  • In this video I'm in Granada, in Spain's Andalucia region. I explore this fascinating city and visit the beautiful Alhambra, I also go on a delicious tapas tour and watch the famous flamenco which the city is so famous for. Granada is a city with a rich and complex history which has given rise to a very unique culture and it's a great city to visit! A huge thank you to Gayle for an incredible tapas tour, I highly recommend getting in touch with her if you want to try the best tapas in town:

The production value of this woman’s videos is far and away the best I’ve seen in self produced content. The camera work, onscreen narration, quality of research, etc. etc. competes favorably with many network financed and produces programs. Her enthusiasm and need to feel the soul of everywhere she travels is palpable. This woman has the potential to be the next Tony Bourdain, Rick Steves, or Rick Stein. This is fantastic work.

A very beautiful and integrated show, this film was able to cover most of the aesthetic and social aspects.
But I thought about your words when you said that the Moors were brought back to North Africa after 8 centuries. This is about 27 generations of living in the Iberian Peninsula, I wonder if these people know a homeland other than Spain the homeland that breathed the first breath as well as the 26 grandfathers before them.
I can't imagine the pain and the injustice they felt.

Don't lie, coexistence was never peaceful. Muslims levied a special tax on non-Muslims.
The reality is that they NEVER conquered the peninsula, military control does not imply conquest and this is shown by genetic studies.
It's like saying that Afghanistan is full of North American descendants.
Morocco did not even exist at that time, it was not a nation state, just a group of tribes of different ethnic groups and religious sects.

@@angelosaleh8344 Do not try to confuse us, perhaps you are the one who needs more study.
One thing is lands called al-arāḍī al-ʽušriyya (tithe lands), whose
possession belonged to the community of believers. Which resembles the Roman tax system.
And another thing is the tax to the non-Muslim (arāḍī jarāŷiyya) who paid
      the al-jaraj tax.
You speak of the tax for the passage of commercial goods through
borders of Muslim cities -called ʽušr/ʽušūr and also maks-  This tax bears the same name as the legal land tax ʽušr/aʽšār (ʽAbdu, Niẓām al-ḍarā’ib,
417-453). Its legality was always in question since it was established by the second caliph of Medina, ʽUmar b.
al-Jaṭṭāb (d. 644) for non-Muslims. Its imposition on the Muslim merchant meant that he had to pay the
quarter of ten percent of the non-Muslim.
On the other hand we have in the time of al-Andalus illegal taxes or outside the saria (ghayr šarʽiyya), where the Caliph in turn had his own preferences.

The army that invaded the Iberian Peninsula crossed from north africa. However, they were not really from north Africa. The king who ordered the invasion was al Walid who was born in Medina western Arabia ( present day saudi arabia) but he’s originally ftom Mecca , Arabia .the commander of his army in north Africa was also born & raised in in Arabia ( present day saudi arabia) one third of the Army was made of natives of north africa while two third of the army was made up of natives of Arabia / present day saudi arabia. It is by far not a north african invasion of the Iberian peninsula as you can see. The natives of north africa lived in north africa for centuries & never tried to crossed to southern Europe . In fact, they were mostly under the control of the Romans . The invasion of the iberian peninsula was an a muslim Arab ( Real arabs from Arabia not just arabic speaking people ) invasion . king alwalid who ordered Their capital the invasion of the iberian peninsula was living outside his homeland & birth place , however, him & his family were in power because they were from Mecca, Arabia and they always considered themselves as such .

She's probably Sicilian, and Sicily was under Arab-Muslim rule for four centuries and was under Phoenician domination long before that. Phoenicians trace their ancestry back to Canaanites and the Hymiarites, both of which are Semite tribes of Yemen and the Arabian peninsula. Dear Malini,
Just passing by to say thanks to you for the video and share a kind message that may comes with a surprise. The so-called moorish were not amazed by the culture of the “ yahud “ or the christians at that time. In fact the real story of Granada and the Reconquista is a different story of oppression of the invaders . This is the mainstream general story that even many spaniards don’t want to come to terms with for many reasons. There is many scholars out there debunking this story. Granada was the last place in Spain to be taken control at the end of the Reconquista. At that point there was no attempt to fight and the muslims had to run away finally defeated. Just another tip, many constructions were not erected by the moors but by the christian themselves, “ Visigoths “ in special and obviously the Romans.
    Saludos

alhambra (or al hamra in arabic) was built by the nasrid muslim dynasty in the 13th not the visigoths. even the so called conquistadors were mesmerised by the beauty of Muslim architecture so much so that they were physically unable to destroy the Alhambra palace. the myth of oppression is just that a myth under muslim rule all three faiths for the first time co existed peacefully for nearly a millennia (yes it was not all plain sailing but there was generally peace ). the so called Reconquista was far from so called natives retaking back 'their land' from Muslim nivaders, it was rather an opportunistic land grabbing endeavour by certain Christian alliances fighting weak Muslim taifas. historically when the muslims had conquered spain there was very little architecture left from the roman period with many spanish towns being desolate and run down. it was Muslims who breathed life into the Iberian peninsula bringing with them a sophisticated and superior culture of learning, libraries and gardens - liberating the oppressed people under barbarian Visigoth christian rule (who oppressed the jewish dispora). its no wonder europeans referred to cordoba as ' the ornament of the world'

