    Probably my favorite video of yours. This says many things...family, teamwork, love, knowledge, etc. That baby backpack has got to be the smartest thing for any parent of a newborn! Love how the entire family got in on the shucking...making sweet memories while making sweet corn, lol. Buggy watching her bobbas...loved that. You know the old saying..."a woman's work is never done", is so true! That bundt pan idea was fantastic! You guys rock!

    I spent 3 days and got my Yukon Gold potatoes harvested....waiting til next week to start pressure canning and dehydrating them. Freezing apples for pie filling today. In 10 days it will be time to harvest the Katahdin potatoes. I will squeeze in time somewhere to finish up the tomatoes. yes, it is a lot of work, esp. for a 72 yr. old, but SOOO nice to have our own food all year long and not have to drive to the grocery and pay the exorbitant prices for food that is not as healthy. You are teaching your young children the RIGHT way to do things. Keep up the great work. God Bless. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUGGIE

    I'm not sure if you've thought about this, it just popped into my brain watching Meg. Your "farm house" down the hill. I know Meg uses it for her soap "stuff". But maybe with a little work, not sure how sturdy the roof is, it can become a giant food processing plant. Lol.
    Meg is working so hard, but it might be a little easier if she had more room. Long counters around the walls, and one big one down the center of the room. Two or three cooktops to have more than one canning pot going at one time. Three dehydrators so less time waiting between batches.
    And the putting up food would be faster. And Then, you could even invite friends to use your processing kitchen for their canning. In my "vision" two or three family's helping with all the kitchen work, so one person isn't slicing 30lbs a tomatoes by themselves, because there's no more counter space or cook pots. Lol, just a vision...kind of like the giant kitchen in the show Downton Abbey. It would be better than Meg would've had it 200yrd ago. An outdoor processing kitchen would barely be four posts and a roof. Maybe a wall on the windward side, lol. Especially in hot and muggy North Carolina at summers end.

    • @SagebrushRambles
      @SagebrushRambles 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She doesn't do her soaps down there as they lost power (the power pole went down) and the power company told them they would have to pay for a new pole etc. So no power to the farm house.

    Don't throw away the corn leaves and the hairs, in Korea we turn those into tea and drink them, it's known to keep your gums healthy, it's really good, you boil them with water, take the leaves and hairs out and keep it in refrigerator and I usually drink it cold but old people drink them room temp or hot.

And dehydrating peppers! Amazing how much you guys do in food preservation! Really cool to watch. Wow, that's a lot of corn! Yay, pigs will love the husks and the cobs. I cut the kernels off and bag them and put that in the freezer. It's so nice to have sweet corn for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter! I've never frozen a whole cob. I blanch it and cut it off the cob just like you did. Cool, purple potato pasta. Beautiful jars of corn. I love that pop sound too. That is one huge pot full of cut tomatoes! Thanks for this guys!

    FYI: lady on 1870 homestead uses a turkey roaster to prepare some of her garden harvest for canning. Sets it on low and cooks vegetables overnight to get a head start for.the next day. Blends zucchini with almost every veggie in her garden. Apparently, zucchini is easy to absorb flavor of other produce and spices. She has afood processor attachment for her Kitchen Aid mixer which she uses to grind up the zuccini.

      @toothaching 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wow! do you have favorite recipes that could be shared?

    • @SaraPfeffer
      @SaraPfeffer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@toothaching the taco soup is (for a small pot) 1 lb ground meat of your choice seasoned for tacos, 1 medium onion, 1/2 cup of black beans and red beans, and 1 cup pinto beans 8 oz of corn and 1 packet of ranch dip seasoning, 1 - 2 quarts of diced tomatoes, one can of rotel if you like the spice. I scale it up by 10 or so and it's super forgiving. The chicken pot pie is chicken roasted, taken off the carcass, and diced 2 cups diced carrots, 2 cups peas, I make broth from the carcass with parsley, rosemary, thyme, etc and use that with a bit of cornstarch slurry to make a gravy. But for canning I omit the cornstarch until I'm ready to make it for dinner. It makes good soup when thin, and thickens easily once heated in a pot. Just follow the meat canning guidelines for the size of jar. Oh and dont use sage as a seasoning it turns the flavors off when canned.

    Meg and Ben, my last year of high school ended in May of 1963, but thereafter, in Arkansas where we lived, the vegetables would soon be coming. The strawberries would come off first -- in late May and June. My grandpa had LOTS of strawberries which we all helped pick and he sold the majority of them. But, there were always more than we could possibly process and freeze, etc. My mom always made lots of jelly and preserves. When the corn, green beans, okra and tomatoes came off, we made (and canned vegetable soup. I'll never forget mixing up the soup starter fixings -- my youngest sister stirred the vegetables together in a #3 Washtub (new and well scalded), and then mom would stay up all night making sure the jars of vegetable soup were processed in the pressure canner. We did something similar about 30 years ago, but I'm past the age now that I am able to do all that stuff. I wish I were able to do that stuff, but I'm not. We're in the midst of trying to get our roof replaced now and it's a real pain in the neck! We always cut our corn off the cobs similar to what you were doing, but we didn't even have a Bundt pan back then! LOL!

