Nippondenzo Has been a huge manufacturing plant in maryville tennessee for decades. I used to work there temporarily. Still makes all kinds of car parts for the rice burners.
I've always liked these cars. I learned how to drive stick on a 1982 Supra (the "A60") and it was a breeze to learn because the clutch was so smooth. The 1979-1981 (not 1978) models were A40/A50 nomenclature. As a 1981, this would have the 5M-E 2.8L straight six and likely the Aisin-Warner W50 five speed manual if it was a stick and the Aisin-Warner A40D/A43D four speed automatic if so equipped. These were assembled at the Tahara plant in Japan, which still operates today. The Toyota parts books cover both the Celica and Supra (in these generations) in the same publication. As the Supra became popular, it became its own model and got its own parts book. Today's modern Dodge/Ram trucks also use an Aisin automatic transmission in some models. Looks like this one is code 888 Light Blue exterior paint.
I learned to drive stick in a 95 Cherokee, and then in my proper first car....a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder. My actual first was a 1984 Jaguar XJS, also with a manual. I could count the list of things that worked on my XJS with 1 hand.
I love that you used to modify your models as a kid. I still have my model '57 Chev Bel-air hardtop with a custom chopped roof (lowered the equivalent of about 4 inches, I'd estimate.) Hey, when you can't afford a car as a kid, it was the next best thing. 👍
I modified a 1:24 Revell '56 Bel Air into an El Camino, by modifying and using the custom pickup conversion panel from the1:25 AMT Nomad kit. It turned out pretty well, considering that I was only about 12 at the time! Now, 50 years later, conversions like that are simple stuff. Experience is a major help in these things.
I love your videos. The knowledge that you have is such a national treasure. I listen to your videos like I'm back in school. I've learned so much from you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
My first car was the 79 Corolla my dad was gonna trade in that he had driven for a few years after buying it from a neighbor. My second car was a copper on copper 82 Supra L with digital dash I bought from the Toyota dealership I was about to start adulthood at. Took me almost 40 years to figure out that my father knew how to adjust valves but deliberately used the wrong line on the crank pulley when I was 13 to see what I'd do. Glad he finally admitted it and I'm glad he's safe in his Lexus. All started with a Toro aluminum deck pushmower too.
Maybe Steve took time off to camp out in the A/C and finish building all those model cars? Its been too damn hot lately to be trudging around and rummaging through a junk yard.
The exact same thing happened with Jeep CJ's in '72. AMC had aquired Jeep and wanted to use their inline 6, so 5 inches was added just in front of the firewall...just like the Supra!
I owned for a spell a 1986 Peugeot 505 Dangel, or a Eurospec 4x4 tuned wagon variant. I'd love to see a bit of info from you on a US spec 505 or even a 405 if you can find one. Finding a French car stateside is nigh impossible.
Another great lesson. I remember these first Supras but for whatever reason never equated them as competition to the 280Z. Anyway, as Detroit performance started to wake up, I didn’t pay Japanese cars much attention. In retrospect, the Celicas of that era were built pretty solid. When you showed the air box, I was mildly surprised that it was made of sheet metal. I guess I’ve been too accustomed to plastic all these years. If Toyota came out with another rear drive (or AWD) four cylinder Celica two door, I’ll bet it would sell - especially if affordable.

Scale replica models of junkers can be a lot of fun since you can go your own way with the details.