    • @LMPV4
      @LMPV4 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@haideraliibnakhlaq8823I agree with you. Many Andalusian towns have names that come from Arabic, as they were built during that time. Their layout, their roads, alleys and walls, are still the Muslim ones, and there are many stories about how people hid their religion and pretended to be a Christian after the reconquista. A few generations later, every trace of other religions had disappeared, of course, but people continued to live, work, sing and build their houses the only way they knew. That's why Andalusia looks different from the rest of Spain. Unfortunately, the language was lost, except for those words that had already entered the Spanish language. As for religious tolerance in Al Andalus, even though it is true that you could be a Christian and a Jew under Muslim rule, it is also true that if you wanted to better up in life you had to become a Muslim. Muslims had access to administration and power and did not have to pay taxes. There was both conversion into Islam and conversion into Christianity during those two different periods. Many Spanish surnames have an Arabic origin too. Many people had to leave, but many more stayed, and for many families it was difficult to trace back their origin, so they just adapted to the newcomers, just like in every other period of Spanish history. I believe that the Muslim invasion was a cultural invasion rather than a genetic one, and culture, even after a religious persecution, was something very difficult to erase.

i wouldn't say the Moorish civilization was north african but rather Moroccan 🇲🇦, other north african provinces were under Moors at some times and under other empires at other times, so they don't really have much to do with the Moorish civilization, the "umayyad conquest" has been totally disproven, for example, genetics studies in 🇲🇦 and 🇪🇸 have proven that the middle eastern percentages in these two countries are nearly absent, the Spanish have Moroccan percentages,
everything is always mixed up with arabs for one simple reason, the languages in Moorish Andalusia were Andalusian, Mozarabic, and Amazigh (pure), the thing is that all of these languages were written with Syriac letters, but are not even close to Arabic, only some vocabulary, just like kurdish, old turkish, urdu, ...etc.
modern day Darija 🇲🇦 heavily resembles Andalusian, while modern Spanish 🇪🇸 resembles Mozarabic.
Today the language that most resembles Darija is Maltese 🇲🇹.
the reason why Moors switched from Latin script to Syriac script has to do with the Byzantine Arab leaders such as Amir Musa son of Nusir (confirmed through old coin) that ruled Mauretania Secunda, which was the southern coast of 🇪🇸 and the 🇲🇦 province of Fez,
and the reasons why Moorish art should not be considered islamic art are :
    - Islam actually wasn't a thing in 🇲🇦(and 🇪🇸) until the 11th century, before that, Moors were mostly Arian Christians and Jews.
    - The reason some say it looks like Persian, Turkish.. art is because they're all from medieval times, and influence between cultures is normal.

The original Muslims who invaded Spain did not come from north Africa. They came via north Africa but they were for the most part Syrian Umayyads from Damascus. Later Islamic Spain become the sole survivor and emblem of Umayyad power and culture after the Abbasids of Bagdad took over the eastern Islamic world. It is not prohibited to create images of living creatures in the Islamic world btw. Think of Persian and Mughal art, it just became a tradition in Western Islam but it is not written in stone so to speak.

@@jojolafrite9265 u r confused. The term judeo-christian only arose after World War II and it was used to try to appease the Jews who had been persecuted in the war. The concept of day of Christian really has no validity. Originally it made a Jew that had converted to Christianity. It no longer means that and actually is empty in meaning. Spain was a Christian country and then it became Islamic but they allowed other religions such as the Jews and the Christians to live in peace. Then following Queen Isabella it ceased to be Islamic and was Christian and they did not allow the Jews and the Muslims to live in peace but rather they force them to leave how to convert to Catholicism. I'm a German English Roman Catholic and I know my history. I have lived and worked in Spain and I actually understand the Spanish culture and it is beautiful but I especially like Andalusia which has the flavor of the Moors or Berbers as they were called. They were not Arabs but they had converted to the Islamic religion after the Turks came down and converted them.

Well, in 1482 the last Muslim bastion of Granada fell in the Reconquista; Fortunately, Spain was completely liberated from Muslim conquerors again! This meant that Spain, like almost all European states, was able to develop free of ecclesiastical and religious obstacles (the Catholic Church tried to slow it down for years, but at some point this ghost was over too!) Spain was able to develop with democracy, humanism, enlightenment, education , secularism, freedom of the press and developing equality between men and women; all attributes that are still missing in Islamic states today:!

Granada it's the spanish gem of Spain's Andalucia region, thanks. Would people call Hong-Kong "the british gem of China" or Montevideo "the spanish gem of the Republic of Uruguay"?? Yeah, that's right.

I was getting bored and some time i occasionally open TH-cam to pass the time. I started watching when I came across your vlogs while scrolling. Watching your vlog I was so attracted to you and your tone and your content was full of quality. And after watching your first vlog I watched a lot of your vlogs all night long. I still haven't been released and it's 5:34 in the morning. And I thought I'd give you a comment. I wish you continued success. I am Asad from Pakistan. Good bye

The Moorish are only Moroccans, they do not include Algeria or Tunisia.
