I just looked it up. Thanks so much for the info my friend👍
@@OpenAirOutdoors The leather may appear to be slightly darker at first but once it's thoroughly dry (takes a few weeks) you'll see that it doesn't darken the leather.
Reminds me of high school, those cheap lighters were fun to fiddle with, where did 50 years go?
OMG! Ya i kmow where your coming from! Life truely is short!
I carry a Bic and a Zippo cuz I'm redundant that way.
Its always a good idea not to rely on only onr source👍 Thanks for watching Aubrey✌️
Cool place! Where I grew up abandoned mines were a lot scarier looking than that
This mine was carved into solid granite! You can escape anything in here! 👍
@OpenAirOutdoors that's awesome. Everyone needs a bunker
Watched the full video again Marc. Definitely a good place to camp and explore. Lots of equipment left behind as you say. One place I visited in 79 had an intact early 60s Chev pickup truck in great condition between log sleeping quarters. Still there I am sure but not likely in good shape. Thinking I may try and find again this summer. take care and keep warm!
Thanks Mark! When i was a kid I explored tons of old logging camps in the Temagamy area. I could not find those places again today is I wanted too! Take care Matk✌️
Howdy Marc- wow! That would be interesting exploring. Thanks for sharing this. God bless
You're very welcome! God bless you as well Paul✌️
It would make a cool camping spot. That is, if you don't mind the bear arriving home at 2 AM!
Actually not! Its cold, damp and the ground is covered in sharp blasted rock! But one could certainly wait out the nastiest storm in there! See ya Craig✌️
Thank! I like your background by the way, looks cool! PS, i want a sticker! ;-)
Thanks its my winter hibernation spot 😆 email me, title it STICKER and I'll send you one 👍 oaoutuber@gmail.com
What is the difference between a full length choke and a two inch screw in choke ?
Ho Dale, I'm noy sure what you mean by "full length" choke. The screw in choke gives you the ability to change your shot pattern to acomadate the type of hunt you are doing. If there is no threaded insert than you have a fixed choke. Thanks for watching✌️
Not sure how I almost missed this one. That is an excellent way to store your fire kit, a great way to stock it. Have you ever messed with Flint and steel and char cloth? Thanks for sharing brother
Hey don't feel bad just about everyone missed it!. I did a little testing with TH-cam and it was a lesson lerned! No I never dabled with flint/char cloth I never had a real intrest in it. The fire kit is just another precaution thing that will never hurt having it👍 Thanks Paul✌️
Wow friend, thanks for all that explanation. I always bring matches and a lighter in my backpack, they are very necessary for many things. Not only to heat food, but also to light bonfires and make smoke or a lot of fire so that they can locate you in case you get lost when looking for arrowheads. BLESSINGS TO MY GTAN FRIEND.
You are very correct Coyote! Be prepared no mater what enviroment your in. Thanks Coyote✌️
Well said, good advice all around. A fire kit is a great idea.
It sure is Dan! Thanks ✌️
last time i seen a flame that high on a lighter was when i was watching someone smokeing hard
haha! My father was a pipe smoker and ya, there was crazy flames when he wold light it!
he smoked rock? @@OpenAirOutdoors
Ummmm, no!
@OpenAirOutdoors a lighter with high flame is called a crack lighter here in Ga. seen many use them for that purpose
the lighters look nice
Thanks Tasha✌️
Im curious, whats your opinion on the Yellow Flame Insert that are now available for Zippo Style Lighters? Its very similar to crack lighter style tools
Yes the Zippo butane insert! I don't own one, but anything butane burns extra hot. I would think the butane insert will last longer than the conventional lighter fluid between fill ups. As a tradesman I use butane lighters/mini torches to do electrical repairs (shrink tubing) For outdoor use it is wind proof. However when starting a bundle of tinder you kind of have to get your knuckles right in there if you know what I mean! Hope this helps! Thanks for coming along✌️
I go with a 5 pack of Bic lighters and a bunch of cheap candles. Plus a Swiss army knife. Need fire lit? Try the Bic. No good? Make wood shavings. Put candle wax shavings on top. Then build your teepee of wood with an opening to light the shavings. Candles naturally waterproof. Candle emergency light to build fire if caught in the dark. Bottom of trees have dead branches on the tree, I have found dry kindling to start a fire using them after a week of steady rain. Then did a 'log cabin' fire build around the fire to protect the fire while it dried out the larger dead wood. Used the 'fish scaler' on the Swiss army knife as saw to cut wood to size. Oh and take that Bic lighter. Run your Swiss army knife down the side. See that? It's a plastic sleeve. Take it off, you have a white lighter you can see the fuel through.
