Flux core welding is often cheaper than hard wire welding, but the hard wire welding will always give you better looking welds! I work at a big Cran company, we only use duel Shield. At first I didn’t like it, I noticed duel shield like extremely clean surfaces. It doesn’t like thin metal ether. I’m no professional welder, we do have a welding team who are certified and they refuse to use anything other than duel shield. I have really been putting effort into my welding!! Thanks for the video !
I enjoy hard wire weld with Stargon gas inside the shop, But flux or stick is the only way to go in windy outside welding
I only have welded with flux core. I'm a beginner but weld often and seems to be fine for everything I have needed so far. I can only weld outside anyways, so flux core works great for me!
I'm using a 175le on 3/16 frame rails. I Run .35 flux on the hottest setting and welds good.
Sucks on hardwire, never welds good on c25 under 30
Dual shield or hardwire.. if In a flux core needed situation, I’d just stick weld it personally
I took welding all 4 years of high school and got more detailed information about MIG in 40 minutes of watching this 😳. Personally I think it is because Steve is an awesome instructor with a real talent for being understood by all. Love the videos please keep up the awesome job

Don’t feel bad, I just got a flux welder & rod welder. I’m 76 yrs young, my dad had a body & fender shop when I was little and never learned acetylene torches. Now I can learn and it’s just for personal use & enjoyment.

This is going to sound crazy! I have never went to welding school. I work at a farm equipment manufacturer and started out working on engines as welders worked on hoppers and frames 60 percent stainless steel and 40 percent mild steel.on occasioni would watch the welders and at times I would practice probably like anybody would given the opportunity. Within the first year of me working there I acquired my own welding machine and within three years I was head of my department in assembly both welding and mechanics. 21 years later I still have never touched a stick welder and don't know how it works. I recently bought a 220 mig for my home and flux core came with it and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't fit through the tip. Didn't make any sense. I have learned more in 10 minutes of watching your video then I have in 24 years at my job. I basically know nothing about welding and was just through self learning one specific type of welding well two if you count stainless and mold two separate things both on a mig.

Started with 250 amp Arc Welding when i was young 12 years old and Have Since 28 Flux Core welded and Hard wired Also recently got a Cheap but Decent Mig Welder that Does both 220v 180 Amp Made my Wood Spliter @ 35 with that and then got a 200 Amp Arc Tig China Combo 110 and 220 that works good. Learning Tig now at 42 is different than the Previous Flux and Hard wire, I got it for Custom Exhaust but Like to make all my own stuff from Scraps around the Yard and have done so All my life, my dad taught me most of it including Brazing! I Like to watch your builds and Learn, Start with a Idea and turn it into Operational Machines and Tools i have done the same all my Life!

I prefer to use the term "work clamp" instead of ground clamp, that helps remove confusion when talking about DCEP or DCEN (polarity). Thanks for the content.

Hi Steve, I am a back yard welder as I don't have garage..I use flux core all of my welding on bodywork. I just upgraded to inverter welder and it's made my life a lot easier. Gas mig is better for indoor but new fabricators seem to be going flux core as cheaper and easier. Long time fan.
I bought the miller matic 140 a few years back. It's done all rite for me.
You need to add a video on how to weld magnetized metal by wrapping your stinger around the metal to demagnetize the metal.

Hi Steve I sure miss the TV show...great to see you teaching the craft I took auto body class at Seattle central com. Collage back in 1977 did collision work then in the 90s built some custom cars for a millionaire 5 made the magazines
Street rooder rod action the best one I did won a Barris custom award at Sacramento it started out a 4door Hollywood ghram and I made it into a 2
Door roadster pie cut 4" at front to 0" at back wheels shortened 10" it looked like a Plymouth prowler he wanted to beat Chrysler to the punch... the first car I did another Hollywood ghram Eddie Murphy bought. Lots of welding bondo
primer and paint wet sanding and buffing I was the one guy doing it all but took pride in what I was doing I've got 3 rat rods - projects 34 chevy 4 door -1938 chevy coupe and a1947 ford coe I've also was welders helper on some big pipeline jobs in the early 2,000s but at 63 years old I still get the fizz when I pull out the welder and I'm still painting semi trucks at the big semi salvage yard here in Nebraska...weld on folks thanks Steve for showing the skills.

Definitely hard wire all the way! And I'm glad someone else can MIG aluminum as well as myself. Everyone says it's so difficult, yet I learned at age 13..And I agree on the 110 vs 220 as well Steve. I personally would NEVER buy 110 as I weld commercial equipment and semi trucks and trailers for a living that constantly haul 20+ ton and I sometimes weld for the entire day straight. I've actually gotten 1st and 2nd degree burns from the flash reflecting off the aluminum trailer walls in the summer. So please everyone wear a good quality welding helmet and protective clothing or sleeves at least.
I run a multiprocess machine and use different types of welding for different situations. I like both flux core and hard wire 👍🏽

