There cannot be many bands - EVER, who can reproduce such a brilliant mirror image of vocals and music 40 years after the original - I still have the vinyl copy of the Album. Long may they continue.
Most artists are horrible live (At least compared to their studio versions.) It's like they sing it really well once, by luck, and then say "That's it, put it on a CD" and from then on every time they do it it's horrible. Kansas did it the right way, it was equally well performed each time.
+anthemofadam It was a good performance, but I noticed so many differences from the album version. Either the guitarist was trying something new, or he was nervous/got off his groove. Either way, the album version sounds better to me.
+Joe Aga My husband and my son are both musicians and often change live playing to move with the audience or a mood. it is really difficult to play the same thing over and over and over...
How can people dislike this song its a classic. We all grew up with this song. Your parents grew up with this song cruising the highways of America in their muscle cars. This song is as Americana as it comes!
I discovered Kansas in the mid-70s and saw them a dozen times over the years. They are one of the tightest, most passionate live bands you will ever see. Indoors, outdoors, small halls, stadiums, or with and orchestra, they bring it every time. Their music is so much more than their two hits. Go see them. They will still blow you away.
This song is really hard to play with all the changes but Wow Great Feeling when you finally pull it off in a bar! We did back in 77-78 & Man those days were Great just like this song!!!
Please Help Me! I'm addicted to this song!!!!!!!!!!!! I hear it in my head over an over! It won't stop! Sure, it's a great song, but ... please ... please let it STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shit the bag and save the matches, I jammed the ear buds at MAX volume. I remembered a concert I never went to...twice. In November of 79 and in 80..Both my daughters born were a year apart the night of both concerts, I still have the 4 tickets
I would just like to say that, yes, we do know that music like this existed before a TV show or movie, but for lots of Supernatural fans, the show has just gotten us interested in this genre of music. Most of us actually do like the song for the song itself, not because of what it relates to. So, please don't make us feel inferior simply because we didn't come across this sort of music the same way you did, because we like it just as much and are perfectly entitled to express that. Thanks.
My six year old granddaughter heard this song on the radio and said "hey, this is Dean's Song from Supernatural". her daddy said, "your damma would be so proud!".
OMG, the bass is so bottom heavy and really carries this tune quite well. Pure thunder. Kansas are bloody LEGENDS, even in England. We have really taken a shining to classic rock from the States. Boston is another great band as well. = ]
I don't know... if they keep putting out no-talent songs like this one, they'll never make it. *SNARK* Are you shitting me?! These guys just celebrated their 40th anniversary. One of the best prog groups or otherwise to come out of the 70's!
I would kindly say to any person who does not listen to rock music ,to stop commenting on the perfection of this song.....We knew that,it existed almost 35 years before SUPERNATURAL....I'm always begging my friends to listen to some classic rock songs and they just ignore and laugh at me...and when such a song is related to a series or a movie they like, then they manipulate this so that to show that they have an overall view about music in general..Now go and just listen to Justin Bieber..THANX
brofranomo Dude, take Lawrence Taylor's advice and stop smokin' crack. This song is now almost 40 years old, and people of different generations still sing it when it comes on the radio. Kansas was NOT short lived, their songs are still getting regular airplay, and they still sell out concerts. Does it hurt to be that stupid and jealous?
Carry on my wayward son There'll be peace when you are done Lay your weary head to rest Don't you cry no more Once I rose above the noise and confusion Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion I was soaring ever higher But I flew too high Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man Though my mind could think I still was a mad man I hear the voices when I'm dreaming I can hear them say {Refrain Masquerading as a man with a reason My charade is the event of the season And if I claim to be a wise man, well It surely means that I don't know On a stormy sea of moving emotion Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean I set a course for winds of fortune But I hear the voices say {Refrain No! Carry on, you will always remember Carry on, nothing equals the splendor Now your life's no longer empty But surely heaven waits for you Carry on my wayward son There'll be peace when you are done Lay your weary head to rest Don't you cry (don't you cry no more)
my boy 12yr.s came back from church camp singing this song, and when I joined in he was floored
Steve and Robby still had it and sounded better then ever
so much respect for this song. MASTERPIECE.
There cannot be many bands - EVER, who can reproduce such a brilliant mirror image of vocals and music 40 years after the original - I still have the vinyl copy of the Album. Long may they continue.
Sounds true to the recording, just as powerful and epic. I love when a band can produce the same sound live as their studio stuff.
Most artists are horrible live (At least compared to their studio versions.) It's like they sing it really well once, by luck, and then say "That's it, put it on a CD" and from then on every time they do it it's horrible. Kansas did it the right way, it was equally well performed each time.
Alex Burgoyne you have absolutely no idea what the work in the studio looks like nowadays, do you?
The music is simular yes, although the guitar in the beginning is different than the studio version.
+anthemofadam It was a good performance, but I noticed so many differences from the album version. Either the guitarist was trying something new, or he was nervous/got off his groove. Either way, the album version sounds better to me.

It's my ringtone...love this tune. .thank God Supernatural is bringing back some really epic classic tunes..@live and love supernatural
How can people dislike this song its a classic. We all grew up with this song. Your parents grew up with this song cruising the highways of America in their muscle cars. This song is as Americana as it comes!

Apparently, you do not grasp the meaning of the song so I am guessing you are quite young or just lame! :)

I saw them live last October and they still sound great! They are the epitome of progressive rock.
Me and my friend just seen Kansas here in Milwaukee, WI on 10/25/12 and they gave one heck of a performance from start to finish.
Music was great in the 80's, but nothing beats the 70's
Here is a real comment....excellent song from one the best bands during the 70's!
Listen up kiddies, they don't make music like this anymore!

My six year old granddaughter heard this song on the radio and said "hey, this is Dean's Song from Supernatural". her daddy said, "your damma would be so proud!".

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say
{Refrain
Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune
But I hear the voices say
{Refrain
No!
Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
But surely heaven waits for you
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry (don't you cry no more)
probably because... it's old and we of the 21st century don't hear this on the radio much any more (pity though, I like this song).
Supernatural brought me her, I love this song.

All I can say Excellent song , Excellent band
O do it again just wonderful
God they sound amazing! They still sound amazing!
Great song, and performance. :)
Say what you want about Kansas, Billy Greer was the voice behind Kansas wall of vocals. As his voice is clearly heard on every background vocal song