Sounds like you know exactly what to do out there in the back country👍 Great stuff! Thanks for coming out and commenting Lukiel✌️
Nice compact kit Marc and good advice. Somehow missed this video when it came out. That dubbin tin brought back memories as a kid in Orillia when I rubbed it excessively on my mukluks which were the rage for a few winters back in the 60s. My Dad showed how me how to use chico or sheko (burnt pine stump chunks) as firestarter. He learned it from his Sagamok trapper friends in the 40s.
Hi Mark, I did a little testing with TH-cam and I posted 2 vids 15 minutes apart. I lerned not to do that😆 Most folks compltely missed the second video! Yes chico is a french word for dead standing tree. No english translation for it. So a burnt out area in a forest would be full of "chico". The Dubbin wax is still as good as product now as it was then! Take care Mark✌️
Great tip, Marc. Have a good week, brother.
Thanks buddy, you as well✌️
I agree with your position on all counts. I smoked for many decades and I have to say that Bic is the most reliable lighter I ever used. I think that I would include one alongside any other lighter that I packed in a kit, just to make sure that I had one that would light, without fail. I smoked cigars for 2 decades and always did that mod to my lighters to get that high flame for warming the end of Churchill sized stogies. The one drawback is that sometimes the valve won't close off all the way and the gas will leak out. I saw, at least twice in this video, that your lighters were SLOW to shut off. If you have never tried a Clipper brand lighter, I think you should. They are also very reliable, but in spite of being plastic, they are refillable, not only with fuel, but with flints. As a matter of fact, the striker section of the lighter can be lifted out of it, if it's out of fuel, and can easily be used to throw a spark into a tinder box or onto char cloth. It has those advantages over the Bic, but it also shares the Bic's drawbacks of being opaque and non-adjustable. I never understood the attraction of "waterproof" matches that had to be struck on paper backed striking strips. Ever try that with a soaking wet box of those matches? "Waterproof" "strike anywhere" matches would make more sense, IMO.
I would like to respond by first thanking you for commenting with great points backed up with knowledge and experience! It is refreshing to have an intelligent conversation with someone that can also be objective while being respectful! Some commenters in here could lern from folks like yourself, so thank you so much! Now to add to this discord, As you seen I certainly do carry Bic brand as well. I have both strune about my gear. The hack can cause fluid to spill out excessively and that becomes a dangerouse situation so the flame adjustment has to be done with care hence the long flame duration after button release. I have been made aware of the Clipper brand by a few other commenters and have already looked into them as I am not familiar with the brand. My first impressions is the button seems large and pertrudes far outwards. I would be concerned that it could be depressed just stored away in a pack or pocket. Having that said I do plan to buy some and test/use them to find out for myself. I'm with you about the storm proof matches needing sand paper to strike! The prudent method of use with them is to store them in a sealed waterproof container with sand paper. The great advantage I have had with them is an extended burn time! I have also used them by sticking the match in the dirt upright after lighting and then dump a pile of tinder on top to start my camp fire. The strike anywhere matches apear to be a thing of the past for some reason! I did recently come across a very old can of strike anywhere matches that I estimate to be 40+ years old and I may do a video on testing them out. Maybe revisit the disposible lighters including the Clipper brand at the same time! Thanks for coming along Mr., you certainly are always welcome to hang out @OpenAirOutdoors ✌️
@@OpenAirOutdoors Aw shucks LOL, Thanks for the praise. Do storm proof matches light on sandpaper? It has been my understanding that the material on the striking surface is essential to start a flame on the match, proper. It is a chemical reaction. The strike anywhere matches have the necessary compound on their tips. BTW, you can find the old time strike anywhere matches still, but they are very expensive. They are considered dangerous and can't ship by normal carriers. The "GREEN" strike anywheres are just not as good as the old timers are. I have several boxes of the small Diamond Match Company matches, and I bought them for a pretty penny a little over two years ago. I am trying to find some of those in the large kitchen match version that lit the gas cook stoves in every kitchen I ever visited for the first 50 years of my 70 year life. Every kitchen had a box of them in a metal holder nailed to the wall near the stove. It had a rounded scoop at the bottom to catch the matches as they came out of the box and a slot cut out on each side to make the sandpaper strike strips available for striking. An empty bean can on the stovetop was the home of the burnt matches.
