      You'd be surprised. I guarantee someone gets paid a hefty (At least 50k USD) a year to do the covers, plus you have to check the legal requirements for the packaging, etc... But the number of people actually "designing" is minimal compared to other brands, with dozens of "teams" and panels and market researchers and focus groups involved.

      Also because asda have to pay a fee to sell other brands so have to make them more expensive in order to get their money back. With Asda own there is no fee so can sell it for what it’s worth 🙂

      It's kind of like the no name brand we have here in Ontario. The package is very plain, but the truth is that most of those items are actually coming from factories that also produce brand name items.

      William Connolly yeah I understand what you mean. I still think it would be a good video idea to see if it is of better quality than the other supermarkets but I just don’t see why Waitrose needs to have a basic range because the whole point of a basics range is to have the simplest products for a low price. if someone wanted to save money they could just get branded products for around the same price which is kind of ridiculous really.

    For the cereal, realistically if you only have 1 liter of milk you'll only have enough milk for about 8 bowls of cereal. So we have 1.09/8 = 14p per bowl of cereal. Still really cheap as far as breakfast goes.

    The reason why they use plain packaging is that people will look at the other more expensive and attractive packages and will pick them over the plain packaging and they also might put them on bottom or high shelves so that it is not as easy to see

    The simple, boring packaging design is to save costs on printing ink. Every cent counts, I suppose.

    • @MrAranton
      @MrAranton 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's not about the ink, it's about the printing process. On an industrial scale, each colour used in a print is put onto the paper seperately. The more colours are used, the more often the paper/carton needs to pass through the printer, which - depending on machines used - increases the risk of misalignments that ruin the result. And the more complex the image is the worse a misalignment can screw it up. Say there's a picture of a person on the package; being even a fraction of a millimeter off between the printing stages will lead to a blurry image with distorted colours. In a design that's mostly white with a bit of text and maybe some coloured stripes, that problem doesn't occur, even if there's a misalignment of several millimeters. That drives cost down much further than using less ink.

    • @himynameishelen
      @himynameishelen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      MrAranton- since the boxes all have photographs of the items on, rather than a simple blue stripe like Tesco value used to have, I think Onyx Viper is probably closer to the truth than you.

      Asda have been trying to save money on carrier bags too, as I've noticed over the years they made them thinner and thinner until they could barely survive one use, then once they became as bad as possible made them a little bit better.

    • @handsoffmycactus2958
      @handsoffmycactus2958 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrAranton not true. Tesco have ditched their Value brand in favour of farm style ‘home style’ brands. They are full of colour and even prior to this, the Tesco Everyday Value range improved the packaging and ditched the bland look so more people wouldn’t feel embarrassed to buy it

    As a person with little income at the moment I want you to know that I am not offended by you going on a week of discount priced food. In fact, I think that the majority of people who get offended are not poor and just think that they need to feel sorry for us peasants because that's how people act in the current year. Like everything hurts their feelings all the time and it constantly needs to be called out. As in "how dare you eat their food and say it tastes bad. Don't you know they can't afford better?"
    It's all very smug and self righteous. It annoys me because I don't need people with better financials to feel sorry for me. That just makes me feel bad. I know some of the discount food is nasty. However, some of it is actually really good. I've been struggling all my life. Once me and my brother had to share a can of sloppy joe sauce. Yes. Just the sauce.
    I do eat some of the Walmart brand snacks along with the bulk vegetables, rice and meat that I get at the cheapest prices I can find. The potato chips and the breakfast biscuits (their version of Belvita) are really good. In fact, I prefer the Walmart brand chips over the name brands. The breakfast biscuits are really really nice. You wouldn't even know they were store brand.
    Sorry if I went off on a tangent. Most people of limited income are pretty strong and resilient because they have to be. We're not that easily offended.

      Not to mention that him eating these things and saying "this is actually really nice and the price is very reasonable" will encourage more people to buy the products (eg: I bought value corn flakes after he said how good they were) which in turn may destigmatise the idea of eating value brands and also encourage the stores to generate an even greater variety of products in the range.

      got no name Why don't you educate yourself so you can realise that having more education doesn't make you eligible for jobs which straight up aren't there. Also that if you want to be able to eat in restaurants etc, someone has to work in them and so maybe they ought to be paid a decent wage- unless you think we should sit down as a society and just agree that we want these services but that those people who provide them should live in poverty.

    The merger with Sainsbury’s will give Walmart overall control of the company and will also incorporate Argos which has been added to the Sainsbury’s brand. Walmart will likely close down Asda and use the Sainsbury’s brand instead, as it offer a better market brand.
    Under the merger, Walmart will end up with 41% of the company but also 21% is owned by Qatar holdings and 5% by Blackrock. This leaves 33% to the current Sainsbury’s board, making Walmart the major shareholder.

      Wait, what? Is that like a British thing? Onions are 100% vegetables. They're a bulb vegetable like garlic, leeks, and water chestnuts. They put the stuff on salads, in vegetable broth, all sorts of stuff; it's one of the most used vegetables of all time. It's also nutrient dense, and healthy for you. I'm not sure how it gets discounted as a vegetable.
