I have my driving license for 3,5 year now and because of this and some other videos I think I might just understood that speed isn't everything. In fact it can be minor factor now. Feel, look, sound, even smell. Everything is more important than speed for me now when it comes to enjoying the drive. I think I understood it quite fast (I'm 21 now) and I'm very happy of that. I can enjoy the drive without the risk of receiving the ticket.
I loved mine! I suppose it was nothing special by the numbers (especially as mine was just a humble 1.7...c. 80bhp, not a lot even for sub-2000lbs), but it was as capable at putting a big, dopey grin on my face as anything I've ever driven. Fantastic feedback from the tires...like having nerve endings in the contact patch.
I've had 2 914s, my current one is a 2.0 L 73. Love it. I replaced the fuel injection with carbs and it doesn't have any computers talking to each other in the engine or anywhere else. It is a minimalist's dream. The cranks on the windows have never failed me(unlike my past 350z electric windows). I can trouble shoot some things myself. I am 60y.o. and am amazed at how many younger guys who don't know the car come up to me in stores and ask about it.
In the late 70's a work colleague turned up in a just purchased 914. I was smitten. 45yrs and 2x 911's, a 944 S2, a 928 S4 & 2x Cayennes later, i'm still smitten with the 914 and would love to find one. Hard to find here in NZ, but I'm going to try. Beautiful example here, green with envy. Saved to library so I can see & hear it when the urge beckons.
I just saw your car parked on the street in an “after” video of the California fires at it survived. I knew it was this car the second I saw it. Hope you’re safe.
I had one in the early 90's. Installed a 911 dash, gauges, 928 turbo wheels, kyb's, fat swaybar, updated the fuel injection to twin webbers, 4 point harness. Most fun I had ever had in a car, vastly underrated vehicle in my opinion. Could turn on a dime, sounded great, sitting on the ground. Only downside was the rear flex of the car in turns, when pushed the suspension structure would flex unpredictably and could send the rear heavy car into a spin or off into the woods if you weren't careful. Easy fix nowadays with boxed slip ons that eliminate the flex. Wouldn't be surprised to see them become the next big thing in classics as well as the Mercury Cougar.
I’ve owned many Porsches over the years and the best of the best are the old 4 bangers - the 356, the 914, the 912, 924 and 944 because you can put your foot into it, take a fast corner, feel on the edge, all while staying within the speed limit! I don’t want to be a criminal to enjoy driving a car on the edge; good luck doing that in a GT3.
I owned a 914 when I was thirty-eight ( I'm 71 now) it was my favorite car and the best-looking car I ever owned I wish I never sold it. I was in the Navy and we replaced the transmission with only three bolts a pilot driver and wrench was all we needed... beautiful simplicity
I used to have a 76' 914/4 2.0 that I found listed for sale in my local paper in the 90's. It was painted Toyota gold and was originally orange. It had a rust hole in the floor and developed the common problem of the rusty battery tray. Sadly it went up in flames before I had a chance to restore it. It was by far and away the best car I've ever owned. I have lots of fond memories driving it. This is the first 914 I've seen that has the flairs in the back but not in the front. It doesn't look quite right, the fenders should be flaired in the front as well. I love the color. Thanks.
I’ve had three 914s, 968, 944S, 928S, Boxster S, and driven countless 911s. The 914 is by far the most fun to drive Porsche I have driven. Not the most comfortable nor practical but the fun factor is off the chart. Cheap (at least used to be), reliable, easy maintenance, tons of luggage space, good fuel economy, these cars are amazing.
My first car was a 1975 914 1.8 liter Totally rotted out. Belonged to a Texas surfer. It sat in a garage for 10 years before I decided to sell her. Sold it to a dude in Alpine Texas for $500. He fixed it up and raced it for a long time. Then sold it to someone in Alpine Texas, where it continues to roll. I am happy I decided to save that old rust bucket. More than likely it would have be thrown into a car shredder. I Love the sound of your 914! I currently drive almost daily a 924 Turbo S2. It's my rolling restoration project. It's not perfect but it's nice and it runs well. Hope to find myself anothe 914 to have someday? Godspeed to you Sir!
👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! And not only because I absolutely love nearly anything that is green. Thanks a lot for making explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to all involved people.
Remember driving a friend's 914 in college. The responsiveness the car had turning into a corner was amazing. There are also players in the market now who can get interesting levels of power out of the 4-cylinder engines in these cars. Combined with a weight around 2000 pounds, I could see a 914 being really quick.
I have had a lot of mid-engined cars, 512, 246, Europa, Esprit, Bora to name a few. It was definitely no the fastest, or the quickest, but the 914 (I had both a 73 2.0 and a 914-6) was hands down may favorite to drive. It has exceptional visibility, very open and comfortable interior and handles the most neutral (with the right tires and suspension and it setup properly) handling car I ever have driven. Oh, and the roof comes off, and handily stores in the trunk. I recently bought a Corvette C8...specifically because it was mid-engined, and the roof comes off. I looked at used 914s, and for what the cars were, they were all overpriced for anything decent enough to drive. And, at my age, I figured instead of working on the car, I'd rather drive it. Well, the C8 is a real grand slam for GM, though more modern, faster, quicker and far better handling...I still prefer the neutral handling, exceptional visibility and open interior of the 914.
That’s a cool one! All you need is the clear and amber euro spec front turn signals, chrome bumpers, h.I.d. headlights, & fog lamps, and the front spoiler with the bendable rubber bottom part! These were the mods I had anyways, on my 71’.
In 72 I owned a 70 - 914-6.. Loved it!! Wish I could get another now!! Fast and Fun.. They had 911 T engines with Dual 3 barrel WEBER Carbs. 911 Brakes and Steering and 911 oil dry sump tank in the engine compartment behind the driver... Imagine driving a large go kart on the street!! I had mine up to 130 mph on the 405 freeway in SoCal at least 3 times at 2am!!! Mine was Adriatic Blue. Of course I had polished PORSCH 911 Mags too..!
What a story, I love people like this. You want to own a car like that to enjoy it, drive it, and make so many memories with the car. The 914 always to me was that “push to the end” car. Throughout its life it will always put a smile on your face until the end.
It's almost as if Porsches are desirable automobiles and regular maintenance to keep them roadworthy is incentivised in order to justifiably command the fairly silly numbers they are valued at. Radical stuff, I know.
I love Porsches and I have 3 of them 70 914 and 80 83 911s. I think however that the newer ones will drag down that statistic over time. The newer ones are too complex for the average weekend mechanic or kid to work on. Nothing beats the air cooled simplicity of an old Porsche.
@@wadesbrain People have been saying that since the advent of fuel injection. Now it's easier to work on a 90s or early 2000s car than find someone who can synch carbs, timing, and do air-cooled engine valve adjustments. I think otherwise regarding new Porsches. I can't wait in 20 years for all of the modern 992 & 718s to reach the depths of depreciation to be able to modify their turbos and make silly power. By then they'll likely be slow compared to the electric cars we may have but that's progress for you. For example modern 911s's are more powerful, faster, and more comfortable than a 996 Turbo
83% of all statistics are made up on the spot. ;) Seriously I don't know about 70% still being on the road, but I would believe that 70% have been or are being restored, saved or stored for future restoration to get them back on the road. Very friendly community of enthusiasts who are willing to help others who share their passion.
Awesome! My first car as well, except paid 5k in 1985😉. Tyler gets pulled over by cop and cop says, “do you know why I pulled you over?”. Tylers response,”because my tail light is out?” Cops shakes head and says, “ no, because I wanted to see your car up close!👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow, stumbled across this flick by YT suggestion... And the 914 was my very first car, too. Bought it with 17 for 800,- Deutschmark here in Berlin,... Thanks for the memories!