@@OpenAirOutdoors One other thing. If you look closely at a side by side photo of a Bic and a Clipper, you should see that the gas button is situated about the same on both. The shape of the removable striker assembly may be throwing you off. I'm sure you've seen the zip tie hack to disable the button on the Bic. The same can be done to the Clipper.
@@mrhalfstep That may be the case for some brands! The storm proof I have work on fine sand paper. Yes the green tip or no where as good as original strike anywhere but i think you'll strike out finding those extra long matches. I suppose the need for them is all but compltely gone now days!
Does it double it or half it? More fuel use = less uses, also had lighters rigged this way melt themselves. Food for thought
A translucent lighter gives the ability to prepare for when it runs out of fuel. One must always excercise caution when using any plastic lighters! thanks for watching and commenting Birddogg✌️
Id honestly keep both. the off brand lighter can be modified to increase the flame but in doing so you also run out of fuel quicker than if you use a Bic brand lighter. Both is the best option!
As you can see I do cary both! I just really like the see through body and large flame! Thanks for watching Damion✌️
Bic lighter's flints will last to the end of the gas. Cheap lighters won't.
I can honestly say I've never seen that yet! And I'm 56
@OpenAirOutdoors most cheap lighters need to be struck more than once to light, killing the flint. Bics usually light first or second strike. 53, smoked for 37 years.
Great tips and great items in the kit. I'm a big fan of dryer lint and have several different types of packaged fire starters in my kit.
Living in Alaska you certainly would want to be prepared! Good on you for doing so Jared✌️
Appreciate the video, watching how they grew one cup in less than a month was admittedly surprising, I went with what I commented about Mika Klopsworth, although confess it took a full 6 weeks to become 2 cups bigger. Took a bit longer yes, bur googling what she posted, definitely they’re fuller and firmer than I expected!
Thanks for the info! 😳
Another good one, I learned something new again, Thanks
Hi Robin, thanks. See you soon✌️
Thank you, even someone who is all thumbs (me!) can do it
haha! Keep on keepeing on my friend👍
Does this come in pink?
Not sure but you can get that with Bic!
You can buy adjustable BIC lighters, they a wheel where the tab is on the cheap lighter, but you can continue to open the valve more and more until its spurting so much butane it can't stay alight, and you don't have to pop the metal flame guard off or any modifications, it comes straight out the package that's way. Bit more expensive than a normal BIC but you get the BIC reliability.
Interesting! I haven't seen an adjustable Bic in 30 years! However it still doesn't change the fact that you cannot see the fuel level on a Bic and prepare for it. Thanks for watching and commenting ✌️
Just buy a Clipper lighter man. You can refill them. You can replace the flint. You can even tilt it for a bigger flame. They're just better. Torch models are also available that are about 50 cents more. Also refillable.
I just did a Google search on Clipper, from another comment saying the same thing. It certainly looks good. But i have an issue with the extra large exposed button. That would be easy for it to de depressed stored away in a pack or pocket. Not sure I would trust it for that reason! Thanks Crashline, appciate the comment✌️
@@OpenAirOutdoors The torch one can't be depressed easily. Also it really isn't that big. But you do you man! Cheers! :)
I still would prefer what we call in Russia a " permanent match" for this purpose. It's a metal container with kerosene with a rod on the side and a metal "match" with a bit of fabric as a screwing top. You can put it on many times, but if you are in urgency, you just flip it on top of anything and launch a spark.
Yes I had those at one time! But unfortunately everyone I seen were junkers that would leak out. Everytime I would take it out it was empty! I would'nt mind having one that is dependable! If you have a recomondation on a quality brand that is dependable I would appreciate it👍 Thanks for watching✌️
Clipper lighters are the best way to go. I havent watched the video yet, but hands down clipper lighters are the absolute best
OK I had to Google Clipper to see for myself. They are nice looking rigs, refillable as well! I did notice something in the design that reminded me of Cricket lighters back in the day and that the button is larg and exposed. It was easy for the button to get press down just being in your pocket. Emptying the lighter and thats unreliable to me! Thanks for watching Thomk✌️
@OpenAirOutdoors yeah the gas button is large, The flint wheel comes out and then the whole button assembly holds the flint so it's all replaceable. Pretty cheap and sweet lighters. I use a lighter leash so the pocket issue isn't a problem for me, but I definitely see what you mean.