    It is extremely refreshing to see your family doing something as simple yet Hardwork no doubt about it, as canning and gardening and preserving eat up for the winters call me together, with such a happy joyful attitude!! No fighting no fussing no grumbling from the kids just an understanding that we’re a team and a job needs done and we’re all going to do it together and we’re all going to benefit from OUR ACCOMPLISHMENT!! I am I say “Mommy,@ “ you are the best multitasker I’ve ever seen for sure❣️
    The amount of tomatoes that you cut up for canning, I think you said 29 pounds who is so refreshing to see, as it’s been years since my mother canned tomatoes!! IA loved watching the juice and the seeds fall over her hands and she put them into the canisters fresh, waiting for them to boil for canning in the jars. You work so fast and without any distractions it appears although, you clearly interact with your children and husband, but I think you are the most accomplishing woman in multitasking I have ever seen❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈
    You were always doing four and five different things at the same time and I honestly don’t know anyone who is not really doing that number of items but the quantity that you were working with.
    I was from a family of 12 children and how much time you could hold a pan of peas to remove the stem and open the pod and push those little peas out into another bowl, you were involved in canning…After that it was tipping beans which seem to long progression before the next phase. Regardless, I don’t ever remember as larger production is what I see you doing, and I’m sure it had to be because of the size of our family plus we help feed my cousins family as my uncle was often ill and unable to work. Mom must’ve been doing it somewhere else with Grandma, especially as we purchased a different farm when I turned 10 and that was the tiniest kitchen and you have three times the size my mother had until our new home was built which wasn’t for another 10 years completed. Anyway I just want to acknowledge your amazing accomplishments and talent and just say that as a woman who grew up doing that and still does some of that, I greatly admire you😊❣️❣️I also admire the camaraderie between your husband and yourself as you work together with your children that is NOT an easy interest to develop in your relationship, & yet, the Both of you seem to command a mutual respect for each other as you worked in the kitchen not only in how are you talk to each other and the children, but working as a team and helping one another to complete task. It’s refreshing to see when so much of the world is focused on everything but what your family is doing. I hope people are watching and taking this all in so that they may establish new ways of doing things in their home even if they should just start with one Blessing at a time, they see from your videos. It is truly a remarkable gift of love and joyful respect for what God has blessed your farm with as well as each other❣️❣️

    I'm in the Philly area, we just had that storm blow through. It picked up some moisture because we got around 11 inches of rain. Reports in the area were between 9 and 13 inches. Major flooding in some areas. I made sure to pick any even slightly pink tomatoes so they wont burst.

    I could never cut corn like that. I hold it in my left hand and cut with a butcher knife, cutting toward my belly, my mom taught me, then after you cut the kernels you scrape each row, that makes your corn creamier. Later my husband bought me a corn cutting board, but I could cut an ear faster with a knife and didn’t get so tired. I love watching you young girls preserve food. I’m a 74 year old widow that doesn’t need to anymore. 🙏❤️❤️❤️🕊😀

    ~ Dang, I love you guys. My mom was raised on a farm, grew up to be a choir director and dress shop manager. Somehow, she still managed to bring a bit of farm life to our home, including canning or even just blanching vegetables for freezing. Your family brings back so many memories and helps me appreciate my mom's efforts much more. Happy Birthday to your little Bug Bite! She's adorable on the floor, playing with her own ear of corn at one point. And Ben, I love it when you show up in the videos with your hair down! Please don't ever cut it short.

    Use an electric knife for cutting the corn off the cob it makes the job way quicker and easier! Don't break all of the stalk off when shucking, that way you can use it as a handle to hold the corn while cutting.

      @@deborahcrutchfield5022 I'm in Western NC...summer gardens are almost gone. I've planted peas, carrots, spinach, two kinds of lettuce, kale and am getting ready to plant broccoli, onions, and garlic. Here, we would not have time for zucchini, squash or green beans to be productive....on to fall garden!

    Happy Birthday Buggy!!!
    Meg, girl you're the canning, and dehydrating queen!!! You just go, go, go!!! I'm going to call you the Energizer Bunny 😉
    Nice looking corn you picked up!
    I picked up sweet corn from our neighbor, and ended up freezing it. We still need a stove I can do canning on. This flat glass top just doesn't work well with the large pressure canner. This year everything was frozen or canned to make thing easier. Next year, will be buying a different stove.
    Received my order of the soap you made, and we all love the bars.
    Ben, like the long hair dude!!!
