    When I was homeless and got a room in the YMCA at 16 M&S used to give us all their expired food. I ate like a king.

      It was good food though. I lived on spinach and ricotta lasagna, smoked salmon sandwiches and steaks. The YMCA also provided a free cooked breakfast. Made up for having to live with alcoholics, junkies and people fresh out of prison. I had to grow up fast.

      @GenialHarryGrout 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@joannegray5138 I get the idea of using food that supermarkets throw away, but in the UK I believe that it is illegal to do this. You can ask the supermarket for food that they are going to dump but once it is in the bins then it is classed as theft unless you ask for permission first. Isn't UK law fantastic. If I have misunderstood the law in the UK then someone will let me know.

    Just to help you out a little. Shops usually put on reduced stickers the day before expiration. So the first reduced sticker won’t be a big difference from the original m. However, the next day is when there’s like a 60% discount. That’s because it’s the last chance for it to sell before it expires. Most shops have a specific time where the highest reduced stickers are put on. In Tesco it’s 7pm everyday. You may wanna ask the m&s store u go to

    I worked for M&S and they have time slots for reducing, the bulk of the food gets reduced in the morning before the shop opens, veg and fruit gets reduced then too, salads gets done around 2pm along with the sandwiches etc. also there is a time later on, usually 6 where they reduce everything again to crazy low levels, I once got a 40 pounds chateaubriand for a fiver, also long life items like chocolates and the like are reduced in their month of expiration and it gets lower and lower as the reach their sell by date

  • @AlexH96
    @AlexH96 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reason for the security sticker is because M&S experienced a large amount of steak theft a couple of years back. When I worked in my local store over £500 worth was stolen during open hours and they had to reorganise the whole shop so that the steak could be seen from a till at all points of the day.

    If you visit certain super markets are specific times of the day you can see them applying the yellow stickers can get some excellent stuff for very little. I have a relative that goes there and buys these huge steaks and other various other large quantities of meat for very little.

    I used to work at M&S, so this should be an interesting one. Worth noting that the reduced stuff is based on the Sell By and not the Use By date, so things like sandwiches they will be the same day (there's usually sarnies reduced) but on some other things, it will have a gap between those dates. If you want a nice cheap "continental" breakfast, go to a shop with an In Store Bakery, about a hour or so before they close and they should reduced the baked stuff and they'll be fine the next morning. They also reduce things more than once, so depends when you go, will be how much it's reduced by. So it might only go down £1 the first time to get them sold, then towards the end of the night to clear the last bits they'll often reduce a second time

    @Cheemma 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used to work at M&S and a lot of people came in everyday just to buy the reduced stuff near closing time. A lot of stuff would be reduced twice, and what didn't sell could be bought by the staff. I got some pretty good stuff that way

    I have to admit that when I go M&S I usually tend to go for the deals or yellow sticker items. If you were to go to M&S and buy lets say a prawn sandwich (they label it as their "best ever") it will cost you £4.00 (from a London store). For me who earns a decent salary, it is still a crazy price to pay for a sandwich. Overall what makes this a total no go is the fact that all other shops have meal deals usually at £3.00 that give you a snack and drink and the sandwiches are pretty good too.

    Sell by, best before, and use before are all very different and very important to pay attention to.

    • @FateBoost
      @FateBoost 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SECONDQUEST Sell By is the date to get it off the shelf.
      Use By is the day it expires, and it’s only safe for about 3 days after.
      Best Before is the day or sometimes month it expires, and it’s usually safe for at least a month after.

    The price of the reductions depends on what time of the day you go, usually at my local store, around 4pm seems to be the sweet spot for low prices and before everyone else raids the reduced sections

  • @charlottestevens9352

    It worth asking staff what time they reduce most items and go looking then also ask if they have a section for just reduced items

    M&S is ridiculously expensive, no idea how they're still in business. You can buy a prepackaged sandwich there for €5.40 (or some weird price like that) here in Ireland or you can buy a near identical one from Dealz (PoundLand in England) for €1.50!!

    I do reductions in sainsburys a lot and almost everything that gets chucked out for being out of date is absolutely fine and would last another 2-3 days to be honest. So much food that is perfectly fine gets wasted.

    Marks and Spenser food isn't that expensive or posh in some cases its the same price as the supermarkets. The quality of food in Marks and Spenser is higher than the average supermarket so its like buying Tesco finest or Salisbury's taste the difference. This week on isn't that difficult this time. Should be easy as your local Mark's are in the same areas as mine as you live near me, if you want yellow marked food, just go 1hr before closing time, they mark them all down then. They do a meal for two for £10, Indian and Chinese meal deals (2 main and 2 sides) for £10 and 3 for £10 items.

    You can get fillet steak for 4 pounds in lidl, they're really good. Cooked medium rare, it's fantastic, genuinely melts in your mouth.
    The fact that that fillet steak broke in half is a bit weird, it should just be one circle

    English supermarkets always have better reductions than the ones in Ireland, I have found. Also, going in at the very end of the day you get the best deals. Handy if you live near a shop. I'm surprised to see M&S don't have a reductions area for all of the reduced food to go to. But they do cater to wealthy people and probably don't want to make it easy to get a bargain.

    When I visit Marks and Spencers, I can get a packet of 10 or 12 British Pork Chipolata Sausages (78% Pork) for £2 a packet.
    A 150g West Country Luxury Yoghurt costs £0.75 - I buy four of them, which means I pay £3.00 for all four tubs.
    Kind regards, Peter Skuce, St Albans, Hertfordshire.
