    A break action single shot was my first gun. I was working at a factory and was talking to a coworker about guns, something we have a shared interest in and the conversation eventually moved to my desire to buy my first gun, ideally cheap. He agreed to sell me a Taurus break action single shot 12 gauge for $120. He was very generous and included the scope he had on it, a nice sling, and a hard gun case to store it in as well as a ziploc full of federal 12 gauge sabot slugs. I love it, its a slug gun with a rifled barrel with no choke, firing shot out of it will be wildly inaccurate but sabot slugs are extremely accurate out to a good 100 yards (probably even more but I'm not that good of a shot lol). Modern black polymer furniture with a picatinny rail on top which is really nice, he included the scope but the rail means I could fit a red dot if I wanted. It's got an external hammer, a manual switch safety, and ejects upon opening. I still have it and will never get rid of it. Its perfect for hunting, home defense, and just fun at the range. While I'm not that great of a shot, I've gotten quite proficient at reloading it quickly, the ejector really helps speed it up.

    Nicely presented Marc. Prices are a lot different than years back . I bought a 410 single shot cooey at CT 40 years ago $60 :) them days are gone . I don't hunt anymore so I'm getting rid of most of my guns and crossbow stuff in the future . By browning semi 30:06 today new is about 4 times the price I bought new so interesting enough guns do hold their value much better than most things we buy and that's an interest topic between gun owners or those thinking of new vs used. Cheers 👍

    Hi Marc, good information here. As kids, we learned firearm safety and went hunting with our dad, an excellent woodsman. Later, I would read just about anything to do with hunting and firearms and I have a well-rounded knowledge of their use and function. You present some good information here for someone who is in the market for a new purchase. My dad preferred the .410 shotgun for partridge and used skill in approaching them instead of long-range shots. later, as an adult, I moved up to using a 20 gauge single-shot for partridge and found it a very good choice with a lot better range and minimal damage to the bird if used right. I went hunting with a friend from work a few times who used a 12 guage for partridge (that I thought was overkill) but he had skill in aiming that produced low damage to the meat and extra-long range on birds. I still preferred my 20 gauge. Writing this reminded me of a favorite gun of my dad's that was stolen off the doorstep of our shed many years ago. It was a foldable .410, single shot that stored in a canvas carrying case when folded. I forget the brand, but it was in absolutely mint condition despite many decades of use. We left for a day hunting trip and didn't realize that the gun was forgotten at home until a partridge presented itself on the road ahead and the gun could not be found in the vehicle. We went straight home after realizing the gun may have been left on the step only to discover it gone! We lived in the country and there was a well-travelled gravel road near the house leading into hunting land...some thief passed by in the hour or so that we were gone and made off with that prized gun.

    • @OpenAirOutdoors
      @OpenAirOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a disheartening story! It just makes it worst when its a prized possession! The 20 is a great choice for grouse👍 With a proper aim and the right ammo the 12 is excellent as well. My absolute favourite choice, and I have used them all! Is the 28 when it comes to grouse. I believe it is a widely under rated. It just has that perfect balance of power for both range and thick underbrush.
      Thanks for coming out Craig 🍻

      @@OpenAirOutdoors That's not the only disappointing story I have...About 30 years ago, while my wife and I were both at work, we had a break-in and they cleaned us out of all our outdoor gear, jewelery and electronics, including several fine rifles and shotguns. They took a 308, a Remington Model 7 chambered in 7mm-08 and a prized .300 savage lever action with the brass rotary magazine, plus a winchester Defender, a remington pump-action 12 gauge, and several single shot guns including my 20 guage. We had insurance but the replacement policy was for us to buy the replacement item first then wait for the insurance company to reinburse us, so as it worked out, many didn't get replaced. One thing I learned from this experience is to never have large kit bags and duffle bags just laying around your house, because that's what the thieves used to transport all our stuff out of the house. We used to have several large ski-type kitbags and large army kitbags that we never thought about, but that's what they used to walk down the street un-noticed with all our stuff. So the lesson is: have insurance, lock up your stuff in safes (especially guns) and never leave large kitbags out in the open inside your house--they make stealing your stuff that much easier.

    • @OpenAirOutdoors
      @OpenAirOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1