Had a 73 2.0 sport/comfort package grey market..Phoenix Red( signal orange) black top, chrome pack...brown leatherette with brown corderoy insets in the buckets..I got it 10 years old, but what a joy..mine had two black rubber teats protruding from the chrome bumper...plain alloys that I loved..driving through So-Cals high desert at night..top off, you had to wear layers of sweaters and a beanie with a muffler over your mouth as the air was more than bracing..
I've had my 75 914 2.0 over 25 years, same color green on tan. Wont ever sell it. Hagerty is a great company to deal with. I have 7 or so vehicles insured by them. (BTW, I discovered Hagerty when Grundy, the other classic car insurer, wouldn't insure the 914 ! I immediately switched and have been happy ever since.) Keep up the great work !
We had one. Hubby sold it decades ago. I miss that car. It was SOOOO much fun to drive. Had a blast beating all those noisy, loud muscle cars. Those were good days.

Just be careful in the turns, once you loose it, the ass end spins around pretty quick. Most of the time it’ll four wheel slide pretty confidently though. Happy 914ing! I’m jealous, should have never sold mine.
I'm old, but this was the first car I ever bought. Got to drive it from Marin to Palos Verdes and everywhere in between. It was affordable, got 45 mpg. Met cool people, almost got a job at "Skunkworks" Mazda in Irvine. All because of this car. Chased another, but never finished. Can't believe what's happened to this country.
Love the vid! Still, I remember a few of these in high school, late 70s, and we thought of them as nothing more than another Volkswagen. Hey, we were all about Camaros, Corvettes, Chevelles and Big four wheel drive trucks - it was mid-west US. Thanks for keeping yours going and the story. :)
I finally get it. I remember when these cars were unloved, and I looked down on them for years myself. But now? No BS, I think a mildly modded 2-liter 914 might just be the Porsche I’d most enjoy owning and driving.
the 914 is Such a fun car to drive. The first one I drove was a 916 that my boss owned in Mountain View CA. He sold it that day when he brought it to the underground garage at the company. Then I have a friend that owned a 914 in Watsonville. It was a blast to drive in the Santa Cruz mountains. Great memories...!!! Go check out Bruce Canepa's 917s and other rare Porsches....
I love how an insurance company actually cares about these things. Progressive would either deny this car flat-out or charge MASSIVE rates for it. However, you encourage the people who want to drive, the people who care, and the people who love cars.
Ugg, well I was very young when I bought my first Green just like this one 1974 - 914 2.0 Liter. I had dual exhaust added. It was loud and a bit obnoxious, but I loved to drive it! I was so fun and low to the ground. I'm not a mechanic so I always took mine to a German Motors shop here in Norcal. I highly regret selling it, I could have kept it and only drove it on weekends. But got Married and bought Honda Prelude red. That was a long time ago, I think I sold mine around 1989....ugg!!😢😢
I love anything with the Type4 engine! What caught my attention was the quality of youe filming techniques with vid. Do you have a behind the scenes vid of how this vid was made?
back in the early 70's we passed a 2-vehicle traffic accident that involved a 914 and Ford pickup. There was not much left of the 914 or its passengers
When I was a kid in the 90’s my grandfather had a 914 at his house that was just rotting into the ground.... I always thought it should be saved and put back on the road. Sadly it was probably beyond restoring 20 years ago. There’s a Wal-Mart or something like that where that house was now. 😞
My first car as well. 1990 I bought a 1972 914. I love that car. I think they’re beautiful. Great handling. Great to work on... One of my most regrettable sells. Great video!
Neighbor had one. He would take it on the back roads. I could hear that little engine screaming. Street legal go kart. No Bluetooth, no satnav, no stereo, no electronic nannies, and no electric power steering.

I LOVE 914's TOO
Awesome piece, I love these cars
The video production in this three minute clip is so good the car was secondary. Thumbs up to the person that created it.
I routinely drive my 73 914 early Sunday morning on a back road. It’s like a therapy to escape to discover myself.
I have driven a few different Porsche and I owned a 914 2.0 - it’s still the most fun I’ve had driving . I wish I didn’t sell it.
