  • The Russian oligarchs didn't have much trouble buying up yachts, jets, and mansions - that is, if they didn't end up in prison, exiled, or mysteriously dead. But the war in Ukraine has turned the world against members of this opulent uber-class. Where did all the money come from, and is there still a chance of them holding on to it?

And they can’t spend the majority of their money. VISA has been blocked for all Russians. They have to move their money through sketchey and very expensive routes. From what I hear they are transferring their money into gold in Saudi Arabia, but the transaction costs are very high and you can’t buy that much stuff with gold. It becomes a real hassle and thats the point. In general its really hard to punish people who are extremely rich, but they are doing a pretty good job of it. You need to keep in mind the taste of these individuals. These assholes have really, really bad taste and honestly pretty boring lives. They live for their boats, cars, houses and just spending their money on flashy shit. If they cant spend their money or travel to their houses in London/Paris/NYC, they lose their lives. There isn’t a lot to do in Russia.

Something that I feel was missed - Once privatization vouchers were introduced, most of population was still extremely poor (it's around fall of Soviet Union, economy crisis). Well, imagine you are stuck in apartment that you don't own (you can't own in Soviet Union, government owns everything), you don't have liveably paid job, government just fell apart due to regime and barely can control ongoing chaos. One day out of sudden you get this gold coupon, but you can't do anything about it. You need money. You talk to people and find out that certain individuals form entire criminal families and hunt for these vouchers as the way to gain their influence and, well, become rich. Suddenly owning this voucher becomes a risk for your life as you might be the next in the list of such criminals. They will hunt you and first offer money, then if you don't agree will attempt to blackmail you instead until you pass it over. What's the point in coupon if you're about to die from hunger anyway? So you sell it. That person who got your voucher might be among those oligarchs today. Russia was always dark...

The report is not entirely accurate. The voucher system, to my knowledge, was not used for coal, oil and gas assets.
There was a committee that dealt directly with the future oligarchs to distribute those. And Putin was on that committee. This in the time after he left the KGB and was involved in politics in St Petersburg.
I'm convinced he essentially formed an unholy union between St Petersburg's organised crime groups and former KGB associates. And basically gave them everything, for nothing. I think if it is ever truly investigated it will be found that even the relative small change that was paid for the ex-USSR fossil fuel assets was spun out of nothing. Along the style of maybe a fat contract at the same time the deal is concluded that pays for the entire acquisition and then some (palaces, yachts, etc).
I mean who cares if they are a billion in debt for a week or two until the money from the mine/well starts rolling in but good?

As many have pointed out, the US has its own class of oligarchs. But such is the problem that it is basically legalised corruption. In the US it's public policy that is allowing the centralisation of such extreme wealth in key industries (such as the military as you alluded to) among a small group of people. I mean with such ridiculously lax laws regarding lobbyists for example, it would be strange to expect politicians to go against their own self-interest. If the aim is to stop the centralisation and consolidation of wealth in certain industries, It is SO entrenched in the US that it's difficult to know just where you would even start. Does this make them any worse or any better than Russian oligarchs? I don't know and don't particularly care - I think they're all douchebags. The difference between wealth and greed is a fine line - so while in some parts of the West it is frowned upon to flaunt your wealth, in the US it is the dead opposite, i.e. greed is good.

That's the only hope China and Russia have and their is absolutely no chance of it because when we get pissed and vote the people in power out, the economy rebounds and everything changes, We do it all the time.and the county continue to prosper. That's not the authorities, that's squatters and the squatters movement taking over what's basically a property who someone owns but never lives in. There's entire apartment buildings that are owned but never used or rented or anything like that. It's just a commodity for some rich person because property rarely depreciates in value. So Squatters have been taking over such places. It has nothing to do with this story lol just wanted to point that out cause they'd be furious to have their movement used by the media as if the gov't seized these properties when they didn't.

I am Russian, and I hope these assets will never be returned to the "owners". There is no legal or honest way to have such an amount of money in the country, where “minimum wage” is 19 360 rubles or $313. And many people have their salary even less than that. Teachers and doctors I am talking about, not waiters or gas station workers. It's normal to have a salary of $100-150 if you teach children in some rural areas. All those yachts and palaces and beautiful costal lines, all of it is our roads, hospitals, schools, and houses that were never built. And if you say a word, be grateful if no one care, because if someone will care, you will go to the jail, or can be killed.
