lead you down the path of more modern alternatives. Go with the flow. Your car your art. So paint a beautiful picture that pleases your eye... I just found your channel. Subbed. Good luck on the build.

    • @m3nameisjosh464
      @m3nameisjosh464  ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you should say that as I actually do have a mechanical engineering degree hahaha. But I couldn’t agree more! I appreciate the sub and I wish you luck with finding the right car one day and hoping all is well in your recovery!

    528e diff mount is identical to the M5 diff mount and only like $60 on FCP. Not necessarily an "upgrade" over the 535i mount, but certainly just as strong and 1/6th the cost.

    Hi Josh, great video, thank you. I am just starting my second auto to 5-speed swap. First on was on an E34 535i back in 2018. Current one is an E28 535i with 60k miles. I am looking for the bracket that welds to the trans tunnel roof that the linkage bushing bracket bolts to. It is shown at minute 38 of this video. Any chance you have a BMW part number for this? Thanks