I remember modifying those lighters as a kid to start my own fires in the backyard. Nicely done Marc thanks for sharing that
Playing with lighters as a kid? Ya you just gave up what generation your from Paul 😂 See you next time✌️
Id still rather have the bic and just have some form of tinder in my pack I hate those cheap adjustable lighters Ive had too many of them fail when trying to use them
I have to say I have had good luck with them! I just hate not being able to tell when a Bic is about to go out of fuel! Thanks for commenting Mike✌️
I use the clear multi-chamber ones that dont have a valve. Less to fail. I cant say I have ever needed a longer flame. Always been able to start a fire just fine with a normal flame. Also uses less fuel. The dual chamber is nice because, while it is just for structural support, it also can potentially save some fluid in the event of a crack or leak.
Good point! I like that👍 I did not want to strech this video out to much by demonstrating all the uses for a long flame but here are a few examples. When cooking on a camp stove its nice to light it without having to lift off the pot/pan. When lighting a Colman lantern the long flame actually reaches the mantle. Lighting the pilot light on a propane appliance is tricky, the long flame makes than easier! Thanks for wayching and commenting ✌️
May I say, I think the smaller flame is better?
hahaha! You most certainly can my friend👍 Personal preference is a luxury you all have! Thanks for comenting Burton✌️
@@OpenAirOutdoors I only say that because I think the fuel will last longer.
Just get a blowtorch dude it’s 2025
haha! Yes that certainly is an option👍
Do not need adjusting flame because it uses more gas
They will all run out of fuel eventually!
No it doesn't. Jesus Christ man, our grandfathers carried a few matches and a knife and made shit happen. Now people can't walk to the mailbox without a firesteel, 3 lighters and 6 types of tinder. No offense, but unless the conditions are really bad you should just stay indoors if you need all that bullshit just to spend a couple of days outside. Its a BIC. It's the AK-47 or the Colt 1911 of lighters. The more you know the less you carry.
Yes, staying on the couch will always keep you safe from bad conditions! The point here is there are options and some may be beter then others. Don't be a troll be respectful.
Hells Ya Marc, thanks for the tip!
Any time Tyler🍻
I would always care a bic. That cheap, adjustable lighter will fail on you. Bic bring back the adjustable lighter.
Your giving up your age if you remember the star wheel on a Bic😆 All Bics fail! Hence "disposible" Thanks for watching Dozer✌️
Great video and awesome tip! Thanks for sharing
And thanks for coming along Rod✌️
Everything you said is true. The hack is clever. Here's a tip about BIC: hold a flashlight to the bottom of the lighter and you can see the fuel (except for black ones).
Yes the lighter trick does work on most colours! Thanks for watching Stephen✌️
buy clear ones heh, replied before finishing the vid, he mentions it. But yeah, I couldnt imagine having an opaque lighter, even the ones with graphics have a clear line.
I can't imagine not having any source of flame
Agreed! Its a must when trecking around the outdoors! Thanks for coming along Ash✌️
So to fix your problem with BIC take your flashlight put it on the bottom of your lighter and you will see how much fuel is left
Yes that works on alot of colours like even orange but still not as convenient as being able to just see at a glance while using it during camp chores for example! Thanks for checking in Josh✌️
You want windproof (mini-blowtorch) one, because it's not really more expensive than a standard disposable lighter, but it's windproof. You can also use it for tin soldering.
Yes the mini torches work quite well! They arn't as convenient to buy in bundles to toss around all your gear like cheap disposables are. Thanks for watching and commenting✌️
@@OpenAirOutdoors i work outdors and smoke you can easily buy disposable refillable windproof lighters ive used them for years they are pico too and work after been in a washing machine
Really?.. Double?
I was thinking more triple but I don't want to exaggerate.
Perfect little hunt and camp. Making me hungry!
I'm glad you enjoyed it Shadow! It was a tasty meal 👍 See you next time✌️