I’ve had a 110 welder for over 20 years but I retired a few ago and now I want to learn more. It will do gas but I’ve not bought a bottle yet.
By far the best bag for your buck is a vulcan migmax 215 there 700$ ish out the door they do it all
When you tie up the flux core wire when you take it off, don't bend and break it... I did and lost 75% of the roll. Tried to get it back on the roll like fives times only to be defeated...
I have a Lincoln 140 with flex core 0.30 and argon good enough for me doing body panels and small stuff motorcycle and atv don't use it a lot but nice to have when you need it.
When all I had was 110 welder I used a lot of mapp gas to preheat stuff to get better penetration
That's how we used to weld All things cast iron and things like buckets in loaders n crap. I learned that tech probably 30 year's ago now. VERY few do it anymore that I'm aware of anyway
@@dieseldabz7104 i weld buckets at the mine and any thing over 1/2 thick gets 1000° preheat welded then heated 1200° degrees ish on the edge sprayed with water then reheated to 400° and covered with a blanket till its cooled down i found the water harden edge that are stress releaved last the longest for digging rocky soil
Lincoln MP 210 is the bomb I’ve been welding 22 years now and to be honest I didn’t ever want to use it in 110
Steve hit on the subject of using different shielding gas, like 75/25 Argon mix or straight Co2.. Better penetration with Co2 but NOT normally as pretty of a weld although mine look just fine..
Hard wire duty cycles longer but I do use flux core on gates fence etc. Flux core is just one step above a coat hanger but I make it do what it do lol ☺👌🇺🇸

never hasd good results with flux core until the inverter machines appeared. and we have a supposed 240 over here

Great information. We homeschool, and my oldest wants to do a welding course this coming year. I took welding shop in high school, and have done it at different levels at different jobs, though I'm not a certified welder. I plan on drawing from your tips and tricks to help my son get started.

I have a hobart 110v flux core only machine. Fucking love it! I'm a beginner and this weld everything I needed so far! Paid for itself twice over just making camper bars for my truck! I've made many things I stare at and am proud I made it myself!

That first run with the hard wire was a little cold, you where right. Still made a good weld though.
i bought inetub flux core wire e71t-gs if you can test that wire out. nowhere near the slag being thrown around or the fumes produced it actually does incredibly consistent good quality welds. did a lot of research of that wire vs cheap wire and its a night and day difference. looks like you are using a cheap wire truly is a massive difference in quality. wasnt even really producing any slag closer to using gas
i prefer dual sheild flux core on low carbon steels like buckets and equipment steel and is awsome when welding ar steels

Steve I have just recently found you and your videos. It's nice to see someone old school and the different projects we have. This one is particularly a good one for me. I just bought one of those 110v welders. And the 2 different wires that I can use. My question for you is do I need to disconnect my batteries from my truck before welding on it? I'm hoping that you have more of these kind of videos available. Thank you so much for sharing this with me.

Just need two extension cords wired right to two separate outlets to run a 220v welder. So yeah good advice get a 110v/220v then figure out the wiring later.

With mig flux u got to get it hot enough for the slag to float to surface so I don't think push or pull matters but pull does make a nicer weld
TIG is my preferred for detailed and precision welding , but solid wire anything else,, I don't need to be portable 😆

I’ll second that! We rebuild/refurbish shears and pulverizes for a demolishing company.. a lot of 1”-4” thick material. Lots of volts and always dual shield
Wanna run a 12/2 with a 20 Amp breaker for the 110v to avoid tripping breakers

You should invest in some anti spatter spray for the flux core. It makes clean up a lot easier and doesn’t leave as many BB’s on the surface. Great video though, and nice welds.

Welcome to the aluminum family kid👊 Now master MIG welding aluminum as that's how I learned first 29 years ago or so..I was also a "natural" but my father was also a professional welder for yrs before heading into the trucking industry. He built and welded all sorts of race cars and hotrods, roll cages, etc..
I definitely see myself ALWAYS preheating from now on.

I been using my flux wire cause too lazy to get the gas for MIG, dont want to buy a TIG gun for my machine, and for some reason on matter what I do my 7018 sticks just magnetically sticks to the metal 75% of the time. Can't get a bead going. Flux core I've been able to immediately run a bead and it's fairly decent. It's a cheap $400 Amazon China machine but it does MIG, TIG, SMAW, Flux. It works better than I was expecting. It does 110 and 220 but I ain't hooked up 220 plug up yet.

@@WelderUpVegas I think so too. I'm guessing that's why my sticks are sticking hardcore to metal. Just not enough amperage. Just gotta put in a new breaker box and fuses and what not and run the wire. Hard to come home from construction and muster up motivation for more construction haha Thanks man

@@WelderUpVegas Its easy to notice a Esab 😎 I live in northern Sweden. Have you ever tried Kemppi?? Its welding machines made in Finland. They are badass!! My father used Kemppi when he owned a company with trucks, excavators and loaders.
Flux core goes way better with gas. Never seen no nozzle before. I found that flux core produces a hard weld which is prone to cracking. Solid wire seams more sort of flexible.

On my welder, I don't have to think of anything like that. like that it can trip the braker. It runs on 400 volts. I tried flux core a few times before. I didn't really like the result.(it was dirty) and when I had "weld" a whole day in the shop. Then it was soo very smoky in there. so no I don't like flux core.

Only diff I find between mig fluxcore and tig is one is a bit prettier to look at than the other but the strength is there if you know what your at.tigs good for exhaust and intercooler that type of stuff fluxcore is good for a little thicker more forgiving and less seen applications ,lol😉.

I only gave 110 in my garage. I need to shorten an axle.. would love to see how you preheat thick metal, and which is better for thick metal flux or gas both are 110?
Gas shielded flux core would work great when working with thick metal
Sir, I need your advice. I’m in the market for a smaller packable welder for my farm. New to welding. I have fencing as well as farm equipment. What type of welder/type do you recommend and why. I’m leaning towards either Miller or Hobart. Thank you and appreciate the continued knowledge. I’d be able to hook up to 110 & 220 via generator and socket no problem.

How do you like those esab welders ?
I love using 71t1 wires (dual shield flux core) and self shielded wires at work nr 233 232 there sismic wires for structural don't use short circuit to much now spray hardwire yes don't ever use that nr t11 the small machine self shielded wires on anything serious and thick it's extremely brittle and has no ductility