Same here
I've seen a couple of these around where I live, super low and squatty, I love it, and this episode was a great tribute
the older I get, the more I like this model among other Porsche models

914: The best-handling car I've ever driven.
I feel this video. Yeah, I couldn’t afford a 911 back then but I did buy a 924. I really enjoyed that car.
I loved mine! back in the early 70's we passed a 2-vehicle traffic accident that involved a 914 and Ford pickup. There was not much left of the 914 or its passengers
I've had mine for over 40 years. She's my little mistress. Love taking her for a ride!
Seen a 914 for the first time today in person. Now I really want one
Always wanted a 914....🤙😎🤘
My 1970 1.7 was a go-cart for the street. They are so light, quick steering and low....A fiat x1/9 was similar.
This was very well done. Congratulations
The 914 is a simple classic car. Beautiful in its own understated way.
I'd love to know where this was filmed. I really makes me want to take my 914 there.
A beautiful cinematic tribute to a lesser known car.
In order: Piuma, stunt road, Kanan, and encinal canyon. The opening shot is at reel inn along pch near malibu.
One of the most underrated canyon carvers being used as it was intended, heel-toe, tail out, connected to the road. Bringing the ruckus indeed :)
When I was a kid in the 90’s my grandfather had a 914 at his house that was just rotting into the ground.... I always thought it should be saved and put back on the road. Sadly it was probably beyond restoring 20 years ago. There’s a Wal-Mart or something like that where that house was now. 😞
I have had at least one 914 around since 1980, it was my bearer Porsche abd doesn't make a bad winter car
Porsche 914: The Boxster of its time.
Yessss! Love this little car 😊
@ same here
My first car as well. 1990 I bought a 1972 914. I love that car. I think they’re beautiful. Great handling. Great to work on... One of my most regrettable sells.
Great video!
Very...very nice! I sold mine 71 about 10 years ago, it was my first aircooled car....regret selling but will find another....
I had a 1976 914 back in the '90s and I put a chevy 350 in it. I have 2 pieces of advice: don't do that. and, if you don't, you're missing out.
ok,I won't.🙄
ok, I will.😂😂😂
I have a ‘72 that I daily drove for a decade- the SBC is the perfect engine in one of these
I passed on this video for several days. Finally watched it, glad I did.
Excellent footage. I love 914's
Great story & great car; thanks for sharing!
I used to have a 914 2.0 and man do I miss that car!
Me too!
I really like the 914. I was a Lotus Europa owner up until 2006 (contemporary of the 914). Mine was also a fun track car.
My friend, I have never missed a car more than I miss my 914.
Same.
I loved my '73 914 2.0! 🤨
😢 this brought me back to my 1974 914, 27 years ago. I sold because I needed the money.
This video is like an Oscar winning short film.
*BEST MOMENT* AT 1:46🤘
Totally killed it.
I love how it sounds
I still love a 914 ! I have had 2 of them and later regret getting rid of them ! Oh well !
Me too I feel stupid
Me 3, should have never sold my 71’. Live and learn I guess.
I get your individuality, at 77 I care less about what people think about me more than ever. Love that Porsche ! RickGTI…..
My absolute favorite Porsche.
What a cool looking car and a great story.
This is the only 914 I like. Well done.
Love my 914....greatest underrated Porsche. I agree....don’t care what you think, a real drivers car.
911 drivers used to flash there headlights at me as they went by. It always made me smile. I agree.
One of the best handling cars I ever owned. Miss it much.
It was the Miata before there was a Miata. Small, light, not over powered, and handled well.
Well said my friend, well said! 😊
This is art bro
Sick car, I like it! I almost sold my mr2 but I'm glad I didn't. This video is what it's all about!
Dad and siblings who like cars?! Where can I sign up
I had a black one when I was 19..loved it..should have never sold it
Neighbor had one. He would take it on the back roads. I could hear that little engine screaming. Street legal go kart. No Bluetooth, no satnav, no stereo, no electronic nannies, and no electric power steering.
Well done Tyler ! / Mats with the Martini 914.
